What are New Year's Resolutions?
    Written By: Michael Pollick

There is an old saying that a new broom sweeps clean. The first day of a new year also seems like an ideal time to sweep away one's past and start fresh. Many people form New Year's resolutions as part of their New Year's Day holiday ritual. These resolutions are usually vows or promises made on 1 January that address a number of goals for personal improvement. They often run the gamut from health issues to professional development to social improvements.

One of the most common New Year's resolutions is a vow to lose weight. Gyms and fitness centers across the world anticipate a surge in membership during the months of January and February, as millions of people make honest efforts to honor their pledges. Along with weight loss and body resculpting, many people also vow to improve their eating habits. Sales of whole or health foods tend to spike during the first few months of the year as diet trends shift. Many gym and health food store owners realize, however, that some resolutions may not survive until June.

Other New Year's resolutions address professional or financial goals. Some people vow to search for a better job or improve the conditions of the one they already have. Many people make resolutions to be more diligent about their personal bookkeeping, or to find additional sources of income during the upcoming year. Some may resolve to form a budget and live within their means instead of adding more debt.

People also set goals around social or spiritual improvements. Many people resolve to treat their spouses with more respect, or to be more sociable around others. Some promise to become more involved in their religious expressions or to become more tolerant of others. Those involving personal or spiritual growth can often be shared with spouses or other family members as a way to boost each other's level of commitment.

Some New Year's resolutions concern the elimination or acknowledgment of bad personal habits. Many people vow to quit smoking cigarettes or consuming alcohol in the new year. Others may attempt to control their tempers or curb their use of foul language. Making resolutions is a way for people to acknowledge some negative aspects of their lives and make a concrete promise to address those issues during the upcoming year.

Reasons Why You'll Benefit to Join a Gym Right Now   aol.com

Get Healthy

A gym encourages you to do a balanced program that includes both aerobic and strength training exercises. These promote heart health and weight loss, help prevent osteoporosis and improve muscle strength, balance and flexibility. If weight loss is a primary goal, consider the mantra of a friend who tells me "nothing tastes as good as getting in shape feels."

 Get Stress Relief

According to the Mayo Clinic, virtually any form of exercise can act as a stress reliever -- whether you're a serious athlete or an out of shape wannabe. Physical activity boosts the brain's production of endorphins, which simply makes us feel better physically and have a brighter emotional outlook. Exercise reduces tensions in both the body and the mind, which can improve your mood and the quality of your sleep. For many people, the gym becomes a bit of sanctuary where you can turn off the phone and forget all of the troubles at work or in your personal life.

 Learn From the Pros

Many gyms now have professional trainers on staff -- often people with college degrees in sports science or other related fields, along with personal training certificates. They are trained to design exercise programs that fit your individual needs in a fun and safe way, showing you proper exercise techniques so that you don't hurt yourself and that you get the most out of each exercise routine.

 Sweat Together

Many people find exercise classes to be the most efficient and fun way to get a full body workout. You can do everything from Aqua Arthritis (where there's a pool) to Zumba, and from kickboxing to yoga. There's usually a very energetic leader to help provide you with some extra energy and motivation. Many people do have to get over the hump initially of being the class newbie, where it seems like you're the only one who doesn't know the right steps or positions, or the only man in a class of a dozen women. (Granted, that's not necessarily a problem for all men) Don't worry though. They are concentrating on their own form and not watching yours.

用聲音創造好印象
How to use your voice to make a good impression    BY WILMA DEN HARTIGH

How to Talk, Act and Dress Your Way to Success, says good communication is a powerful sales tool and one of the most important factors that can influence business success.
Rissen-Harrisberg advises that people stay away from fake accents and an unnatural or forceful voice. "Use your voice pitch, which is how high or low the frequency of your voice is when you speak, to come across as sincere and confident", she says.
"The more serious you are, the more slowly you need to speak"
She adds that people who speak with a rich, resonant voice in the lower frequencies, are generally perceived to be more credible and sincere.
What can I do right now to improve my voice?
1. Practice breathing consciously. This means to breathe deeply. In this way your voice will come like a balloon from the stomach and will be projected out in a resounding way.
2. What if I mumble all the time? Open your mouth and project your voice. What often stops the sound is your teeth and lips. Practice opening your mouth by saying the word ‘ouch’.
3. Slow down. Speaking too quickly makes it difficult for other people to grasp what you are saying. Giving your speech meaning comes from using the correct pace. The more serious you are, the more slowly you need to speak (but within reason). This gives the listener time to pick up everything you say and understand that it is important.
4. Pause. While talking you would naturally pause to breathe. But pausing is also a powerful tool that adds colour and variety to speech. It gives listeners time to think about what you have just said and creates a bit of suspense.
5. Let down your barriers. Vulnerability and authenticity are two of the most captivating characteristics in a public speaker.
6. Don't over prepare. Know what you will be talking about, but over preparation can create separation from your audience. Sometimes the most memorable presentation is one where people can sense that you are present and say what comes to you in the moment.
7. Seek professional help. Voice training can help you develop a more flexible vocal tone using proper breathing techniques and vocal exercises to achieve a more flexible and varied tone.

Ways to Live a More Meaningful Life      David Loker   lifehack

Know What’s Important
Know what’s important for you. Write down your top 5 things that you believe are the essence of how you want to live life. This can include things like “family time,” or “sing every day.” It could also include more complex ideas, like “honesty” and “simplicity.”

Discover Your Life’s Purpose
If you had to give yourself a reason to live, what would it be? What would you stand for? What principles do you hold highest? Is your life’s purpose to help others? Is it to inspire others with great works of art, or you words? Finding your life’s purpose is a daunting task, and when I first heard the idea, I had no idea where to start. For methods on discovering your life’s purpose, I recommend Steve Pavlina’s blog entries on the subject. I also recommend reading the article What Makes Life Worth Living.

Be Self-Aware
Be aware of yourself and your actions. Remain mindful of what you do at all times, and make sure you are living life according to your principles, your life’s purpose, and what you are passionate about. Review your actions each day, taking stock of those that strayed from your path. Work towards correcting any incidents in the future. Meditation is a great tool for accomplishing this task. It helps us increase our self-awareness throughout the day.

Focus
Rather than chasing 3 or 4 goals and making very little progress on them, place all of your energy on one thing. Focus. Not only will you alleviate some of the stress associated with trying to juggle so many tasks, you will be much more successful. Try and align your goal with something you are passionate about, so that there will be an intrinsic drive to work hard and do well.

People More Than Things
Often, we are faced with wanting to buy material goods. I recommend you consider carefully what you purchase, and think more about spending your money on experiences with friends and family. Not only will this give deeper meaning to your life by focusing on your relationships rather than material wealth, but you will be a happier person as a result.

Find a Way to Give Back
Do something that both honors your beliefs and passions, while giving something back to the world. By giving something back, we inevitably find purpose in the act. By cultivating more of these activities, you will find your life has more meaning and purpose behind it.

Set Daily Goals
In the morning, before you start your day, create a list of 3 goals that you find fulfilling and meaningful. Make sure they adhere to your set of principles and beliefs. Tackle the hardest things first! Don’t make this list too long. By placing too many things on the list, you’ll feel the urge to multi-task, which is not good, or you’ll feel overwhelmed, which isn’t good either. By trying to do less, you’ll end up doing more.

How to Live a Good Life  wiki

Make a list of what people or things matter to you.

When looking for a life plan, it makes sense to prioritize some areas of your life. List all the things that you value in your life. You might list your family, friends, a certain hobby, nature, or career. Take the time to think deeply about the things without which you could not imagine living.
For example, while you might like playing basketball, is this one of the most important things in your life? Perhaps it is. If not, it is likely a hobby.

      Find your calling.

Every person has his or her own talents and strengths. Aim to live your life in reflection of your unique calling. Finding your calling does not mean following someone else’s path.

Instead, seek to define what you do well and how you can live a life that incorporates your strength and perhaps helps other people as well.
For example, you might be a talented teacher and musician. Perhaps your calling is to teach children piano lessons.
On the other hand, you might be a great listener and care about helping others. You might be well-suited to be a psychologist.
If dinosaur bones excite you to no end, perhaps your calling is paleontology and spreading knowledge about dinosaurs and environmental change to a new generation.

    Promote healthy communication.

Be direct when speaking to others. Listen carefully and attentively. If you have disagreements, try to fight effectively. That is, do not call each other names. Instead, discuss your problems calmly. Make sure you listen to the other person's point of view.
For example, it might be wise during arguments to repeat the other person's point of view. This shows you understand. You might say, "What I'm hearing you say is that you are annoyed by the fact that I am always home so late."
Ask rather than assume. If you feel a relationship is suffering in some way, talk to the other person openly and candidly.

Be a good neighbor. Part of living a good life comes from building a tight-knit local network. If you have neighbors, be helpful to them. Watch their cat when they go on vacation. Offer to shovel an elderly neighbor’s driveway. Practice neighborliness and you might find it is contagious.

Enjoying Life

Travel. See what there is to see in the world around you. Explore new areas in your neighborhood or town or if your budget allows, travel farther. There is no way we can visit every place in our lifetime. We can create awareness and develop empathy by traveling to other places, though.

    Practice hobbies.

In addition to your calling and life purpose, you also need to have plain fun! Find hobbies that interest you and incorporate them into your routine. For example, you might join a knitting group or start rock climbing. By doing hobbies, you also will meet more people and have a more fulfilled life.

Buried Alive: Saving, Collecting and Hoarding

(Allan Schwartz, LCSW, Ph.D Dr. Schwartz's Weblog)

What is meant by hoarding? The clinical definition of a hoarder is someone who has collected so much stuff that they can’t properly use rooms in their home, such as cooking on their stoves in the kitchen or sleeping in their beds because of piles of junk that have been accumulated. The hoarder is someone who is unable to throw anything out and who must shop for more stuff. There are often health risks to the hoarder, his family and to neighbors. The clutter and garbage attracts such things as insects, rodents and diseases. There is also the danger of fire and even cave-ins caused by the weight of carelessly piled possessions.

But, what is hoarding vs. what is collecting?

There are two very interesting programs on television connected to the problem of hoarding. One of them is on TLC and is called "Hoarding: Buried Alive" and the other is on the History channel called "Pickers." What is so interesting is that, while "Hoarding" deals with people who fit the clinical definition described above, "Pickers" deals with people who collect old things as a hobby. In both case, the hoarders or collectors, there are people who are unable to part with their possessions even when offered lots of money. On Hoarders, collecting junk is maladaptive behavior that is a form of mental illness related to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). On Pickers similar people appear to be smart businessmen who enjoy buying and collecting old junk as a kind of hobby and as a way of earning money by selling what they accumulate. The fact is that in both cases people are hoarding.

Where do the "pickers" fit in? As depicted in the program, pickers are people who rummage through the junk collected by other people for the purpose of buying items that they can sell at a profit. On the program, the two pickers own a store where their purchased items are sold to people who are either decorating anything from their own businesses to their apartments, houses or condominiums. Even though the pickers make their purchases in order to sell at a profit, is it possible that they, too, are hoarders? After all, if you have seen the program you know that much of what they buy is filled with dust, rot and rust. Is this purely picking or is it possible that this is hoarding.

Added to the mystery is where to place those who collect things for investment? There are people who collect postage stamps, gold and silver coins, and original works of art, among other similar hobbies? Is it possible that they are hoarders?

The question posed here is similar to the puzzle of what types of behavior are normal or abnormal? Like so many things in life, hoarding exists on a continuum that ranges from normal to abnormal. Collecting postage stamps in an album filled with new or mint stamps from around tbe world is a normal or healthy kind of collecting. It's a financial investment that does not interfere with living on a daily basis. On the other hand, accumlating piles of junk in one's home so that there is no place to sleep, cook, eat and even go to the toiletter, does interfere with daily life. In the wors of cases this type of accumlation can and does become a fire and health hazard.

Questions:

1. Why is hoarding a problem?

2. Is hoarding a psychological problem?

3. Can hoarding be treated?

4. Do you have hoarding tendencies?

5. Would you marry a hoarder if you knew they were one?

6. How do you keep your room tidy?

Christmas in Japan -- Christmas Around the World    whychristmas.com

Christmas has only been widely celebrated in Japan for the last few decades. It's still not seen as a religious holiday or celebration as there aren't many Christians in Japan. Now several customs that came to Japan from the USA such as sending and receiving Christmas Cards and Presents are popular.

In Japan, Christmas in known as more of a time to spread happiness rather than a religious celebration. Christmas Eve is often celebrated more than Christmas Day. Christmas Eve is thought of as a romantic day, in which couples spend together and exchange presents. In many ways it resembles Valentine's Day celebrations in the UK and the USA. Young couples like to go for walks to look at the Christmas lights and have a romantic meal in a restaurant - booking a table on Christmas Eve can be very difficult as it's so popular!

Fried chicken is often eaten on Christmas day. It is the busiest time of year for restaurants such as KFC and people can place orders at their local fast food restaurant in advance! There was an advertising campaign by KFC in the 1974 called 'Kentucky for Christmas!' (Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii!) which was very successful and made KFC popular for Christmas!

The traditional Japanese Christmas food is Christmas cake, but it's not a rich fruit cake, but is usually a sponge cake decorated with strawberries and whipped cream. The 'shortcake' emoji [🍰] is Japanese Christmas cake!

Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan. However, often schools are closed on Christmas Day. The Emperor's birthday is a national holiday on the 23rd December and there's also a New Year school break. So the holiday break often starts around the 23rd. But most businesses will treat the 25th as a 'normal' working day.

In Japanese Happy/Merry Christmas is 'Meri Kurisumasu'. And it's written in the two Japanese scripts like this; Hiragana: めりーくりすます; Katakana: メリークリスマス. Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages.

Parties are often held for children, with games and dancing. Japanese Christmas Cake is a sponge cake decorated with trees, flowers and a figure of Santa Claus.

In Japan Santa is known as サンタさん、サンタクロース santa-san (Mr Santa). Another Japanese gift bringer is Hoteiosho, a Japanese god of good fortune from Buddhism and not really related to Christmas.

The Japanese New Year (called 'o shogatsu') is more like a traditional Western Christmas. New year is the period where families get together, have a special meal, pray and send greetings cards. New year is celebrated over five days from December 31st to January 4th and is a very busy time.

A Pretend Friend Can Be a Foe, or Simply Someone You Know   hubpages.com

Why Pretend?

There can be all kinds of different reasons why someone might “pretend” to be your friend. Sometimes, it is simply to take advantage of your strengths and talents. For example, if you are someone who is an achiever, others might want to latch on to opportunities to get you to do things for them. I know someone who faced this situation in the workplace. She was really an “overachiever,” so she attracted a lot of “underachievers” as pretend friends. By latching onto the energy and skills of the overachiever, the underachievers were able to build up their own cred, as well as their portfolios of accomplishments, without really having to do the work themselves. What did they do? They latched onto what the overachiever was doing by convincing her to let them be part of her “team,” and they got part of the credit and eased, ever so smoothly, into her light.

I’ve known people who will pretend to be your friend in order to bask in the sunshine of a leader. People who work to get themselves into positions of leadership often find they attract “hangers on” who pretend to be their friends. Instead of actually being there for the leader, however, pretend friends are only there for the fame and glory that often comes with the leadership spotlight. Then, when rough times come around, pretend friends usually disappear. And what’s even worse, if the leader becomes challenged for some reason or other, or if problems occur in the organization that call for the leader being put up to public scrutiny, pretend friends usually will scatter, not unlike cockroaches when a light is turned on. Either they will be nowhere to be found, or they won’t stand in support of the leader they pretended to support in order to stand in his or her light.
Foul Friendship Stinks ...

A most “foul” reason for pretend/fake friendship is when someone does it to get close to another person, in order to destroy that person. I hate that it’s true, but I know it is true, because I’ve seen it happen, in and out of the workplace. Sometimes, pretend friendship of this type will have its origins in jealousy, envy, or just plain old spite—someone pretending to be a friend so they can get close enough to someone else to wreak havoc or destroy them, personally or professionally.

Remember the saying “keep your friends close, and your enemies closer?” Well, you can bet enemies know this saying too, and they will sometimes work as hard as is needed to squirm their way into a “friendship” position, in order to cause harm. Remember, most are expected to be smart enough to keep known or professed enemies away, so that means the best way for a “secret enemy” to get close is by pretending to be your friend. When the end goal is destroy someone, then the best way to learn about someone—their desires, goals, and objectives, is to get close. Then, they can put road blocks in your way to achieving your goals, without you even knowing or suspecting anything at all.

By getting close to you, pretend friends can find out things about you that you would never tell anyone but someone you think of as a friend. Then, once the pretend friend gains all the information they need, they can work against you—and even get ten steps ahead of you in doing so. Remember, you’re considering this person to be your friend, so they’re comfortable knowing they’re among the last persons you would ever suspect of doing any to harm you, or doing something that might allow someone else to harm you.

Why someone pretend to be your friends?
Why we need friends?
