Unlocking the World of Chinese Gambling By Desmond Lam ggbmagazine
It is not hard to figure out why Chinese are known around the world for their high aptitude to gamble. You just need to look back through time and will quickly realize that the Chinese people have a long-documented history of gambling. The first record of gambling can be traced back to the first dynasty some 4,000 years ago. Gambling was recorded in every dynasty since then. In fact, many modern games like lottery, pai gow, tien gow, fan tan and mahjong are thought to have originated in China.
Traditional Games
One thing's for sure: To the Chinese, social gambling is a very common activity. There is no fuss about it. Mahjong playing, for example, is often conducted among Chinese worldwide. It is said to help the elder Chinese people to think better and is a joyful thing to do during Chinese wedding dinners and even funeral wakes. It is a celebrative game for all Chinese people. Gambling is also perfectly all right for anyone, including the young, during festive periods like Chinese New Year. Perhaps these attitudes toward social gambling are a reflection of Chinese values and culture.
Gambling is simply social activity that has been performed by the Chinese people for thousands of years. There is fundamentally nothing wrong with it. Yet, it is considered a taboo when practiced/performed excessively. A Chinese person who falls into a gambling pathology is simply someone who cannot control his own actions and is morally a bad person. There is no sickness; he is just a weak-minded person.
Interestingly, research conducted in several countries found a higher problem gambling rate among local Chinese population compared to other ethnic groups. This may be linked to illusion of control and environmental factors as explained earlier.
Q:
What do you think about Chinese Gambling?
What do you think about lottery?
Do you know about mahjong?
What did you cerebrate the festive periods in Chinese New Year?
Do you think that gambling is a reflection of Chinese values and culture?
What are the Traditional Games?

The god of wealth
As a god that can bring in wealth and riches, the God of Wealth is worshiped by most Chinese. Each time of the Spring Festival, every family will hang a picture of the god for blessings of great luck and large wealth. It was originally a custom practiced by merchants, which then became popular amongst other folks and villagers. Moreover, people of different times and regions worship their own God of Wealth differently, such as the Civil God of Wealth, the Martial God of Wealth, the Deities of Wealth of Five Directions and the Angel of Fortune, as well as the orthodox one Zhao Gongming. The God of Wealth in folk beliefs is not a singular image but something appears as a group.
Borrowing lucky cash
Zi Nan Temple in central Taiwan’s Zhunan Township, Nantou County, attracted nearly one million worshippers over the Lunar New Year holidays, while also becoming the most-searched temple on Yahoo Taiwan.
“The temple grounds have been as crowded as a market,” according to Zhuang Qiu-an, the site’s chief executive manager. “A lot of people lined up overnight for a gold ingot, and even more have come to ask for good fortune with a gold chicken or by borrowing lucky cash from the Earth Lord.”
Q:
Do you believe that there is the god of wealth?
What do you think the idea that borrowing lucky cash from the earth lord?
Do you want to be a super-rich guy?
Do you believe in luck?
How to attract good luck and good fortune?
How to get rid of bad luck?

Joining a Fitness Center
You want to get in better shape, or maybe you just want to stay in shape. Joining a fitness center is a great way to do either one. Still, you may not be sure how to go about finding a fitness center that meets your needs. The main thing to consider when choosing a fitness center is your level of comfort. If you are uncomfortable or self conscious, you are not likely to stay motivated enough to go regularly.
There are several issues to think about when it comes to comfort. Is the fitness center clean and well lit, with state of the art equipment? Is the equipment in good repair, and is there someone available to instruct you in using it? Is there a comfortable place to rest, as well as clean, private restrooms and showers?
Another comfort issue involves other patrons. Some fitness centers are more like singles’ clubs. Are the people there working out and working up a sweat, or are they dressed to the nines, not a hair out place, and spending more time socializing than exercising? If you are serious about working out, you may not find the latter appealing. On the other hand, if the fitness center caters to hardcore body builders, you may feel intimidated, or you may simply prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.
Location is also important when choosing a fitness center. Is the health club in a safe, well lit area that you will be comfortable visiting, even at night? Is parking convenient and nearby, so you won’t have to walk very far alone? Is it close enough to your home or your office that travel won’t become a problem and keep you from attending on a regular basis? These are each important things to keep in mind.
Availability is also a key issue in choosing a fitness center. Find out which fitness center has hours of operation that make it convenient for you to utilize. If you are interested in aerobics or other exercise classes, see which center offers the greatest availability. Find out not only if classes are scheduled at times when you can take advantage of them, but also if the instructors are professionals.
Q:
What do you think about a fitness center?
How to stay in shape?
How often do you exercise?
How often you should workout per week?
What are your opinion about “ Fitness centers are more like singles' clubs”?
What are the benefits of joining a fitness club?
Why is physical activity important?

Crazy in love: What happens in your brain when you really do have chemistry By Victoria Fletcher
LOVE IS THE DRUG
Studies have shown brain chemical dopamine is at higher levels in those in love. Dopamine is key to our experiences of pleasure and pain, linked to desire, addiction, euphoria, and a surge may cause such acute feelings of reward that it makes love hard to give up.
Tests show that taking opioid drugs such as cocaine have a similar effect on dopamine as love.
A side effect of rising dopamine levels is a reduction in another chemical, serotonin, a key hormone in our moods and appetite.
Scream for love: Levels of adrenaline released when frightened means that two people going through a scary experience together can fall madly in love
Serotonin levels may fall in a similar way to those seen in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, explaining why love can make us feel anxious and jittery.
The love chemical we are most familiar with is adrenaline. This hormone is why our heart races, palms sweat and mouth goes dry when we see the person we like.
The same hormone is also released when we are frightened. This means that two people only vaguely attracted to one another can fall madly in love if they go through an exciting or scary experience together. It may also explain the lure of forbidden love.
OUT OF CONTROL LOVE
Psychologists are still trying to understand why some become dangerously obsessed and risk everything for love. Dr David Nias is a psychologist and author on love, and a specialist in stalkers. Although an extreme end of the ‘love spectrum’, stalkers do shed light on why people do inconceivable things when in love.
‘The emotion of love snowballs for stalkers. It becomes a mental disorder and leads them to be delusional. Sadly we don’t know much more about its causes.’
But if someone gets treatment in which they learn to think differently and often more positively, they can recover from their obsession and look back in amazement at how they behaved.
Q:
Why falling in love makes people crazy?
What do you think the idea that love is the drug?
What are the side effects when fall in love?
What are the signs you're falling in love?
How to find your ideal partner?
How does a man/a woman behave when fall in love? What is true love?

Does America need a female president?
Oh hell yes a woman would make a better president.
While some people in America think that the role of woman is to stay at home and care for children, that is incredibly false. Woman are a strong gender, and if a man can be president, than a women would make an even more better president. If a woman were a president, their wouldn't be that many wars and the likely ness of world peace would increase, because let's be honest, the gender of man is very violent and somewhat bloody. But if a woman were a president, it would all change for the better and for the good. But mostly for all. Woman make better presidents, and that's the truth. No questions asked. PERIOD!
Men AND WOMEN are created equal
Women need to be seen as equals to men, and they simply aren't. These days, women are still judged, despite all laws and attempts to create equal rights. Out of the 51 presidents we had so far, they were all men. In the constitution, people wrote that MEN were created equal. What about women? In history, we were treated as the lowest class, just a tad above slaves. This need to change, immediately.
Yes it would be great. Give women the chance to be president.
Women should be given the same opportunity as men. If men are allowed to be president why not a female? It shouldn't be based on gender. Who knows what could happen? A female president could have really good ideas and could also be a huge help to our country.
In my opinion women could be an outstanding president. Women are just as smart as men and deserve a chance.
NO NO and NO!
Women are just too gentle if a war came upon would they be as demanding as a man?Would they have the stomach too fight in the war or would they be hiding?I sure know men would not hide he would fight woman are also just too emotional about every little thingies America really ready for a female president?
That is not their role!!!!
Women should not be a president because thats not their role. Women should be protected not put in the heaps of stress and anxiety of a president. Men go to war, not women because women are delicate and fragile creatures who need to shaded with the protection of a real man. Read the bible too, it supports me.
Q:
Does America need a female president?
Do a female president or a male president would make a better president?
Why a female president would make a better president?
What do you think the opinion like this “women are just too gentle if a war came upon----”?
Are women smarter than men?
We do have a female president, and do you think that she would make a better president?

A dating coach wisegeek
A dating coach helps a person facilitate success in dating. Someone who chooses this profession teaches various techniques to help a client meet and attract a compatible partner. They also identify the person's weaker areas and may offer specific guidance to help improve basic dating skills. Flirting skills, fashion sense and communication skills may all be taught by a dating coach in order to maximize a person's dating potential.
People hire dating coaches for a variety of reasons. Those who are unlucky in love may want to know what's holding them back, and need assistance in overcoming these obstacles. Others may find themselves dating the wrong type of partners consistently and require help in identifying a partner who is truly compatible with them.
Recently divorced people who may or may not have kids may find dating extremely challenging, and need help to get back into the game. Even people successful in dating may want more guidance on how to date online or how to enhance their pick up skills. A dating coach works closely with a person to help them identify exactly that they want and then help them find their lovers or dream date.
Using a variety of techniques such as role-playing experiments, behavior shaping and discussion, dating coaches help individuals to highlight qualities that are attractive to the opposite sex. Helping a person overcome self-limiting beliefs, enhancing appearance through makeovers and improving interpersonal skills are some areas of concentration. They may also give tips on body language, things that may put a date off and help identify red flags that the person should watch out for. A dating coach can take on numerous roles, being a personal cheerleader to motivate or push a person, acting as a mentor and critic giving guidance and also as a confidant that listens and cares.
Q:
What do you think about the dating coaches?
How to have good communication skills when dating?
What are the dating techniques?
How to attractive to the opposite sex?
How to use body language to the opposite sex?
What to do if you dating the wrong type of partners?

Chinese Eat Almost Everything That Moves!
Foreigners are often shocked what Chinese
eat. Many Chinese dishes make foreigners feel weird or squeamish, like dog
hotpot, insects, scorpions, snakes, rats, pig's ears, heads, feet, hearts,
lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines, and boiled blood.
Crazy Vegetable Variety
Crazy variety is not limited to China's
"meats"… Many of China's vegetables and fruit you won't have seen or
heard of before, like pomeloes, bitter cucumber, yard-long yams, tree fungi,
and dozens of untranslatable weed-like plants.
Also, according to Chinese medicine food
must be eaten in season to combat too much yin (cold weather) and yang (hot
weather), dryness, or dampness. E.g. huge white radishes (with high yang) are
very popular in winter.
Dish Names Can Be Misleading
Chinese like to give to dishes catchy
names. Some names have nothing to do with their ingredients. For example:
'Husband Wife Lung Slices' is not
cannibalism (which you'll be relieved is not allowed in China), but thinly
sliced bovine lung, tongue, or some other cut, seasoned with chili oil.
'Ants climb trees' (蚂蚁上树 mǎyǐ shàng shù) is vermicelli with spicy minced pork.
Remember, a 'field chicken' (田鸡 tiánjī) is a frog! A tour guide or translator will help you avoid
surprises. We offer our services below.
Food Is Superstitiously Symbolic
Chinese attach particular meanings to
certain foods based on shapes, colors, pronunciations, and legends.
Superstition and tradition dictate certain foods must be eaten for certain
festivals/events to invoke a blessing.
For example, ingot-shaped dumplings mean
wealth at New Year, and round mooncakes represent family reunion at Mid-Autumn.
See The Symbolism of Chinese Foods.
Q:
What do you think the saying that Chinese
eat almost everything that moves?
What are the Chinese dishes you like most?
What are the Chinese weird food?
In your opinion, what are the Chinese food
could combat cold weather and hot weather?
Do you know any superstitions with food? What
are the food symbolic good luck?
What are the local food you would recommend

What Would You Do if You Were President? Shannon Doyne
MICHAEL J. SANDEL: I would invest in an infrastructure for civic renewal — not just roads and bridges, but schools, transit, playgrounds, parks, community centers, health clinics, libraries and national service.
SHARON OLDS: I’d grant the very rich the boon of helping them help others, as a form of gratitude for their good fortune.
ANDREW WEIL: I’d tell the nation that I was powerless to control the war machine, Wall Street, big oil and the other interests that run the country, and I would urge Americans to form a new political party not beholden to them.
DANNY MEYER: I’d appoint a blue-ribbon committee of 14 accomplished citizens — one each representing these nonpolitical walks of American life: arts, science, sports, big business, entrepreneurs, tech, medicine, law, education, environment, defense, religion, farming and philanthropy — and charge them with imagining innovative industries that put Americans to work and add value to our world.
JAMES Q. WILSON: With my staff, I would decide what my administration was for. Once I had clarified that, I would write several speeches on how to cope with a stagnant economy, how to deal with countries (such as Iran and Syria) that harass their own populations, and how the United States is committed to the survival of Israel. These speeches would not attack the other party or previous presidents but would describe the views I supported.
JENNIFER EGAN: I’d decide (privately) from the outset that mine would be a one-term presidency. Freed from the stranglehold of ensuring my own political longevity, I would focus entirely on achieving what I think most Americans want: a stable and productive economy; an environmentally viable planet; a humane, efficient government capable of educating its young and protecting its vulnerable members.
GEOFFREY CANADA: I would have a “grown-up” talk with the American people, emphasizing that we are facing a crisis and solving it will require a spirit of shared sacrifice. Those of us who have benefited mightily from this country and made billions, as well as those who make the minimum wage, must all sacrifice.
Q:
What would you do differently if you were president?
How would you try to solve the problems facing Taiwan?
How to help those who make the minimum wage?
Should levied more tax from wealthy people?
How to improve the well-being for civilians
How would you invest in an infrastructure?
How to improve education, environment, and defense systems?

Only Tell Your Problems to Two People
While being an open-book has noble qualities, few things can destroy our lives as much as failing to have boundaries with other people. Telling everything to everyone can have disastrous consequences.
No one was created to navigate this world on their own. No matter the pain and sorrow of past relationships, everyone should risk inviting someone into their lives and sharing their problems with someone.
This raises a key question: Whom should I tell of my struggles?
When it comes to the private issues of life, I would recommend only telling your problems to two people:
Only tell someone who can help. This is the most important rule when in the midst of a difficult situation. It provides a guardrail from keeping you from telling to many people. Only tell those who can help you deal with the issue. When I deal with couples who are dealing with an affair, I tell them—tell one friend, one pastor, and one counselor. The friend can help you with the details of life, the pastor can assist you spiritually, and the counselor can help your marriage. Don’t tell anyone else unless it is absolutely necessary. While it feels necessary to tell every friend and family member, it will not be helpful. Remember: you can always decide later to tell someone else, but once you tell someone you cannot take it back.
Think twice before you tell once.
Q:
Whom should we tell of our struggles?
Who is the person you trust most?
Should you share secrets with your partner?
Is it good to be an outspoken person?
Can you keep secrets for your friends?
What do you think of this saying? “Telling everything to everyone can have disastrous consequences”

Happiness Matters
Does happiness matter? People react to this question in surprisingly different ways. Some suggest that there are far more significant things to worry about; others see happiness as vitally important and something that every human being ultimately wants in life.
When it comes to the happiness of society as a whole, however, the sad truth is that in recent decades we have become substantially richer but no happier. The positive benefits of higher incomes have been undermined by rising inequality and falling levels of trust and social cohesion. We’ve also reached the point where mental ill health is one of our greatest social challenges – causing more of the suffering in our society than either unemployment or poverty.
This is why increasing numbers of policymakers and leaders are now calling for measures of progress to be based on human wellbeing and happiness, not just economic factors such as growth in GDP. Here in the UK, the government has introduced a programme to measure national wellbeing, and influential figures – including former cabinet secretary Gus O’Donnell – are calling for wellbeing to become the overall measure of prosperity and the main guide to public policy.
This shift towards prioritising happiness is important because this also reflects what the majority of people want. In a YouGov poll commissioned by Action for Happiness, a majority (87%) of UK adults said they would prefer a society with the “greatest overall happiness and wellbeing”, rather than the “greatest overall wealth” (8%). The findings were consistent across all regions, age groups and social classes.
So happiness does matter – the scientific evidence is compelling. The pursuit of happiness is not some fluffy nice-to-have or middle-class luxury; it’s about helping people to live better lives and creating a society that is more productive, healthy and cohesive. As Aristotle said: “Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”
Of course, being happy is not some magical cure-all. Happy people still get sick and lose loved ones – and not all happy people are efficient, creative or generous. But, other things being equal, happiness brings substantial advantages.
Perhaps the most powerful insight of all comes, not from the research, but from the responses I’ve heard from many hundreds of parents when asking them what they want above all for their children. Nearly all say something like: “I really just want them to be happy.”
Q:
How to pursuit of happiness?
What are the ways to cope when things go wrong?
Why it's more important to be happy than to be rich?
What are the factors that impacting on your mood?
Reasons money does bring happiness?
Reasons money doesn’t bring happiness?

Ten ways you know you're turning into a local in Taiwan CNA (By Monica Mizzi)
You're mostly over your 101 obsession
Your Facebook news feed is basically a shrine to photos of Taipei 101 that your friends upload on a daily basis. But now you only take the occasional picture, and only when you're convinced you've captured the perfect balance of lighting and composition that is completely unlike any of the other million or so photos of 101 out there.
You plan your Typhoon Days
The night before a typhoon hits, you constantly refresh the official government forecast page in the hope that you will see the magical words -- "school and work cancelled." Even before it's announced you've already planned the whole day off to a tee, and have booked a karaoke room in advance because you know its impossible to do so once the day off is official.
You barely feel the earth move anymore
You barely blink an eye when you feel a minor earthquake, but when it's a really big one you excitedly update your Facebook and share stories the next day detailing exactly where you were, your reaction and afterthoughts.
You know the correlation between drinking and foreign language fluency
After several rounds of cheap beer and shouting ganbei! (乾杯, bottoms up) at rechao (熱炒) restaurants you're absolutely convinced your Mandarin has dramatically improved and that everyone must bear witness to your new-found fluency.
You're all over the local places to score cheap eats
You cringe at paying more than NT$150 (US$4.45) for a meal, even though to eat out regularly in your home country you basically have to take out a bank loan.
Q:
Do you know Taiwan?

The Real Meaning of 'Good' and 'Evil' stevenmtaylor.co.uk
What do we really mean when we use these simplistic terms, ‘good’ and ‘evil’?
‘Good’ means a lack of self-centredness. It means the ability to empathise with other people, to feel compassion for them, and to put their needs before your own. It means, if necessary, sacrificing your own well-being for the sake of others’. It means benevolence, altruism and selflessness, and self-sacrifice towards a greater cause - all qualities which stem from a sense of empathy. It means being able to see beyond the superficial difference of race, gender or nationality and relate to a common human essence beneath them.
All of the ‘saintly’ people in human history have these qualities in abundance. Think of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, risking their own safety and well-being for the goal of gaining equal rights and freedom for Indians and African Americans. These were human beings with an exceptional degree of empathy and compassion, which overrode any concern for their own ambitions or well-being.
‘Evil’ people are those who are unable to empathise with others. As a result, their own needs and desires are of paramount importance. They are selfish, self-absorbed and narcissistic. In fact, other people only have value for them to the extent that they can help them satisfy their own desires, or to which they can exploit them. This applies to dictators like Stalin and Hitler, and to serial killers and rapists - I would argue that their primary characteristics is an inability to empathise with others. They can’t sense other people’s emotions or their suffering, can’t see the world from other people’s perspective, have no sense of their rights. Other human beings are just objects to them, which is what makes their brutality and cruelty possible.
Good and Evil as Flexible
The real difference between this idea of ‘good and evil’ and the traditional concept is that empathy or a lack of empathy aren’t fixed. Although people with a psychopathic personality appear to be unable to develop empathy, for most of us, empathy - or goodness - is a quality that can be cultivated. This is recognised by Buddhism, and most other spiritual traditions. As we practise meditation or mindfulness, and as we become less attached to materialism and status-seeking, we become more open and more connected, and so more selfless and altruistic.
Q:
Are some people just born evil? Or just born kindness?
Are you willing sacrifice your own well-being for the sake of others?
Are serial killers born or created?
What do you think about altruism and egoism?
How to cultivate compassion for someone you dislike?
How to show empathy?

Think Sarcasm is Funny? Think Again Copyright by Clifford N. Lazarus, Ph.D. Psychologytoday
Sarcasm is really just hostility disguised as humor
If you want to be happier and improve your relationships, cut out sarcasm since sarcasm is actually hostility disguised as humor. Despite smiling outwardly, most people who receive sarcastic comments feel put down and usually think the sarcastic person is a jerk. Indeed, it’s not surprising that the origin of the word sarcasm derives from the Greek word “sarkazein” which literally means “to tear or strip the flesh off.” Hence, it’s no wonder that sarcasm is often preceded by the word “cutting” and that it hurts.
What’s more, since actions strongly determine thoughts and feelings, when a person consistently acts sarcastically it usually only heightens his or her underlying hostility and insecurity. After all, when you come right down to it, sarcasm is a subtle form of bullying and most bullies are angry, insecure, cowards. Alternatively, when a person stops voicing negative comments, especially sarcastic and critical ones, he or she soon starts to feel happier and more self-confident. Also, the other people in his or her life benefit even faster because they no longer have to hear the emotionally hurtful language of sarcasm.
Now I’m not saying all sarcasm is bad. It’s just better used sparingly – like a potent spice in cooking. Too much spice and the dish will be overwhelmed by it. Similarly, an occasional dash of sarcastic wit can spice up a chat and add an element of humor to it. But a big or steady serving of sarcasm will overwhelm the emotional flavor of any conversation and taste very bitter to its recipient.
Q:
Is using sarcasm good while chatting?
Is it good to put somebody down?
What are the topics should be avoid when meeting someone new?
What are the factors that increase hostility?
How to avoid using personal judgment words?
How to deal with a sarcastic person?
