Caffeine consumption affects blood donations by young adults  Taipei, Oct. 1 (CNA)

Blood donations by young adults have decreased by nearly 40 percent in a decade, mainly because of a lifestyle change and their habitual consumption of caffeine beverages, according to the Taiwan Blood Services Foundation on Sunday.

The foundation held an event to promote public health and awareness of blood donations to help other people.

Hou Sheng-mou (侯勝茂), the foundation's director, said in a speech Taiwan currently has the highest rate of blood donations in the world but aging population and low fertility rates have affected donations.

In 2014, 17- to 20-year-olds that donated blood numbered 185,982, which was whopping 39 percent drop from 303,595 people in the same age group that donated blood in 2005, according to foundations statistics.

Li Lei (黎蕾), the foundation's public relations head, said a decade ago, that age group made up 20 percent of blood donors but now the figure has fallen to 10 percent.

Coffee and beverages that contain caffeine affects the body's absorption of iron, hence decreasing hemoglobin in blood. Li suspected that low hemoglobin level in young people's blood is the cause for approximately 14 percent of donors having their blood rejected.

To be accepted, male donors need to have 13 grams of hemoglobin per deciliter (130g per liter) and female, 12g per deciliter (120g per liter).

In order to sustain a stable source of blood, the foundation has started a program since June 2015 for 17-20-year-olds to donate blood 10 times within two years. Up until Aug. 2017, only 338 persons have completed the program.

Liu Hsin-ping (劉欣萍), a 22-year-old student studying medical science at Taipei Medical University, has donated a total of 250 blood units, the top female donor in the program.

One unit of blood is roughly 525 milliliters.

Liu said she takes blood donation as part of her class schedule and has done a lot to look after her own health, to ensure she will have healthy blood to donate.

Lu Yi-hua (呂逸華), 20, started donating blood when Lu's grandfather was a dialysis patient; though he passed away last year, Lu still believes that through donating blood the grandpa-grandchild bond can be kept and the spirit of love continued.

The Complete Guide to Building Your Personal Brand
Written by Neil Patel & Aaron Agius

What is branding?

My parents like to tell a story from my childhood. When I was a toddler they would put me in the backseat of the car in child’s car seat when they would take me somewhere like to the store or to a friend’s house. When we would drive down the highway, I would see golden arches through the car window and yell, “Donald’s!”

Now, I was only two or three years old at the time. I wasn’t old enough to read. I could barely see high enough to see through the car window. But when I saw those arches it meant something to me.

My parents would sometimes take me to McDonald’s for a Happy Meal. I would associate the burger and fries with the golden arches.

That is branding.

A brand is anything—a symbol, design, name, sound, reputation, emotion, employees, tone, and much more—that separates one thing from another. In the case of McDonald’s, the golden arches became part of the brand. Those arches separate their product from all other fast food restaurants and they’re a recognizable symbol even with kids.

Branding on a business-level is common, but today branding is becoming just as important on a personal level. After all, you might work for a business that works with other businesses, but it’s people working with people and that’s what makes business relationships valuable.

Why should you build your personal brand?

Building a recognizable personal brand opens professional opportunities.

Creating a vision for your future and implementing that vision can lead to:

    A better job
Better contacts and clients for your company
    Industry recognition

If you’re looking for a better job, you want your potential boss at your ideal company to associate your personal brand with something that she needs on her team.

If you’re looking to grow the sales for a company, you want potential clients to associate your personal brand with a feeling of trust and long-term success and satisfaction.

This guide will take your through all the steps you need to take to create a your unique personal brand. In today’s job market and entrepreneurial landscape, there is no room for being another face in the crowd. You have to separate yourself from the competition. You have to be more appealing to your target audience and you can achieve it by creating a recognizable personal brand.

Ways to Spend One's Holidays Without Getting Bored    wikihow

Step out into the fresh air.

Simple outdoor pleasures are highly underrated. Not only is a quick trip out of the house invigorating and mood-lifting, but also a great opportunity for exercise. If you have been thinking of reducing those bulges, then go out and jog, walk or do any outdoor physical activity you enjoy.

Do something you have never done before.

If you have been thinking of doing something and never have the time to do it, then do it. Do not waste your time sitting in front of the TV and watching reruns over and over when you could be broadening your horizons with a brand-new experience. Below are just a few ideas:
Trying a new kind of food
Checking out a new club or hang-out spot
        Playing a new sport
Exploring a new area of wilderness.

Do something sporty. You can ride your bike, walk, play your favorite sport or even try a new one. Any of these sorts of activities are a good way to get healthy.

Spending time with others

Spend time with your friends. If you can't think of things to do, one of your friends probably can. When all else fails, simply try going for picnics or hanging out at a shopping mall with your friends. A sleepover is another great idea.

Spend time with loved ones. The holidays are a great opportunity to have rare, cherished conversations with family members you haven't seen for a long time. For instance, you might want to visit your grandparents and have a quality talk with them. You might be surprised how funny and insightful some of your very own relatives have become without your noticing.

    Get to know more people.
If there's no one around that you'd like to spend time with, don't forget that you always
have the option of making new friends. You might choose to do this at a social hang-out spot like a club, or, alternatively, at an event like a concert. Don't be afraid to approach and talk to people you meet - new friendships have to start somewhere!
You'll never make new friends from inside your home, so get out there! Getting out of the house is the most crucial, pivotal step in turning a boring holiday into a fun, productive one.

    Throw a party.
Having a party is a great way to have fun. You can invite your friends and have a fiesta themed on the weather. If it's sunny, have it beach themed. If it's cold, you and your friends can stay inside and have a nice cup of cocoa.

5 Foods That Will Put You In A Rotten Mood   prevention

1. Refined carbohydrates
In recent years, simple carbs have been vilified for their fat-promoting, nutrient-lacking qualities. Recently, researchers at Columbia University decided to see if having refined carbohydrates in your diet can make you depressed. Well, dust off the Paleo cookbook, because the answer is yes: Using data from the Women's Health Initiative—which is tracking more than 70,000 women—the researchers found that the higher a woman's blood sugar rose after eating sugar and refined grains, the higher her risk of depression.

2. Sugar
Considering the research on refined carbs, it's easy to see how sugar would also contribute to a higher risk of depression. Sure enough, multiple studies suggest a link. A diet high in sugar can raise levels of inflammation throughout the body and brain—and now research is tying inflammation to higher incidences of depression. One study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that brain inflammation was 30% higher in clinically depressed patients; another study published in the same journal found that patients with mild inflammation who took medication used to treat autoimmune or inflammatory diseases saw decreases in their depression symptoms.

3. Artificial sweeteners
So, sugar is bad. The fake stuff with fewer calories must be better, right? Not so much, says Edison, particularly if you already have depression. In one study, researchers at the University of Northwestern Ohio looked at the effect of aspartame (an artificial sweetener) on people with a history of depression and found that it significantly worsened symptoms. In fact, those symptoms got so bad that the study had to be stopped—some study participants actually developed suicidal thoughts.

4. Trans fats
We've all read the news that consuming olive oil can lower the risk of a number of health conditions, including heart disease and depression. What you may not realize, however, is that consuming artery-clogging trans fats can increase your risk of depression by as much as 48%, according to a study published in PLOS ONE.

5. Processed foods
It's no surprise that a food group that includes all of the bad guys listed above is one that'll put a damper on your mood. While studies of diet and depression often focus on specific foods, research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry looked at more than 3,000 people and found that those who ate the most processed food faced increased risk of depression, while those who ate the most whole foods had much lower odds.

National depression Screening Day

For more than two decades, Screening for Mental Health has developed programs to educate, raise awareness, and screen individuals for common behavioral and mental health disorders and suicide. We envision a world where mental health is viewed and treated with the same gravity as physical health, and the public’s participation in National Depression Screening Day helps make that vision a reality.

National Depression Screening Day, held annually on the Thursday of the first full week in October, is an education and screening event conducted by hospitals, clinics, colleges, and community groups nationwide. Much like the medical community screens for diabetes and high blood pressure, we wanted to offer large-scale mood disorder screenings for the public. The program provides free, anonymous screenings for depression, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as referral to treatment resources. Screenings are held both online and in-person and thousands of people participate each year.

How to Learn to Let Go of Things    wiki

Letting go of past hurts and injustices can be difficult. People often want some sort of closure or revenge for having been hurt. Unfortunately, holding on to this kind of pain only makes things worse on you. To move on with your life, you have to let go of the past. Try to express your pain, forgive, and move on with your life.
    1
Connect with another person. Go to social gatherings and spend time with friends or make new ones. Allowing yourself to have genuine connections with other people will start giving you positive experiences to talk about and relate to. These experiences can start shifting a negative mindset to a more optimistic one.

    2
Find a creative outlet. Create works of art to help your brain integrate emotions and thoughts. By creating something, you form new neural pathways in your brain and utilize your entire brain during the process. Aside from being a great way to pour your focus into something positive, creating a work of art can be healing.
This does not have to be a “traditional” kind of art. You might choose to paint a picture, but you can create art in many other ways, too. For example, you could build a birdhouse as a creative project, or use online coloring apps or puzzles.

    3
Join a support group. Support groups will allow you to connect directly with people who are struggling with the same pains. These groups will allow you to share your story and encourage others with similar stories. You will also be held accountable for taking steps to heal yourself since you will be talking about it at each meeting.

 4
Take time to remember the person. Whether the person is an ex, a friend, or a relative you need to take some time to remember your relationship. Remember the good parts as well as the bad parts. Make an effort to see the person as a whole and look past the one incident that has hurt you. Doing so will help you empathize with the person and forgive them.
For example, if your friend said something that hurt you, acknowledge that the same friend has said things that made you happy before, too. You don’t have remain friends, but you will retain a level of respect for them as a person. Assess if only one or two things have been said, or if there has been a repetitive pattern over time.

    5
Move on with your life. Let go of the things or people that have hurt you in the past. Holding onto this hurt only hurts you, not the person. This hurt can also be carried over to new relationships, friendships, and even careers. Learn a lesson from this pain, but forgive the person and move on, and remember that forgiving does not mean that you return to having the same degree of connection or intimacy. It has more to do with freeing yourself up.
Forgive an old partner for hurting you in a relationship.
Forgive a friend that did something wrong.
Forgive your family members for things that happened in your childhood.

Why you need to know Former members of the massive religious group are speaking out about high fees, harassment, and the leader's spurious claims. Listen powerd by Cyberon Followers of a self-proclaimed Buddhist guru in Taiwan are handing over tens of millions of dollars in membership fees and donations to his organization each year, former members of the sect have told The News Lens. Master Miaochan (妙禪師父), founder of Rulaizong (如來宗), is netting yearly membership proceeds of NT$72 million (US$2.4 million), coupled with monthly donations of as much as NT$86 million (US$2.8 million), the former members say. The organization, which claims to practice Zen Buddhism, was founded by Miaochan in 2004 and is understood to have about 80,000 followers across Taiwan. Followers of Miaochan credit anything good that happens in their lives — from job promotions to finding love — to the protection and blessing of their master. They claim the leader’s healing powers include curing people who have suffered strokes and those diagnosed with early-stage cancer. Members pay NT$1,000 to NT$2,000 (US$33 to US$66) in monthly fees to the organization. The leader claims the contributions will help him bring salvation to his believers and the donations are collected at their 24 large-scale prayer sessions held each month. It is at these prayer sessions where Miaochan makes appearances, and members are encouraged to attend at least one session every month. A local bank, Yuanta Bank, offers members the “Rulai Card,” which automatically deducts NT$2,000 from cardholders' accounts as donations to the group every month. “Josh,” a former member who now works to convert people out of Rulaizong, believes that at least 800,000 people have participated in introductory sessions and paid the base member fee of NT$300. “From that fee alone, Miaochan has made at least NT$24 million over the past 13 years,” he told TNL. A shady record Every week, up to 5,000 people wearing the iconic purple T-shirts gather at Tianmu Sports Park in Taipei just to get a glimpse of their spiritual leader, who claims to be a “living Buddha” on par with Jesus Christ, the Prophet Muhammad and Siddhartha Gautama. Miaochans real name is Liu Jin-lung (劉錦隆). According to the Rulaizong website, he became a Buddha in 1998 and established Rulaizong to spread his views. Rulaizong claims it now has 110,000 members, although John, a source close to Miaochan, says this does not account for the 30,000 people who have left the organization. Prior to founding his own organization, Miaochan was a high-ranking disciple under a different Zen Buddhism teacher, Master Miaotian (妙天). According to blog posts written by his former classmates, he left after being accused of overcharging people who were buying cubicles for cremation urns from Miaotian’s organization. He was not charged but his reputation was damaged, they say. While Rulaizong claims to accept anyone who is interested in joining, former members told TNL that the organization does not welcome Miaotian followers. “Chen,” a former teacher at Rulaizong — the organization is understood to have 30 paid head teachers, and over 80 volunteer teachers — was a member for five years and had access to the Tainan prayer center’s monthly meetings.
