Police are looking for a man in his 60s who appeared in footage from the gender-neutral toilet
A Starbucks outlet in Taipei.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - A woman visiting a Starbucks outlet in Taipei City’s Neihu District found a hidden camera inside a toilet which might have taken 7,000 pictures of more than a hundred women, reports said Saturday.

Going through surveillance cameras at the coffee shop, police had begun to focus their investigation on a man in his sixties, the Apple Daily reported.

A woman discovered the camera when she became aware of a flash while she was inside a toilet, the report said. She looked around and found a working miniature camera.

On its memory card, police saw that more than 7,000 pictures had been taken of at least 100 women, but also of the culprit, which helped them compare with the footage from the store’s surveillance system, the Apple Daily reported.

The fact that the restrooms were gender-neutral had made the job easier for the suspect, police said, adding that they were confident they could bring him in for questioning within days.

The All-or-Nothing Marriage

ARE marriages today better or worse than they used to be?

This vexing question is usually answered in one of two ways. According to the marital decline camp, marriage has weakened: Higher divorce rates reflect a lack of commitment and a decline of moral character that have harmed adults, children and society in general. But according to the marital resilience camp, though marriage has experienced disruptive changes like higher divorce rates, such developments are a sign that the institution has evolved to better respect individual autonomy, particularly for women. The true harm, by these lights, would have been for marriage to remain as confining as it was half a century ago.

As a psychological researcher who studies human relationships, I would like to offer a third view. Over the past year I immersed myself in the scholarly literature on marriage: not just the psychological studies but also work from sociologists, economists and historians. Perhaps the most striking thing I learned is that the answer to whether today’s marriages are better or worse is “both”: The average marriage today is weaker than the average marriage of yore, in terms of both satisfaction and divorce rate, but the best marriages today are much stronger, in terms of both satisfaction and personal well-being, than the best marriages of yore.

Consider, for example, that while the divorce rate has settled since the early 1980s at around 45 percent, even those marriages that have remained intact have generally become less satisfying. At the same time, consider the findings of a recent analysis, led by the University of Missouri researcher Christine M. Proulx, of 14 longitudinal studies between 1979 and 2002 that concerned marital quality and personal well-being. In addition to showing that marital quality uniformly predicts better personal well-being (unsurprisingly, happier marriages make happier people), the analysis revealed that this effect has become much stronger over time. The gap between the benefits of good and mediocre marriages has increased.

Hospital Blaze in Taiwan Kills 9 and Injures Dozen

NEW TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan — An early morning fire raged through a hospital floor filled with elderly patients Monday morning in Taiwan’s largest city, killing at least nine people and injuring two dozen more.

The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. in a room for patients with chronic or long-term illnesses at the government-run Taipei Hospital in New Taipei City. Within an hour, firefighters had extinguished the blaze. But nine people died, all of whom were patients.

Keeping Safe in Your House During a Fire   wiki

React as soon as you hear your smoke alarm go off. Smoke from a fire will put you in deeper sleep. If you hear your smoke detector or alarm going off and see fire, try to exit your home as safely as possible. Do not try to grab your phone, valuables, or your other important possessions. Your only concern is to get out of there as fast as possible. Nothing else is as important as this. You should be getting yourself and your family members out safely. If it's nighttime, yell loudly to get everyone up. You may only have a few seconds to escape safely, so ignore all secondary concerns that have nothing to do with staying alive. If you have escaped from a home fire, remember once you get out stay out and dial Triple Zero (000) or 911, depending on where you live.

    Protect yourself from smoke inhalation.

Get low to the floor and crouch or crawl on your hands and knees to evade the smoke. Though you may think that running is faster, encourage your family members to crouch or crawl, too. Smoke inhalation causes people to become disoriented and can even render a person unconscious. Knowing this, you should cover your nose and mouth if you have to walk by or through a heavily smoke-filled room.

Escape from a second story window if you can.

If you have a two-story house, you should have an escape ladder that you can throw out in case a fire or other problem happens. If you really must get out of the window, look for a ledge and if there is a ledge, you can get yourself out onto the ledge facing the building.

Smile.

Another nonverbal tip is to simply smile! “This is so obvious that its importance is often forgotten,” Caleb Backe, Health and Wellness Expert, explains. “It can be hard to remember to smile while greeting others or talking to other people, especially if we’re tired or are having a bad day. Smiling is something that we need to consciously think about throughout the day, and eventually it will become engrained in us and a smile will come naturally to us making us warm and approachable.”

 Stay off your phone.

Dr. Sal Raichbach, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, says you should also stay off your phone if you want people to approach you. “People have a tendency to bring out their phones as soon as they have a minute alone. If you’re always on your phone, people will perceive that you are busy and unavailable to talk,” he explains. “To remain approachable, put your phone away and scan the room. You’ll likely find someone who is willing to strike up a conversation.”

Show interest in others.

For the most part, people enjoy being around people who make them feel good,” says Hunt Ethridge, a dating and relationship coach. Therefore, you should go out of your way to show interest in them! “Now, this isn’t to say that you should become a sycophant or be overly complementary,” he says. “But you can ask people about things that make them happy. For example: What was the best city you ever visited? What’s the best meal you’ve ever had? What is one of your favorite memories from childhood? When was the last time your boss praised you? What teacher in college inspired the most passion in you? There are two keys: 1) make sure the answer only has a positive answer and 2) make sure it’s specific enough that it has a positive memory attached to it.”

Stand out.

And a final piece of advice: stand out from the crowd. “One thing that works quite well to get people to initiate a conversation with me is to throw on a unique piece of attire—something attention-getting, but not over-the-top,” Patrick Mackie explains. “Successful examples include: 1) a bow-tie —they’re not so unique that you’re a spectacle as opposed to a professional, but they’re unique enough to give people an in, should they want to approach you, and 2) a uniquely-designed hat—I once wore my Sendero Covey Hat to an event geared toward a younger audience and had no less than 4-5 people comment on it.”

How to Be Social  wiki

    Make small talk.

As the saying goes, there’s nothing small about small talk. You may feel like you’re allergic to talking to people about the weather or the local sports team, but this is the way you can begin to develop a more serious bond and to get to know people on a deeper level. While you may want to jump right into a discussion of whether or not there’s a God or about your complicated relationship with your mother, you’ll need to be able to make more superficial conversation with people before you can get to a deeper level. Don’t think that you’re above small talk or that you have no time for it; instead, think of it as a way of moving towards truly getting to know people.

   Be interested, not interesting.

You may think that the best way to be social is to make people think that you’re an awesome person who they need to spend more time with. Well, this certainly couldn’t hurt, but the fact of the matter is, people are much more likely to want to socialize with people who are interested in them, instead of people who are just interesting in general. While you can certainly reveal information about yourself, one way to socialize more is to show a real interest in people by asking them questions and showing that you care about their lives.

    Embrace new people.

People who have trouble being social are usually afraid, distrustful, or just skeptical about new people. They may think that new people have nothing to offer them and that they are better off sticking to the familiar. Well, you should think that, to new people, you are certainly worth getting to know – and that you’re a new person to somebody. Instead of being skeptical of new people until they prove themselves to you, try to assume that most people have good intentions and give them the benefit of the doubt. If you approach new people as potential friends instead of potential enemies, you’ll be on your way to being much more social.

     Learn to read people.

Another way to be social when you talk to people is to learn to read them, even when they are saying the opposite of how they feel. You should become a master at decoding body language, and should be able to tell how a person is feeling just from how that person is standing or by the look on his face when he’s not talking. If someone is telling you that he’s doing fine, but you can see that his eyes are puffy or that his clothes look a bit disheveled, then you may find that he actually needs a helping hand.

Taiwanese Ghost Month | International Neighbors
By Yu-Ting

During the Ghost Festival, people pay tribute to ghosts. They prepare food and drink offerings to keep them safe from ghost harassment. Marriages, moving houses, business transactions and other important events are viewed as taboos during this month. It is believed that the ghosts would create obstacles and then make things go wrong. In many parts of Asia, Ghost Festival is a holiday full of taboos and restrictions instead of happiness.

What to avoid during the ghost month?

For the Taiwanese, the Ghost Month is an ominous time. Many activities are said to bring misfortune during this time, especially after dark. Among the taboos are weddings (or it won’t be a happy ending), swimming (or ghosts in the water may drown you), making big business decision, such as investment (or it fails in the end), and moving in to a new home (or ghosts will live with you), whistling (or it could attract ghosts to you), etc.

Over all, we avoid the word “ghost” and say “good brothers” instead to protect ourselves from evil demons. On the other hand, feasts are held, not only in families but at temples all over Taiwan, to feed and entertaining the wandering ghosts. People believe that if the ghosts and ghouls aren’t kept pleasant, they will do some eerie things to the living.

Don’t provoke the Ghost! The Funny experience from my poor friend, Jay

During the ghost month, we seldom go outside after dark. However, my neighbor, Jay, who did not believe in ghosts, always laughed at us, “How could you be so superstitious! We’re in the 21 century.” or “We’re educated people who have definitely never seen a ghost.” Therefore, he didn’t mind any taboo in Ghost month.

However, he changed his faith about ghost one evening during the ghost month. I still remember vividly. It was a rainy night, and he had to pick up his sister, Jane, who took the overnight train. Just on his way to train station, the rain was so heavy that he could barely see what was going on outside. Suddenly, he saw some white stuff move, as if it was floating in the air, and following him. At that moment, his car couldn’t move forward and all he could do was back up. He was so terrified that he pulled over the car then ran to home immediately. I have no idea how many miles he ran before knocking on my door. I cannot forget how frightened he was as if he had seen a ghost when he knocked the door to ask my brother for help. Well, I snickered behind the door and texted to my brother,”

Saving Face, Losing Face: Etiquette in Asia
By Greg Rodgers  tripsavvy

How to Save Face in Asia

Unless physical harm is imminent, there are very few good reasons to shout in Southeast Asia — particularly Thailand.

Shouting and arguing in public are strictly frowned upon. Causing a scene actually makes bystanders lose face through embarrassment suffered on your behalf! Even if you win whatever argument, you'll lose as a whole. Although frustrating, always stay patient and calm until both parties reach a resolution.

Even if you find yourself fully in the right, making a small compromise will allow the other party to save face — and that's a very good thing for future interaction.

Tip: In many Asian countries, a giggle or nervous laugh can indicate someone is uncomfortable. People will often giggle nervously when risking a loss of face. If you trigger too many giggles with statements or questions, it may be time to back down.
Negotiating Without Loss of Face

Understanding the concept of face not only builds better relationships, it can save you money.

When negotiating prices in Asia, keep in mind that a shopkeeper cannot risk a loss of face. Even though the vendor may want to make the sale, they will avoid a loss of face by refusing to meet your inflexible price.

Drive a hard bargain but always give in just a little on your final price. This allows the merchant to not feel as though they lost something. Don't worry: no matter what they claim, they'll never actually lose money on a sale. It's more about the feeling after the sale is completed.

One option for smoothing over some tough negotiating would be to buy some other small item from their shop for the listed price. Optionally, you could praise their business and promise to refer other travelers to them.
Simple Tips to Prevent Someone From Losing Face

Do what you can to avoid all potential embarrassment for others.
Avoid pointing out someone's mistakes openly in front of their peers.
Politely refuse a gift at first but always eventually relent and accept with both hands. Don't open it immediately unless the giver requests!
Don't make a big deal when giving someone a gift. It's better not to demand they open it right away.
If you give to beggars, do so discreetly.
Show extra respect by deferring to all elders and people of rank, title, or uniform.
When negotiating prices in Asia, be a little flexible on your final price.

Always allow your host to pay for dinner. You can offer a little resistance, but eventually allow them to pay. Don't offer to leave a tip!

South Korea fortune-telling will soon be a $3.7bn business

DESTINY is usually said to lurk in heavy drapes of purple velvet, in the wicked glint of a crystal ball, behind a veil of heady incense or in the tuck of a gold-chiffon turban. Your correspondent went in search of hers among a crush of Korean schoolgirls at the “Broken Heart Tarot Club” in booming Hongdae, a university district in Seoul. The café’s façade is an inviting jumble of pink neon signs and glowing graffiti. At the next table, a hip tarot reader spread a deck face-down for two girlfriends in oversized denim jackets, who took turns picking out cards and sipping on their lattes. He looked as cool as them, more rapper than rune-reader, in dark glasses with a chain around his neck.

Interrogating the decorated cards costs 3,000 won (about $2.75) a question. A tarot reader assesses the character of her clients first. Two flicks of her wrist, and a pair of Queens appears. “You chose the strongest set in the deck,” she says brightly. “Fame is within reach.” Will a move to a new country go smoothly? The Beggar. “The start will be hard, but you can succeed if you ask for help.” Will the Koreas go to war? Death and The Emperor show up, apparently the tarot incarnations of Kim Jong Un (here a scythe-wielding woman in blue veils) and Moon Jae-in, the leaders of North and South Korea. “Death plays tricks but the Emperor is wise,” the reader assures.

Broken Heart” is among dozens of fortune-telling businesses on the street, packed between cheap clothes and cosmetics shops. Business is brisk. Other stores offer the Korean arts of face-reading, palm-reading—one entices clients with a detailed mapping of Barack Obama’s raised hand at his presidential swearing-in—and saju. An ancient form of divination, saju analyses the cosmic energy at the hour, day, month and year of a person’s birth from Chinese astrological records and texts. A seer at “Broken Hearts” says she began to study saju two decades ago (she says she found it hard to trust other fortune-tellers), but took up tarot recently to keep up with the times. “The young like it. The cards are pretty, it’s cheap and it’s quick,” she says.

The otherworldly in South Korea will soon be a 4trn won ($3.7bn) business, predicts the Korea Economic Daily, a local newspaper. Paik Woon-san, head of the Association of Korean Prophets, estimates that there are over 300,000 fortune-tellers in the country, and 150,000 shamans, many of whom provide clairvoyance. Unusually in a country of evangelical Christians and devout Buddhists, it continues to thrive as anything from a bit of curious fun to a dependable guide for making everyday decisions.

Now fortune-telling apps for smartphones are beguiling city kids, taking the occult into the otherworldliness of cyberspace. Handasoft, a software developer, has launched 13 apps in the past five years.
