It's Good to be Rich - Advantages of Being Rich
Thomas C. Corley   richhabits

The pursuit of wealth is a noble goal. It does not make you evil, greedy or selfish. When you are rich you put yourself in a position of being able to do good by helping others in need.

In my twelve years of studying the rich I’ve identified some advantages that make it good to be rich:

The rich can afford to buy in bulk at places like Sam’s Club, Costco, BJ’s and other Warehouse Clubs which offer discounts for those who can afford to buy in bulk.
The rich can afford to take advantage of one day sales, special sales events, liquidation discounts, etc. They have the money to take advantage of these discounts.
The rich can afford the finest schools for their children, where their children can build relationships and networks with other wealthy students. The wealthy families of these students can open doors for your child that are closed to everyone else.
The rich can afford to go on vacations with their family to exotic places. Their children benefit by broadening their understanding of the world, its diverse cultures and gaining a better understanding of geography.
Because birds of a feather flock together, the rich surround themselves with other rich people. One of the benefits this affords is the ability to enjoy the toys of the rich: boats, planes, yachts, country clubs, golf clubs, vacation homes, etc.
Having rich friends means having access to unique opportunities to make more money such as being able to participate in little-known investment opportunities available only to the affluent.

The rich are able to remain healthier, longer. They have access to the best medical care, medical procedures to resolve obesity, personal trainers to help them stay fit and they can afford to buy expensive nutritional food.

The rich have more fun because they can afford to spend money on expensive entertainment such as concerts, sporting events (i.e. season tickets), Broadway plays, skiing, beachfront resorts, etc.

Join Clubs – Clubs can use their purchasing power to obtain discounts on things only the rich can do, such as frequent skiing, flying airplanes, boating, fishing excursions, gold outings, international travel, etc. Club members can also pool their limited resources in order to take advantage of Warehouse Club bulk sale discounts.

Goodwill Stores – You can find expensive brand clothing at goodwill stores. The clothing may require some tailoring but that’s a small price to pay for high quality clothing.

The Best Coffee Shops in Taipei
Ciaran McEneaney

In a country where drinking tea is a national pastime, visitors to Taipei would find it easy to assume that a good coffee shop would be hard to come by. But they couldn’t be more wrong. Taiwan is enjoying a passionate love affair with the coffee bean, and you can now buy a cup of coffee in any convenience store (there’s one on every corner). However, the real coffee lovers out there should try one of these coffee shops.

Coffee Sweet

These days it’s all about the Wi-Fi. If a coffee shop or bar doesn’t have it, then they might as well shut down. Well, that is unless you serve incredible coffee like Coffee Sweet does. There are only 25 seats in this intimate little space, tucked away down an alleyway, but that’s good because, with no Wi-Fi, customers tend to enjoy their coffee then be on their way.

Rufous Coffee

Rufous is a coffee shop with a rustic feel and a local crowd. It feels like the kind of place worth visiting every day. Featuring dark mahogany wood and comfortable seating for 35 people this place has it all. From incredible pour-overs to coffees with a scoop of ice cream, coffee addicts will want for nothing here.

Rufous roasts all of its beans in-house and they do so with expert care, and the result is wonderful coffee blends in a shop filled with the aroma of freshly roasted beans.

Set just a few steps from National Taiwan University, Picnic stands out in a sea of coffee shops all catering to the student masses living or attending classes in the neighborhood. It’s set up like a quaint little cottage and even has a menu to match. The coffees are of course fantastic but what makes this place so special are the home cooked scones.

Perfect for those cold winter afternoons (yes, Taiwan does actually get cold for a few months) Picnic is the perfect tonic to some other coffee shops that take themselves a little too seriously. Great coffee and scones in a warm and cozy setting, what more could you need?

Steps To Turn Strangers Into Connections
Stephanie Vozza  fastcompany

1. Look approachable

We’ve all seen people walking down a hall with their head down or sitting at a table engrossed with their phone. Body language speaks volumes, and they’re sending signals that they don’t want to be bothered. Instead, get interested in the people around you, says Robinett. “A smile shows that you’re open to a conversation,” she says.

2. Say hello

It sounds simple, but a quick “hello” will break the ice. Marriott Hotels has a “15-5 rule” for its employees. Whenever an employee comes within 15 feet of anyone in the hotel, they must acknowledge the guest with eye contact or a friendly nod. If the person comes within five feet, then the employee must smile and say hello. Robinett suggests that you take on the Marriott rule for yourself.

3. Assume the other person is shy

Seventy percent of people proclaim they’re shy, says Robinett. Knowing this puts you in the same boat.

“You don’t have to be an extrovert to talk to a stranger,” she says. “We’re all so worried what other people might think about us. The truth is that no one cares because they’re worried about themselves.”

Instead, take the focus off of you and put it onto the other person. “The best connectors I know will tell you they’re shy, but that doesn’t stop them from creating powerful networks,” says Robinett. “They simply know that it takes other people to get to their goals and they come out of their comfort zone.”

4. Find common ground

Whether it’s a mutual friend, location, experience, or point of view, find something in common with another person and start a conversation. While the weather is always a safe topic, you can also ask the person if they have children or pets. Or pay attention to your environment. Robinett, who grew up in Idaho, says she once made a new acquaintance because she noticed he had an Idaho license plate.

5. Be fully present and listen

Give the people you are meeting with the courtesy of your full attention when you are with them, says Robinett.

“Bill Clinton is known for his ability to be fully present even when he is with someone for a few seconds,” says Robinett. “The average attention span is eight seconds. Paying attention makes you more memorable and your communication richer.”

Ways to Turn Your Wounds into Wisdom and Strength        marcandangel

View every challenge as an educational assignment. – Ask yourself:  “What is this situation meant to teach me?”  Every situation in our lives has a lesson to teach us.  Some of these lessons include:  To become stronger.  To communicate more clearly.  To trust your instincts.  To express your love.  To forgive.  To know when to let go.  To try something new, learn something new, and never look back.
Ask yourself more positive questions. – If you ask negative questions, you will get negative answers.  There are no positive answers to, “Why me?” “Why didn’t I?” “What if?” etc.  Would you allow someone else to ask you the demoralizing questions you sometimes ask yourself?  I doubt it.  So stop and swap them for questions that push you in a positive direction.  For instance, “What can I do right now to move forward?”
Make small adjustments as you figure out what works and what doesn’t. – A big part of your life is a result of the choices you make.

Keep putting one foot in front of the other. – Winston S. Churchill once said, “If you are going through hell, keep going.”  In other words, never, never, never give in!  The brick walls in life are there for a reason.  They are not there to keep you out.  They are there to give you a chance to show how badly you want something.  Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it as badly as you do.  They are there to stop the other people.

Keep calm and focus on the positive. – The realist sees reality as concrete.  The OPTIMIST sees reality as clay.  Be the optimist and mold the clay your way.  Take what you’ve learned and build something new.  In other words, don’t see the difficulties in today’s opportunities, see the opportunities in today’s difficulties.  Write it on your heart that today is a chance of a lifetime.  And remember that there is always a reason to celebrate.  Slowing down long enough to celebrate the small victories creates momentum and inspiration to keep on.

Remind yourself that you are not alone. – To lose sleep worrying about a friend.  To have trouble picking yourself up after someone lets you down.  To feel like less because someone didn’t love you enough to stay.  To be afraid to try something new for fear that you will fail.  None of this means you’re dysfunctional or crazy.  It just means you’re human, and that you need a little time to right yourself.  You are not alone.  No matter how embarrassed or pathetic you feel about your own situation, there are others out there experiencing the same emotions.

Pay less attention to other people’s opinions of you. – The truth is that what people say and do to you is much more about them, than you.  People’s reactions to you are about their perspectives, wounds and experiences.  Whether someone thinks you’re amazing, or believes you’re terrible, again, is more about them.  I am not suggesting we should be narcissists and ignore all feedback, but I am saying that too much hurt, disappointment and sadness in our lives comes from taking things personally.  In most cases it’s far more productive and healthy to let go of other people’s good or bad opinions of you, and to operate with your own intuition and wisdom as your guide.
Q:
What are ways to turn your wounds into wisdom and strength?
How to let go the painful things?
What is your opinion about the saying: “if you are going through hell, keep going.”
Why we have to pay less attention to other people’s opinions of you?
What do you worry about most?
How to keep calm and focus on the positive?
How to try something new, learn something new?

Science Proves Why Good Sleep Is Critical to Your Success               inc.com

1. You'll be happier while on the job.

Psychologists from Sweden surveyed about 5,000 employed adults about their sleep habits and workplace attitudes. Krim takes their findings seriously: "A single night of sleep directly impacts your day and even your week. Being consciously aware of your sleep habits allows you to really evaluate your happiness both inside and outside of the office." If you're consistently unhappy at work, try getting more rest before going in search of a new job.

2. You'll stay cooler under pressure.

Have you ever noticed that your own fuse seems shorter when you are tired? Your family and coworkers can probably confirm that it is. "A well-rested mind is always more at ease. A good night's sleep helps you tackle all of life's curveballs," he suggests. Vitamin Zzz may be the best type of "chill pill."

3. You'll be more popular.

Krim also references a 2016 study from US and Pakistani business school professors, where those who prioritized sleep were considered more engaging and likable. "Turns out, well-slept leaders are perceived as more charismatic." It should really be no surprise, as a lack of sleep tends to make almost anyone cranky...and it's hard to be cranky and charming at the same time.

4. You'll be less accident prone.

Krim references a 2010 survey of more than 4,000 employees at four U.S. corporations, which linked insomnia and insufficient sleep to decreased productivity, performance, and workplace safety. He explains:"Promoting a good night's sleep across the company will not only save money but also increase productivity and employee happiness."

5. You'll be smarter.

"Sleep improves our ability to problem solve and recall information. By getting a good night's rest, you'll perform better the next day," insists Krim. If that's the case, then one of the keys to working smart instead of just hard is knowing when it's time to knock off and go to bed.

Reasons To Be A Good Samaritan Today
Julie Scagell   scarymommy.com

The term “good Samaritan” comes from a parable in the Bible. In the parable, a traveler is attacked along a dusty stretch of road between Jericho and Jerusalem. A priest and a Levite passed the bruised and battered man by, but it was a Samaritan who had mercy on him. The Samaritan took him home, nursed his wounds, and paid an innkeeper to look after the traveler. Hence, the term good Samaritan is used to describe anyone who offers reasonable assistance to someone believed to be in peril.

Even though I stopped at the scene of the accident to help, I realize that there are many people who are hesitant or afraid to stop to offer help in a crisis. Fears of doing the wrong thing or worrying about not having formal training are common reasons for people to avoid helping in a crisis situation, but here’s the thing: There’s no need to be afraid of being a good Samaritan, and here’s why:

In all 50 states, there are laws that protect citizens who stop to offer reasonable aid to someone in need. Simply put, when you stop at an accident scene, your state has a law to keep you from being prosecuted, so don’t be afraid to stop and lend a hand because you won’t wind up in court. But it’s a good idea to clarify the good Samaritan laws in your state because the laws are so varied.

When an accident happens, it’s everyday people who are there to witness it. It’s the mom in the minivan who can detail the moments leading up to the accident to the police. It’s the man in the parking lot who quickly dials 911. And it’s the woman who stops and simply asks, “Are you okay?” to a scared teenaged driver. You don’t have to perform heroic lifesaving measures to be a good Samaritan. Simply calling 911, and waiting in a nearby parking lot for police, is helpful. Even taking a basic CPR class and learning the signs and symptoms of a heart attack could save a friend’s life.

There are laws to protect good Samaritans in non-crisis situations too. In 1996, the Bill Emerson good Samaritan Food Donation Act was signed into law. This act ensures that anyone who donates reasonably labeled food to local community food banks cannot be prosecuted if the food is damaged or spoiled. Donating food, supporting blood drives, and raising money for a local cause are all part of being a good Samaritan. So even if you feel helpless in situations of crisis, you can do your part for your community in a variety of other ways.

‘Fat’ Ridicule, Struggle Dancing Spur Gastric Sleeve Operation  inquisitr.com

Everything has its limits — even for Mariah Carey. After an unrelenting tide of fat jokes and body-shaming from online trolls and “uninspired” shows brought on by fatigue, Mariah recently underwent gastric sleeve surgery for weight loss to regain the body confidence she once enjoyed, according to a new report.

The online community can be heartless at times; social media often draws out the cruel side of the human spirit from users who spew hate anonymously from their keyboards. Celebrities are often targets of the toxic comments, as they often have the largest base of followers. Mariah Carey, with her 19.4 million fans on Twitter and another 6.2 million on Instagram, is not insulated from online fat-shaming and a barrage of calls for her to lose weight.

Celebrity news site Page Six claims to have an exclusive report of a radical procedure Mariah Carey underwent to lose weight. Insiders say a noted weight-loss doctor in Beverly Hills performed gastric sleeve surgery on Mariah Carey in October after her weight suddenly ballooned.

Mariah’s weight-loss surgery is a novel procedure that involved taking out a portion of the singer’s stomach. The science behind the operation is that a patient will lose weight effortlessly because they feel satiated (or fuller) faster. Because the operation only requires a small incision at the point of entry, the patient often recovers faster with minimal scarring.

Mariah, 47, has struggled publicly with her weight over recent years. She and ex-husband Nick Cannon are parents to twins, Moroccan and Monroe. Fans and tabloids noticed Carey’s gradual weight gain since giving birth. She took notice too when it soon became a struggle to get through a show without feeling winded, as an insider explained.

“Mariah has always been proud of her curves, but this summer, as her Caesars Palace residency came to a close, and then she went on tour with Lionel Richie, she noticed it became harder to dance, and she was getting a lot more criticism online from body shamers.”

The insider said Mariah Carey’s surgery was a success. The Grammy-winning singer is reportedly on the mend and is seeing positive results from the gastric sleeve weight-loss surgery.

Knock-off or Not? The Debate Over Fake Designer Handbags
Heather Fonseca   thestyleconfessions

I have no idea if this Chanel bag I saw on the street was a knock off or not, but I’m leaning toward it being one of the fake designer handbags that proliferates through the black market.  CC logo bags like this are pretty ubiquitous in Los Angeles. Often when I see obvious designer bags like Louis Vuitton or Chanel I wonder if they’re real.  It’s often hard to tell unless you can get quite close.
My Fake Designer Handbags

I admit it – I have worn and enjoyed a few fake designer handbags, but it seems like the more involved I become in the world of fashion blogging, the more the moral issues surrounding the knock-off bag has become a concern for me. It seems to be a reoccurring theme that true style cannot be found if one resorts to fakes. There’s also the issue of buying something that is taking money away from the designers and business people who’s work makes the brand name desirable to begin with. More of a concern to me is the question of stealing a trademark. If making a counterfeit bag is stealing the brand name, then is purchasing one also stealing?

Should buying a fake designer handbag be a crime?

The concerns over counterfeit merchandise go beyond what is and what is not fashionable. Recently I read this article about a New York City Councilwoman who has introduced a bill to make it illegal not just to manufacture and sell fake designer merchandise, but also to buy counterfeit items. If the bill passes and you’re caught trying to purchase a fake designer purse in New York City’s Chinatown you could spend time in jail or pay a $1,000 fine. Although I support the government regulating and enforce fair trade laws, including copyright infringement, I am not a fan of the government trying to regulate morality, and the issue of whether an individual should or should not buy a fake bag is, I think, a moral one. As long as endangered animals are not being killed for their ivory, horns, or hides, I believe it is up to the individual as to what they will and will not purchase, based upon their own moral code. (Obviously there are certain moral issues that go beyond a personal purchasing decision.  I am talking specifically about fashion purchases.) In my case, as much as I try to be a ethical consumer I know that like my various attempts at dieting that all my best intentions are struck down by desire. If there’s one item of clothing I have a hard time saying “no” to it’s a purse I want.  If I can afford it, well, all best intentions are usually thrown to the wind.
Q:
Why do people buy brand names?
Do you like get a designer bags like Louis Vuitton?
What's wrong with buying fake luxury goods?
Why do consumers buy fake brands?
What to do if someone uses your trademark?

How to stop protect endangered animals are not being killed for their ivory, horns, or hides?
