Negative Effects Of a Sedentary Lifestyle   menshealth.com

Feeling down? Blame your chair: After surveying more than 3,300 government employees, Australian researchers found that men who sat for more than 6 hours a day at work were 90 percent more likely to feel moderate psychological distress—like feeling nervous, restless, hopeless, or even tired—than men who sat for less than 3 hours a day.

What’s more, other types of sedentary behavior—like watching TV or playing electronic games—can increase your risk for anxiety, according to a recent meta-analysis of nine studies published in BMC Public Health. That might be because if you’re spending your time on those pastimes, you’re probably not fitting in enough physical activity, the researchers say. (Here are 7 things that destroy your mood.)

And that’s important, since exercise has mood-boosting benefits. When you work up a sweat, your body produces feel-good hormones called endorphins, according to the Mayo Clinic. What’s more, recent research indicates that cardio can boost your mood just as effectively as prescribed antidepressants.

cancer risk grows

A German meta-analysis of 43 different studies including more than 4 million people found that sedentary behavior significantly increases your risk for several types of cancer.

People who logged the most sitting time experienced a 24 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer, a 32 percent higher risk of endometrial cancer, and a 21 percent higher risk of lung cancer.

Plus, the risks about doubled for people who usually spent their butt time parked in front of the TV, possibly because you tend to nosh on sweetened beverages and junk foods when you’re glued to the screen, the researchers say.

And that paves the way for obesity. Large studies have consistently shown that higher levels of body fat can spike your cancer risk. That’s because chronic local inflammation can attack your body’s cells, leading to cancer-causing DNA damage over time, according to the National Cancer Institute. Plus, a surplus of fat cells eventually produce hormones that lead to cell proliferation, a process that causes your cells to grow and divide rapidly. (Here are 10 things you can do to prevent cancer.)

Your brain health suffers when you lounge for too long: Older adults who are sedentary may be just as likely to develop dementia as people who are genetically predisposed to the condition, new research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found.

In a study of more than 1,600 adults 65 and older, the researchers found that people with a gene strongly associated with dementia were nearly twice as likely to develop it as people without the gene. But when they looked at people who didn’t exercise regularly, they found that their odds of developing dementia were similar.

How Impulsive Are You?    | Psychology Today

Impulsivity is a basic, yet fascinating concept in psychology. It’s associated with many traits, ranging from sensation-seeking to neuroticism, and it affects a number of behaviors of interest to psychologists, from over-eating to under-saving. Many important choices you've made may have been affected by your level of impulsivity.

Psychologist Ernest Barratt (link is external) has developed a popular measure of impulsivity that differentiates between planning impulsivity (being more interested in the present than the future); attentional impulsivity (being restless in lectures or having extraneous thoughts when thinking); and motor impulsivity (doing things without thinking).

Impulse buying—such as all those unnecessary purchases people made to take advantage of Black Friday discounts—is captured mainly by the latter dimension. People who tend to make impulse purchases may or may not suffer from more general impulsivity traits. Scott Dickman (link is external) devised a widely-used instrument to measure dysfunctional impulsivity, provided below for you to complete.

For each of the following statements, please indicate whether it is generally TRUE or FALSE.

I will often say whatever comes into my head without thinking first.
I enjoy working out problems slowly and carefully.
I frequently make appointments without thinking about whether I will be able to keep them.
I frequently buy things without thinking about whether or not I can really afford them.
I often make up my mind without taking the time to consider the situation from all angles.
Often, I don't spend enough time thinking over a situation before I act.
I often get into trouble because I don't think before I act.
Many times the plans I make don't work out because I haven't gone over them carefully enough in advance.
I rarely get involved in projects without first considering the potential problems.
Before making any important decision, I carefully weigh the pros and cons.
I am good at careful reasoning.
I often say and do things without considering the consequences.
Q:
Do you doing things without thinking?
Do you think twice before you make an important decision?
Are you an Impulsive buyer?
Cons of an impulsive buyer?
How can you control your emotions?
Do you upset easily?

Why Group Exercise Is So Good For Your Health     health.com

Exercise is great for mental health; Research has shown that it can lower stress, improve mood and even decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. But new research finds that a group exercise class may be even better for your mental wellbeing than a solo sweat session.

A small study published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association found that people who took group exercise classes reported less stress and more physical, emotional and mental health benefits than those who exercised alone or did not hit the gym at all, suggesting that a social atmosphere may compound the already numerous benefits of physical activity.

At the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, 69 people in their first or second year of medical school—typically a very stressful time—were recruited for the study. One group of students did at least one 30-minute core training class together each week; another exercised alone or with one or two other people at least twice a week; and a third didn't engage in any physical activity beyond walking or biking for transportation. Students were allowed to choose their own group.

The students took surveys about their stress levels every four weeks and periodically filled out additional surveys about their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. After 12 weeks, the researchers determined that those taking the group core training class were seeing the best results.

The study has some limitations. It's possible that people who chose the core training group already knew they liked group exercise, and thus saw benefits. But the research suggests that the virtues of fitness classes go far beyond working up a sweat. In addition to a community vibe, the researchers note that the music and choreography used in group classes may boost mood.

All the more reason to hit that barre exercise class after work.

It's World Kindness Day! Introduced in 1998, it is a celebration of kindness in all its forms. How can you contribute? "Make a vegetable patch and grow your own produce," says the Kindness Day UK website. "Say good morning to everyone on your way into work, bring in treats for your colleagues, or leave a pile of pennies by a fountain for passers by to make a wish."

Kindness can sometimes feel lacking in Britain, particularly in the capital, and no doubt many reading the above suggestions will be doing so with smirking cynicism. But the UK is actually one of the world's most generous countries, according to Charities Aid Foundation's 2017 World Giving Index.
Billed as "the world's leading study of generosity", the index rates 140 countries in three categories: helping a stranger, donating money, and volunteering time. The UK's overall rating of 50 is good enough for 11th place.
"The high scores are likely to be a result of Theravada Buddhism practiced by a large proportion of the population in Myanmar, whereby followers donate to support those living a monastic lifestyle – a practice known as Sangha Dana," the report states.

Ireland made the top 10, as did New Zealand, the US and Canada, but scores fell in every Western country compared with 2016. An average of 1,000 people were questioned in each country to produce the report.

Qualities of a Good Man
Michelle Keldgord  herinterest.com

1. He’s Faithful

This may seem obvious (no one wants to be in a relationship with a cheater, right?). But sometimes we get so caught up in a dazzling smile and pretty words that we completely ignore the fact that he’s got a bad history. If the man you’re into is a known cheater or tends to be overly flirty with every girl he sees, he might not be the faithful man for your committed relationship you dream about. It’s best to pass on this eye candy flirt-a-holic and find someone a little more stable.

2. He’s Open and Honest

Honesty is one of the most important parts of a relationship, and so is being open about anything and everything. You want a man who is willing to be honest about when he’s feeling down or when he’s at fault, and you also want a man who can be open about discussing potential problems in the relationship. With communication being the foundation of a committed, strong relationship, this is absolutely important. That’s not to say some guys aren’t shy and require a little extra work- but if he is completely against being open and honest with you, he’s not a keeper.

3. He’s Hard Working

Finding a hard working man is crucial. Just think about it: in the future, when the two of you are happily married and living together, do you want to be struggling with bills because your man refuses to work? Or would you rather have the guy who goes above and beyond to get that promotion or bonus, even the man who will put everything he’s got just for a few extra cents. That says a ton about his character and the type of man he is. If he goes beyond for his work, no matter if he’s a construction worker or a lawyer, just imagine what he would do for the woman he loves.

4. He Has a Good Personality

This goes without saying, right? You don’t want to be in a relationship with someone who is boring, unintelligent, or can’t laugh at even the funniest jokes. So what makes up a good personality? For each of us, we might be looking for something different. But the basics are these:

He has a good sense of humor and can laugh when the moment is appropriate.
He can hold a conversation with you.
He is nice and friendly to those around him.
He compliments you in a respectful and polite way (not raunchy or disrespectful).

5. Believes in Family

At the end of the day, the majority of us are seeking marriage and a family. If the guy you’re after does not want to ever get married or have children (unless that’s what you want, too), it’s best to keep moving. Find the man who believes in family, loves his family, and wants to have a family and take care of them in the future.

Reasons Why Risk-Taking Leads To Success  The Huffington Post By  Julie Zeilinger
1. Great, otherwise unforeseen opportunities often come from risk-taking.
We tend to view risk-taking negatively, often regarding it as dangerous and even unwise. But while some risks certainly don't pay off, it's important to remember that some do. Reframing risk as an opportunity to succeed rather than a path to failure is something Sandra Peterson, CEO of the $10 billion business Bayer CropScience, knows well. She told Forbes in 2011:
Most women I know who have been successful in business, it’s because they’ve been willing to take on the risky challenge that other people would say, "Oh, I’m not sure I want to do that." If you look at my career, I’ve taken on a lot of risky roles. They were risky to some people but to me it was, "Wow, this is this great opportunity and it’s allowing me to learn new things and take on a bigger role and a bigger organization." But some people would view that as, "Are you crazy?
2. Taking risks shows confidence and helps you stand out.
Taking a risk is also a great opportunity to stand out and to present yourself as a leader, not a follower satisfied with the status quo. Tamara Abdel-Jaber, who is the CEO of the tech company Palma and was named one of the 100 Most Powerful Arab Women in Arabian Business Magazine in 2011, told Women 2.0:
The way I see it, many people in ... [the Middle East] don’t have many resources and knowledge. In order to stand out, expend a little extra effort ... I am passionate about knowledge and pursued that from an early age by working hard in school and have continued to do so throughout my life. My knowledge helps me to be confident, and I like taking risks.
3. Success won't fall in your lap -- you have to pursue it.
But beyond being personally or professionally beneficial, taking risks may be a necessary step in actively pursuing success. When asked how she became the first female CEO of a television network in a Huffington Post interview, Kay Koplovitz responded:
You really have to put one foot in front of the other and start on your journey. You have to be comfortable that you don't know exactly how you are going to get to the results that you want to see. There is going to be experimentation along the way. And you have to be comfortable that you can think your way through and actually execute your way through to the desired outcome.
4. Embracing risk-taking helps you overcome a fear of failure.
Arianna Huffington has long identified the fear of failure as a major roadblock to success. She told Business Insider last year:
We women are a little more risk-averse because whenever you launch something there’s a big chance it’s not going to work. And we have a bigger problem with failure what I call the obnoxious roommate living in our head that constantly puts us down, doesn’t want us to fail because we become identified with our successes and failures.
Questions:
Reasons why risk-taking leads to success?
Why taking risk, challenge & adventure important?
Are you willing to take on the risky challenge?
What are the ways to handle risk?
How to become stronger emotionally?
How to find life-changing opportunity?
How to pursue success?

What are New Year's Resolutions?
    Written By: Michael Pollick

There is an old saying that a new broom sweeps clean. The first day of a new year also seems like an ideal time to sweep away one's past and start fresh. Many people form New Year's resolutions as part of their New Year's Day holiday ritual. These resolutions are usually vows or promises made on 1 January that address a number of goals for personal improvement. They often run the gamut from health issues to professional development to social improvements.

One of the most common New Year's resolutions is a vow to lose weight. Gyms and fitness centers across the world anticipate a surge in membership during the months of January and February, as millions of people make honest efforts to honor their pledges. Along with weight loss and body resculpting, many people also vow to improve their eating habits. Sales of whole or health foods tend to spike during the first few months of the year as diet trends shift. Many gym and health food store owners realize, however, that some resolutions may not survive until June.

Other New Year's resolutions address professional or financial goals. Some people vow to search for a better job or improve the conditions of the one they already have. Many people make resolutions to be more diligent about their personal bookkeeping, or to find additional sources of income during the upcoming year. Some may resolve to form a budget and live within their means instead of adding more debt.

People also set goals around social or spiritual improvements. Many people resolve to treat their spouses with more respect, or to be more sociable around others. Some promise to become more involved in their religious expressions or to become more tolerant of others. Those involving personal or spiritual growth can often be shared with spouses or other family members as a way to boost each other's level of commitment.

Some New Year's resolutions concern the elimination or acknowledgment of bad personal habits. Many people vow to quit smoking cigarettes or consuming alcohol in the new year. Others may attempt to control their tempers or curb their use of foul language. Making resolutions is a way for people to acknowledge some negative aspects of their lives and make a concrete promise to address those issues during the upcoming year.

Reasons Why You'll Benefit to Join a Gym Right Now   aol.com

Get Healthy

A gym encourages you to do a balanced program that includes both aerobic and strength training exercises. These promote heart health and weight loss, help prevent osteoporosis and improve muscle strength, balance and flexibility. If weight loss is a primary goal, consider the mantra of a friend who tells me "nothing tastes as good as getting in shape feels."

 Get Stress Relief

According to the Mayo Clinic, virtually any form of exercise can act as a stress reliever -- whether you're a serious athlete or an out of shape wannabe. Physical activity boosts the brain's production of endorphins, which simply makes us feel better physically and have a brighter emotional outlook. Exercise reduces tensions in both the body and the mind, which can improve your mood and the quality of your sleep. For many people, the gym becomes a bit of sanctuary where you can turn off the phone and forget all of the troubles at work or in your personal life.

 Learn From the Pros

Many gyms now have professional trainers on staff -- often people with college degrees in sports science or other related fields, along with personal training certificates. They are trained to design exercise programs that fit your individual needs in a fun and safe way, showing you proper exercise techniques so that you don't hurt yourself and that you get the most out of each exercise routine.

 Sweat Together

Many people find exercise classes to be the most efficient and fun way to get a full body workout. You can do everything from Aqua Arthritis (where there's a pool) to Zumba, and from kickboxing to yoga. There's usually a very energetic leader to help provide you with some extra energy and motivation. Many people do have to get over the hump initially of being the class newbie, where it seems like you're the only one who doesn't know the right steps or positions, or the only man in a class of a dozen women. (Granted, that's not necessarily a problem for all men) Don't worry though. They are concentrating on their own form and not watching yours.

用聲音創造好印象
How to use your voice to make a good impression    BY WILMA DEN HARTIGH

How to Talk, Act and Dress Your Way to Success, says good communication is a powerful sales tool and one of the most important factors that can influence business success.
Rissen-Harrisberg advises that people stay away from fake accents and an unnatural or forceful voice. "Use your voice pitch, which is how high or low the frequency of your voice is when you speak, to come across as sincere and confident", she says.
"The more serious you are, the more slowly you need to speak"
She adds that people who speak with a rich, resonant voice in the lower frequencies, are generally perceived to be more credible and sincere.
What can I do right now to improve my voice?
1. Practice breathing consciously. This means to breathe deeply. In this way your voice will come like a balloon from the stomach and will be projected out in a resounding way.
2. What if I mumble all the time? Open your mouth and project your voice. What often stops the sound is your teeth and lips. Practice opening your mouth by saying the word ‘ouch’.
3. Slow down. Speaking too quickly makes it difficult for other people to grasp what you are saying. Giving your speech meaning comes from using the correct pace. The more serious you are, the more slowly you need to speak (but within reason). This gives the listener time to pick up everything you say and understand that it is important.
4. Pause. While talking you would naturally pause to breathe. But pausing is also a powerful tool that adds colour and variety to speech. It gives listeners time to think about what you have just said and creates a bit of suspense.
5. Let down your barriers. Vulnerability and authenticity are two of the most captivating characteristics in a public speaker.
6. Don't over prepare. Know what you will be talking about, but over preparation can create separation from your audience. Sometimes the most memorable presentation is one where people can sense that you are present and say what comes to you in the moment.
7. Seek professional help. Voice training can help you develop a more flexible vocal tone using proper breathing techniques and vocal exercises to achieve a more flexible and varied tone.

Ways to Live a More Meaningful Life      David Loker   lifehack

Know What’s Important
Know what’s important for you. Write down your top 5 things that you believe are the essence of how you want to live life. This can include things like “family time,” or “sing every day.” It could also include more complex ideas, like “honesty” and “simplicity.”

Discover Your Life’s Purpose
If you had to give yourself a reason to live, what would it be? What would you stand for? What principles do you hold highest? Is your life’s purpose to help others? Is it to inspire others with great works of art, or you words? Finding your life’s purpose is a daunting task, and when I first heard the idea, I had no idea where to start. For methods on discovering your life’s purpose, I recommend Steve Pavlina’s blog entries on the subject. I also recommend reading the article What Makes Life Worth Living.

Be Self-Aware
Be aware of yourself and your actions. Remain mindful of what you do at all times, and make sure you are living life according to your principles, your life’s purpose, and what you are passionate about. Review your actions each day, taking stock of those that strayed from your path. Work towards correcting any incidents in the future. Meditation is a great tool for accomplishing this task. It helps us increase our self-awareness throughout the day.

Focus
Rather than chasing 3 or 4 goals and making very little progress on them, place all of your energy on one thing. Focus. Not only will you alleviate some of the stress associated with trying to juggle so many tasks, you will be much more successful. Try and align your goal with something you are passionate about, so that there will be an intrinsic drive to work hard and do well.

People More Than Things
Often, we are faced with wanting to buy material goods. I recommend you consider carefully what you purchase, and think more about spending your money on experiences with friends and family. Not only will this give deeper meaning to your life by focusing on your relationships rather than material wealth, but you will be a happier person as a result.

Find a Way to Give Back
Do something that both honors your beliefs and passions, while giving something back to the world. By giving something back, we inevitably find purpose in the act. By cultivating more of these activities, you will find your life has more meaning and purpose behind it.

Set Daily Goals
In the morning, before you start your day, create a list of 3 goals that you find fulfilling and meaningful. Make sure they adhere to your set of principles and beliefs. Tackle the hardest things first! Don’t make this list too long. By placing too many things on the list, you’ll feel the urge to multi-task, which is not good, or you’ll feel overwhelmed, which isn’t good either. By trying to do less, you’ll end up doing more.
Q:
How to live a more meaningful life?
Do you know that what’s important to you?
Sharing your top 3 things that you believe are the essence of how you want to live life?
How to discover your life’s purpose?
How to be focus?
What are your opinion about this saying “life by focusing on your relationships rather than material wealth”?
How to find a way to give back?
