A washed-up actor, who once played an iconic superhero, battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career and himself in the days leading up to the opening of his Broadway play.

5 Ways To Bounce Back From ‘Failure’ In Your Career (Dan Miller)

Can you ‘bounce back’ from a failure in your career?

Here is what I’ve observed. To come back from “failure,” a person must have:

1. Supportive Relationships
Without others who believe in us we begin to question our value and worth. If family and those closest to you find fault and criticize, find those who will encourage and cheer you on.

2. Uncompromising Integrity
Nothing destroys our credibility and opportunities more quickly than breaches of integrity. Once begun, lies, distortions and exaggerations tend to feed on themselves and require more of the same in an attempt to maintain the status quo.

3. Clear Purpose
Without a clear vision for the future we become wandering generalities. Be able to convey with confidence your strongest areas of competence. No one is attracted to someone who just “wants a job.” Know your unique value to an organization.

4. Vibrant Health
It’s tempting in times of feeling like a failure to allow ourselves pity parties and comfort food, thus deteriorating another area of our lives. Use times of rebuilding to make massive deposits of success in your health. With the guy above who lost $3.2 million I prescribed that he go to the gym every morning for two hours. The physical stamina and creative energy birthed there allowed him to very quickly bounce back with career success.

5. Optimistic Faith
Believing that we are part of a bigger plan and that there is a brighter future up ahead is critical to coming back from any failure.

Questions:
What are the ways to bounce back from ‘failure’ in your career?
Can you ‘bounce back’ from a failure in your career? (for example: losing jobs or bankrupt)
What we can learn from failure? How to overcome your difficulties?
What to do when things go wrong?
How to have vibrant health?
How to keep optimistic faith?
What are the lessons can we learn from successful people?

Things We Mistake for Happiness and How to Correct Them
by Kin Mabuan

A job you don’t like doing.
Sure, paying the bills and keeping a healthy savings account are valid reasons for why you should get a job, but it’s equally important that what you do for a living makes you happy. It’s simple: happiness at work makes you more productive, makes your coworkers and clients like you, and it helps you get closer to success.
Sometimes, however, the same job that you gave an arm and leg to snag becomes the thing you dread doing the next day. To be fair, it’s perfectly normal to grumble a bit about having to work over time all of a sudden, or being given a last-minute deadline on a Friday night, but if you can’t get through the day without whining about your job and still claim that you love it, it’s time to rethink your reasons for why you’re staying in that company.
Watching too much television.
Television has gotten a lot of flak thanks to programs that capitalize on our insatiable need to be validated at all costs. To be fair, there a lot of good programs out there, ones that will rehydrate your interest in the arts and in science, or teach you how to cook a mean slab of rib eye.
There are times, however, when we mindlessly flip through channels and indulge ourselves by watching shows without giving what we see and hear much thought. We rely a bit too much on shows to explain everything for us and take this as the ultimate truth.
An obsession with perfection.
One of the funny things about pursuing perfection is that no matter how many times we are told that nobody and nothing is perfect (except maybe Emma Watson), it doesn’t stop us from wanting to achieve it. This is a good trait to a degree, but if our fixation on wanting everything to be perfect gets in the way of actually accomp

Sense of humor is one of the few things thalishing things, then we won’t really achieve anything.
Having too many friends on social media.
Never has making friends and staying connected been easier until social media happened, but you got to admit that it’s not always the best way. It can be quite flattering to have a lot of followers in your social network until all you see on your dashboard is crazy narcissistic behavior put on display.
Of course, social media isn’t bad per se. On the other hand, it can be an easy source of angst, frustration even. A lot of people have picked up the habit of posting everything that goes on with their life, and while it can be harmless to find out what your friend had for lunch two hours ago, not everyone is in the mood for fifty versions of a single selfie all the time. There are many other ways social media can drive people into their wits’ end, but the point is you don’t have to bear with them.
Making fun of other peoplet will never go out of style, and it’s amazing to be funny and to have friends who can crack you up. Sometimes though, we become too comfortable with our funniness. We barely
notice that we cross certain lines. The thing is we don’t realize this until someone calls it out or when we start losing friends one by one.

Questions:
How to find happiness? What are the things to do for your happiness?
What to do if you don’t like your job?
What are the pros and cons of having too many friends on social media?
What are the pros and cons of social networking sites?
What are the pros and cons of watching television?
How to develop the sense of humor?
Are you obsessed with perfection? What are the problems with perfection?

Stay Slim Even AFTER Chinese New Year! (dreamsincredibles.blogspot.tw)

Chinese New Year.

My physical fitness instructor friend told me that almost 100% of her clients gain 1-3kg during the CNY festive season. If that is one worry you are worrying about, here are some tips for keeping yourself slim during CNY ;)

1) Drink a glass of water 30 minute before each meal.
Before each meal, drink a glass of water 30 minutes before. Sometimes, our body may mistake thirst for hunger so it is good to drink some water before your meal so that you will not overeat...

2) Drink a fibre drink 30 min before each meal
If water does not satisfy you, taking a fibre product 30 minute before each meal is likely to keep you full and fulfilling and you will thus tend to eat less. A good source of fibre would be HUNZA Fibre Plus or HUNZA Life Enhancer (which is not only filling but also helps to increase metabolic rate to promote burning of fats, prevents absorption of fats AND also removes existing fats in your colon.

3) Sit near the vegetables
When you are seated near the vegs, you have a higher chance of eating more vegetables. It is always good to take more vegs as compared to the rich foods like meats and seafoods (which are much for fattening than fats).

4) Stay away from soft drinks and beer
Drinking an excessive amount of soft drinks and beer during CNY can add on to your beer belly as well! Because they are high in sugar levels and carbo, you will tend to put on even more easily when you eat other goodies together with them.

Do You Believe in Fate or Destiny? by Aya Hajime chataboutyou

Fate or destiny refers to a predetermined sequence of events or outcomes.

Why do we believe in fate?

Many of us believe in fate because it offers us comfort and security. When bad events occur, fate tells us that this is all part of a greater plan. This gives our tragedies meaning.

On the other hand, if all outcomes are written in stone, then we have no control of our own destinies. As a result, lack of free will may cause feelings of helplessness, and worthlessness, which can lead to depression. If we cannot change anything, then there is no point in trying, and no ownership of action.

Fate and Free Will

A literal belief in fate usually precludes free-will. However, there are various non-literal interpretations that allow fate to coexist with independent action.

Here are 4 common interpretations of fate -
Some believe that there are a predetermined finite set of outcomes. Our actions may allow us to change paths, but all the possible outcomes are fated.
Some believe that what we choose is predetermined. In essence, all the choices that we make are already written in cosmic dust, and part of a larger plan. Although it may seem that we have free-will, our choices are simply an illusion.
Some believe that fate refers to our inexorable drive to survive. This most basic instinct compels us to act in certain predetermined ways, which may be seen as a type of fate. More generally, our genetic code affects much of our future actions and decisions, and thus our fate.
Some believe that the entire universe is deterministic, thus everything within it is deterministic as well (i.e., governed by a fixed set of physical laws). Given a set of initial conditions, we can accurately determine the outcomes based on these physical laws. This suggests that all of our fates were set at the start of the universe.

How to Cope With Post Holiday Syndrome (wikihow.com)

After spending a wonderful holiday over the New Year period, some people feel blue and find that it's difficult to function normally in their daily rhythm. As defined by the DSM IV, holiday blues, holiday depression, these commonly used terms depict the mental distress occurring after the winter holidays and festival season. This article is focused on experiencing the "blues” since this term suggests mild mental distress, a commonly occurring phenomenon when dealing with daily life stress and change.

Cope With Post Holiday Syndrome Step
1
Expect some letdown. The holiday season is both joyful and stressful at once. There is family to get along with, gifts to buy and return, people to visit, activities to throw yourself into, plenty of festive food to eat, sales to rush to, and parties to plan and attend. Topped off with the excitement of New Year's Eve, your adrenaline has probably been pumping a lot of the time during the New Year's period. Returning to the usual routine and probably quieter workplace than normal can dampen your spirits just by the absence of exciting things to do and look forward to. Equally, if your New Year's Eve period wasn't as enjoyable as you had hoped, you can be left feeling down about the lack of enjoyment you'd expected and this can sour your mood. Expecting to feel a little low is a way of telling yourself that this is a normal feeling and that it will soon pass once the routine re-establishes itself.
2
Get Rid of Lower Belly Fat Step
Be gentle on yourself with respect to your New Year's Resolutions. If you set the bar too high and you already feel as if you're slipping, don't berate yourself. Instead, look at your resolutions realistically and assess whether they need some tweaking to ensure that they're achievable. Discard the resolutions that required you to be too harsh on yourself and reform them into ones that can be met now that the heady atmosphere of New Year's Eve is behind you. Think of it as a double checking of the details, and simply fiddle with the fine print! •Ensure that any goals you've set are reasonable and most importantly achievable. Taking weight loss as an example, targeting for a size zero is unrealistic, but looking for 1 pound loss in a span of week seems to be more achievable.
3
Make healthy choices. After the many indulgences over the holiday period, it can leave you feeling a little out of shape and worse for wear in the nutrition department. Aim to return to eating healthy food, drinking healthy drinks, and ensuring that you keep getting a good amount of exercise. Eating well and keeping up regular exercise will enhance your mood and help you return to good shape and fitness levels.

Your Top 5 Tips for Learning English ecenglish.com
Dear EC team,

Here are my 5 advices how to learn English. Hope you`ll like them.
1.Watch a film on your national language, try to remember every dialog. If it`s necessary watch it for the second time and then download an English version. The main thing is to be attentive! This is the best way to learn everyday phrases.
2.Find lyrics of your favorite songs in the internet, Translate them using dictionary and then sing aloud in spite of having ear. Work on your pronounce.
3.Turn on TV, find an English channel, take pen and a paper and try to write down the information given in the creeping line. It will be difficult for the first time but finally you`ll do that! Helps to write quickly and correctly. Pay attention to your spelling! Then translate written information using dictionary.
4.Of course you`ll have to learn grammar and read books with or without the help of teacher.
5.Finally, I think the best way of learning English is to talk with the English, of course systematically. This will give fantastic result in a short time.

Dear EC team,
Here are my hints or better said, the way how I try to learn English:
1.Try to use English every day. Quantity is not as important as periodicity.
2.Read books. There you can find common phrases which can be used in your daily life. Say them loud to remember.
3.Listen to English broadcast. For instance BBC has lots of material. I love various how-tos and lingos. As in <2>, you are in contact with applied contemporary English.
4.When looking for a word you do not know yet, always use more than one dictionary. My favourites are by Cambridge, Oxford, thefreedictionary.com and Longman Family Dictionary (can be accessed online, the last one is a printed book). Sometimes you can find something which is contained in only one of the dictionaries.
5.Do not hesitate to visit an English speaking country, if you can. A week gives you more than six months at home. And trust me, I know what I am speaking about.
Questions:
What are your tips for learning English? How to talk in English fluently?
Do you think watch a film and find lyrics of your favorite English songs help you learning English?

Ways to Have a Happy New Year  livescience by Wynne Parry

Research also shows it's possible to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. One of the creators of the World Gratitude Map, Jacqueline Lewis, shares some tips on how to feel more grateful, and happier, in your New Year.

Once you find your sources of gratitude, you can post them to the web-based Map, which helps people around the world record and share the things for which they feel grateful.

1. Slow down and take notice: Pick three good things that you see or experience during the day, then write them down or post them on the World Gratitude Map. You can also throw a quarter or a dollar in a jar. When it's filled, treat yourself, or better yet, someone else, Lewis suggests.

2. Saying thank you: Take time to thank someone every day, anything from a card to an email or a hand on the shoulder will do. Connecting with others this way will help you get outside of your own head, Lewis said. Research that came out in May revealed a simple "thank you" may boost relationship satisfaction. The undergraduates in the study, detailed in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, reported feeling more appreciative of their partners the day after they themselves felt more appreciated. Those who felt appreciated were also less likely to break up in the following nine months, saying they felt even more committed to each other at that time.

3. Build in ways to help others: For example, Lewis recalls throwing a party and asking that, in lieu of gifts, guests bring gift cards to donate to a local shelter. Science has shown those people who buy gifts for friends or give charitable donations experience a happiness boost not seen in individuals who spend on themselves. That study was published in 2008 in the journal Science.

5. Find ways to connect to faraway loved ones: Around Easter one year, when Lewis' mother was dying, Lewis said she brought friends and family together in spirit, or at least costume, by asking everyone to send photos of themselves wearing bunny ears for "Bunnyfest." Another example: Lewis said her sister and a remote friend have used Skype to cook together.

Miss Colombia crowned Miss Universe in Miami
Associated Press By KELLI KENNEDY January

MIAMI (AP) — Miss Colombia Paulina Vega, a relative pageant newcomer, has been crowned Miss Universe, beating out first runner-up Miss USA Nia Sanchez and contestants from more than 80 other countries at Sunday's pageant in Miami.

Vega, a 22-year-old student of business administration from Barranquilla, Colombia, said she would wear the crown with "pride and excitement" as she heard the news that fans in Colombia had taken to the streets to celebrate.

Although she was far from home, Vega said she still felt the support from local Latinos.

"It felt like home. I felt like I was in Colombia with my people. I felt that support in every moment of the pageant," she said, wearing a sparkling silver gown with vertical stripes at a press conference after the competition.

Real estate mogul and reality TV star Donald Trump, who owns the pageant, said many predicted Vega would take the crown a few weeks ago when contestants first arrived in Miami for the festivities.

"From the minute she walked in the building, people said, 'She's a star,'" Trump said.

Vega's win keeps the title in the hands of another Latina — reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler is from Venezuela. Beauty pageants are big business in Latin America, where girls are groomed for the contests from a young age and where Vega said women find "a lot of pride" in representing their country.

Crowd favorite Miss Venezuela Migbelis Lynette Castellanos was cut after the top ten. She had tremendous support and pressure locally and back home. The Miami suburb of Doral, which was host to the women during their stay, is also known as "Doralzuela" for its many Venezuelan residents.

Pageants and performance run in Vega's family. Her grandmother, Elvira Castillo, was Miss Atlántico 1953 (Colombia) and her grandfather is legendary tenor Gastón Vega.
