TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The EasyCard Corp. (悠遊卡公司) defended its decision yesterday to have a veteran actress in Japanese adult films appear on upcoming contactless smartcards covers on the island starting next month.

The actress in question, Yui Hatano (波多野結衣), 27, has filmed over 1,200 adult-themed videos, and will appear in an EasyCard series called "Demons and Angels," which will be released on Sept. 1. Around 30,000 copies will be available for sale and the proceeds from the limited edition set will go to charitable foundations.

In a press conference, EasyCard stated that Hatano was not an "official sponsor" representing the company but rather she was first photographed by a Taiwanese photographer and the images were later authorized by her media agency. The company described the images of Hatano represented a "healthy aesthetic" consisting of no inappropriate or suggestive material. It also urged customers not to make certain "associations."

However, several netizens contradicted the company's claims, saying that one of the images of the forthcoming "Demons and Angels" series was not an original, but taken from the video image cover of a work previously completed by Hatano. Several media outlets have already confirmed that the image corresponds to a video that was released in July 2014. In a press statement released later in the evening, the company confirmed that it was replacing one of the card covers with another image.

Asked by reporters if he knew about the company's decision, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) replied: "Who is she?"

The mayor laughed jovially when asked whether he found the images too racy. Ko appeared skeptical about the marketing strategy of EasyCard co-Chairman Tai Chi-chuan (戴季全), saying that 65 to 75 percent of EasyCard users were female. Stating that it was up to Tai to handle this situation, he also reminded the corporate leader that "sales increases are not everything."

This morning when I woke up, the sun was shining and I felt good – optimistic, energetic and eager to see what the day would bring. Over breakfast, I turned the radio on. Yet another ageing celebrity had been arrested for sexual offences. There was more bad news on the economy. I picked up a newspaper later. A 15-year-old boy had been stabbed to death. Homelessness is on the rise. Global warming; NHS cuts; another food scandal – by the time I started work, I felt defeated, exhausted and depressed.

I don’t want to stick my head in the sand, but isn’t it tempting to just turn off?

Absolutely, says clinical psychologist Dr Cecilia d’Felice. She believes that going on a ‘bad news diet’ – restricting the amount of news you expose yourself to – can protect your mood, and also enable you to look at the bigger picture in a clearer, more emotionally balanced way.  ‘We are so influenced by the media and its portrayal of global events that it influences how we take personal bad news,’ she explains.‘Being saturated with bad news on an almost hourly basis can make our own world feel out of control. It can make us reactive rather than reflective.’

The problem, says social psychologist Dr Sandra Wheatley, is that our brains are wired to zoom in on bad news, and to give it undue precedence. ‘At an evolutionary level, bad news shows us what we need to react and attend to so we can protect ourselves. That’s why people are more comfortable considering the negative rather than the positive. Even statistics, when they are reported, tend to focus on the negative.’

Dashrath Manjhi – The Man Who Moved a Mountain - The Mountain Man  Bhushan Reddy

Dasrath Manjhi, a landless farmer from India, made history after he spent over two decades chiseling away at a mountain with rudimentary tools, in order to create a road for his community, when the Government refused to.

If you're looking for some motivation, stories don't get much more inspirational than that of Dasrath Manjhi. 53 years ago, he set out to carve a 1mk-long path through a rocky hillside, all by himself, in order to make it easier for his fellow villagers to access schools, markets and neighboring villagers. “This hill had given us trouble and grief for centuries. The people had asked the government many times to make a proper road through the hill, but nobody paid any attention. So I just decided I would do it all by myself,” Manjhi told Indian newspaper Tehelka, in 2007, a shortly before succumbing to the cancer that was plaguing him. With just his chisel, hammer and shovel, this legendary man turned what was once a precarious one-foot-wide passage into a 360 ft-long, 30 ft-wide road accessible by bicycle and motorcycle. The hill kept the region’s villages in isolation, forcing people to trek through dangerous terrain for hours just to reach their lands or the nearest market town. Children had to walk eight kilometers to reach school, but thanks to Dasrath Manjhi’s handmade road, that distance has been reduced to three kilometers, and people from over 60 villages now use it every day.

But what empowered a single man to accomplish such a monumental task? For Dasrath it was the love for his wife. “My wife, Faguni Devi, was seriously injured while crossing the hill to bring me water; I worked then on a farm across the hills. That was the day I decided to carve out a proper road through this hill,” the farmer said. Sadly, his beloved wife didn't get to see the fruits of his labor, as shortly after the accident she fell ill and died, because she couldn’t be taken to the hospital in time. The tragic loss only made the ambitious man more focused on his task, and fellow villagers remember seeing him “ hacking at the hill day and night as if he were possessed”. But with the passing years, his motivation changed. “My love for my wife was the initial spark that ignited in me the desire to carve out a road. But what kept me working without fear or worry all those years was the desire to see thousands of villagers crossing the hill with ease whenever they wanted,” Manjhi said in an interview.

Why do we bike?

As advocates, we’re quick to point out the benefits we can measure: It burns calories, reduces air pollution, relieves traffic congestion and costs less than car ownership. But, for those of us who ride, we know there are even bigger upsides to cycling: Biking makes us feel good. And now there’s data to prove it.

Thanks to researchers at Clemson and the University of Pennsylvania, a study released in 2014 made it official: Folks who bike to their destinations are the happiest. Using the American Time Use Survey, collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Eric Morris and Erick Guerra were able to determine the average mood felt by people during different types of travel — and the demeanor of cyclists was significantly better than car drivers, passengers or public transit riders. Talk about a selling point for cycling.

“Happiness is one of the most ancient subjects researchers have thought about: how do you live the good life?” Morris told us. “With modern data gathering, we can finally get some empirical answers with evidence rather than just speculation. Happiness is very widely studied in economics and psychology, but the study of happiness has come late to the field of transportation, urban planning and cities.”

Morris isn’t a bicyclist himself, and, honestly, didn’t go into the research with any sense that cycling would play significantly into the findings. And while the magnitude of the results — the far more positive moods of bicyclists even when controlling for the physical health of the traveler — was surprising, the notion that bikes give us a mental boost is backed by other research.

“First, exercise really elevates your mood,” Morris said. “But also, I think you’re probably made happier on a bicycle because you feel you're achieving something. It’s been shown that people don’t like tasks that are way too hard for them — but they do like a task that is difficult and they can just accomplish it. From bicycling, you get that sense of mastery and proving to yourself that you’re skilled, rather than just sitting and riding in a bus or a car.”

What does that mean for marketing biking to the masses? While cycling has plenty of perks, this type of research helps advocates make the ultimate pitch.

愛妻慘死山難 男花22年愚公移山

【動新聞╱綜合報導】印度一名貧困農工曼吉(Dashrath Manjhi)，他的的妻子不幸在山谷中遇難，由於地處偏僻，加上山路阻隔，導致他的妻子延誤送醫而送命。為了避免悲劇重演，曼吉花了22年「愚公移山」開鑿山谷通道，大愛精神感動無數人，他的故事近日被拍成寶萊塢電影《山人》(The Mountain Man)。

　　曼吉的妻子菲谷妮(Falguni)於1959年在當地一處山谷遇上意外，由於地處偏僻，距離最近的小鎮需長途跋涉55公里，當時救護人員未能及時趕到現場，將妻子送往醫院搶救，最終喪命。曼吉不希望悲劇重演，隔年他展開「愚公移山」的浩大工程，單憑錘子與鑿子等工具，日以繼夜工作，最後他在1982年打通山谷與小鎮間的通道，讓原本55公里的距離大幅縮短至15公里。當地政府也在曼吉完工的30年後，將道路鋪平，成為當地居民主要的通道。

　　故事感動無數人，寶萊塢電影發行商也將曼吉的事蹟翻拍成電影。曼吉於2007年因癌症離世，享年73歲，當時政府認為他的貢獻大，以國葬等級為他舉辦喪禮。

Adjusting the privates

This isn't something that you grow out of after puberty. Men have a lot of fascination with what lurks beneath and as long as they have full use of their hands, a lot of time can be spent down there 'sorting the boys out.' It may not be sexual, and may just be for the purposes of comfort but it is something that women time and time again complain about. Despite the reason, it isn't the most hygienic practice and the image of a man lying on the couch with a bag of chips in one hand and his manhood in the other will never break into a woman's top ten sexual fantasies.

Selective hearing

Men all over the world have sat in front of a television and watched a program while their wife or girlfriend attempted to initiate a conversation with them. It never ends well. Apart from 'eating chips, adjusting the privates and watching the TV,' scientists have demonstrated that men are less capable than women at multitasking; yet we still attempt to watch TV and listen to her. The TV usually wins. This phenomenon happens in other situations too, like when driving, eating, or reading. Pretending to listen to her or selectively listening to her is more annoying to women than just not listening at all.

Ogling

Women absolutely despise catching their men ogling other women. Women ogle too, visually admiring the opposite sex just as much as their male counterparts, except they generally do it with a greater level of subtlety. You might not be able to help it but you can at least be more discreet about it. There are multiple levels of irritation she experiences when she catches you ogling: she is annoyed, threatened, embarrassed, and she is likely also angered by the fact that you can't do it well enough that she doesn't notice.

This is one of my favorite inspiring movies, without question. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins star in this movie that inspires and moves you. Tim Robbins plays Andy Defresne who is wrongly accused of a crime and is sentenced to prison where he meets Red (Morgan Freeman) and forges a lifelong friendship. This movie shows us how the power of hope and friendship can overcome anything life throws at us.

4. Radio

Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as Radio in this inspirational movie about friendship and acceptance. Radio becomes a student at a South Carolina high school and football coach Coach Jones (Ed Harris) takes Radio under his wing and encourages others to give Radio a chance. Funny and heartwarming, this feel-good movie shows us that deep down we are all the same and deserve respect.

4.      Eat Pray Love

Unhappy with your life and feel like you’re in a rut? Join Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) as she travels around the world for a change of scenery and goes on a journey to find herself after she goes through a difficult divorce and longs for a change in her life. This is one of the best inspiring movies to come out in a while.

5.      Rocky

Who can forget the rags-to-riches inspirational movie starring Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, an amateur boxer who rose to the top of the ranks through honesty, integrity and good old fashioned hard work. Rocky was the all-American boy who had to go up against boxers who were pumped up on steroids and cheating their way to the top. Rocky is a classic movie about overcoming odds and fighting the good fight.

Now, colouring books are enjoying something of a resurgence, as booksellers report a boost in sales thanks to an unexpected new fanbase. Retailers have claimed to have spotted a significant rise in sales after adults have begun buying colouring books for themselves. It is understood they have become popular for their theraputic benefits, allowing long-suffering workers to relax after a hard day's work. The trend, which has previously been reported from mainland Europe, is believed to have started with French women, who cast off their usual chic reputation to take to it in droves. It now appears to have moved decisively across the channel, with experts predicting sales will only grow from here on in. Melissa Cox, head of children’s buying at Waterstones, said staff had noticed an increasing trend for adults buying colouring books for themselves, with sales rising 300 per cent year on year. “Colouring books are selling better than ever, which initially surprised us when you think about all the games and toys children have. But they’re doing really well at the moment, and we realised adults have started to buy them for themselves. “It’s a trend that started in France and has been very popular with French women. It’s a relaxing thing to do, especially when you’re on the phone a lot. People say it’s proven to help you relax." She added booksellers had noticed a striking increase in demand for challenging, intricate designs to colour in, joking adult friends had begun to ask her whether she had any "spare colouring books" they could use. The reliability rate reported by an Italy-based team in the Journal of Urology comes from the latest of several studies stretching back decades and raises the prospect of canines’ sense of smell helping doctors identify a number of human cancers and infectious diseases. The two female dogs sniffed urine samples from 900 men, 360 with prostate cancer and 540 without. Both animals were right in well over 90% of cases. The paper’s authors, from the Humanitas Clinical and Research Centre in Milan and other institutes, admitted further work is needed to determine just how valuable the dogs’ skill might be in identifying, in daily practice, the signs of prostate cancer. Cancer of the prostate is the most common type of the disease in British men, with 40,000 new cases reported every year. Unanswered questions included what it was the dogs actually smelled and whether this was a single odour or those from a mixture of chemicals. At present, prostate cancer is detected by a blood test known as the PSA test, by physical examination and by biopsy. The PSA test is not routinely offered because it is not considered reliable enough for screening. The Italian results were welcomed by the Buckinghamshire-based charity Medical Detection Dogs, whose co-founder Claire Guest said its research indicated a 93% reliability rate for dogs.
