15 Things to Quickly Put You in a Good Mood (by Tess)

Everyone struggles with a bad mood now and then. It's a part of life, especially when too many irritations or inconveniences happen all at once.

Read on for tips to help you put more spring in your step and happy in your mood.

1.  Move!

The number one tip experts give for changing your mood is to exercise. Choose something you enjoy doing, yoga, walking, rollerblading, or a dance video workout,

A short and fast workout can relieve stress and release feel-good endorphins. Think of your athletic shoes as happy shoes!

2. Choose healthy food. Small healthy snacks throughout the day keep your body satisfied. Eat less white rice, pasta, bread, sugar and potatoes. Incorporate grains, vegetables, nuts and seeds in your diet.

3. Make memories. Spend your money on experiences. Sign up for a painting class, go to the museum, or a concert. Experiences create wonderful memories.

4. Get out in nature. Go to the big room with the blue ceiling and green floor. Take a walk in the woods or watch a sunrise. Sitting outside for five minutes a day is enough to feel good and change your mood. Five minutes!

5. Touch. Physical affection is powerful. Give and receive a kiss, a hug, a pat on the back, a touch on an arm or go for a massage. Touch is transformational. Warm fuzzies feel good.

6. Be kind. Look for a way to compliment someone. Anticipate and meet the needs of the people around you. When you bring happiness to others you also bring it to yourself. The smallest act of caring can cause a mini-bliss explosion.

7. Look for good. Look for what’s good in your life. Look for reasons to be thankful. Focus on the positive. You can't be unhappy and positive at the same time.

8. Recharge. Go to bed and get up at the same time everyday. Creating a routine and getting seven hours of sleep will allow you to wake up on the bright side.

9. Make a happy face. Smiling makes you happy even when you’re feeling sad. Smile at yourself in the mirror. Smile at the people you love and even the ones you don’t. We underestimate the transforming power of a smile.

10. Listen to music. There's not much a great song won’t cure. Runners listen to their iPods while running marathons because it’s less painful.

  Questions:
1. How to always be in a good mood?

What makes you happy? List things to make you happier?

 2. Do you think foods that can make you happier?

 3. Does exercise make you happy?

How exercise can make you happy?

 4. How to get out of a bad mood fast?

Ways to let go and overcome a bad mood?

CF not content with Top Pot punishment (China Post)

The government should fine Top Pot Bakery according to the Fair Trade Act instead of the Act Governing Food Sanitation to levy more severe punishments over the addition of artificial essences into the bakery's bread while claiming it uses only natural ingredients, the Consumers' Foundation (CF) said yesterday.
CF board member Hsieh Tien-jen (謝天仁) said that the government should also look into the legal responsibility that Dee Hsu (徐熙娣, also known as Xiao S) should take for helping to promote the bakery.
The chain was recently busted by the Taipei City Government and Taipei prosecutors for adding artificial essences into its bread.
The bakery boasts in advertisements that its bread is made with natural ingredients and zero flavoring essences. The city government later fined the firm NT$180,000 for deceptive advertising and handed the case over to Taipei prosecutors.

1. What you think about top pot bakery event?

3. Should government take care of food safety?

Lawmakers object to electricity price hike plan(China Post)

Several Kuomintang lawmakers yesterday expressed their objections to an electricity price hike by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) slated for October.

The MOEA said that it will not increase prices for households that use less than 500 kilowatt hours of electricity, meaning that approximately 85.7 percent of households will not be affected.

KMT caucus whip Lai Shyh-bao (賴士葆) said after the conference that a final decision has yet to be made, but that four lawmakers expressed opposition to the proposal.

Discussions centered on whether or not the government should stop subsidizing industrial and financial institutions as well as households that use a large amount of electricity, Lai said.

Questions:
1. What you think about the price of electricity price increase?
2.Why electricity bills are rising?
3. How to save money on electricity ?

Ways to breaking the ice (magforwomen.com)

Breaking the ice between you and the another person is surely not rocket science. But, it is also not something you can do without the application of mind. The idea here is to be creative. You cannot come up with a line that has been used for centuries and expect the person to feel comfortable talking to you. You may come across as a person who is desperate to talk to him. They say the first impression is the last impression. Hence, it is very important to come up with a line that is spontaneous, witty and original.

1. ‘Hi’ followed by a warm smile

Though it sounds very simple, it can be very effective. If you have a great smile, use it to your advantage. Walk up to him and greet him. Charm a person with one of your best smiles.

2. Talk about the weather

This is one of the best ways to stir up a conversation with almost anyone. There is always something to talk about the weather. ‘Isn’t it cold?’ or ‘God! It’s hot.’ are some examples.

3. ‘Have we met before?’

This can be later followed by something like, ‘Oh, you resemble someone (or an old friend) so much. You must meet them.’ After this, you can have the rest of your conversation stirred along.

4. The ‘Ask-for-help’ method

Now you have to do this well. Some amount of acting skills would help. Act as if you accidentally dropped something down, like a bundle of books or a bunch of pens. Do this when you are close to him. He would naturally try to help you. You can start a conversation from here. If he doesn’t bother to help, you seriously shouldn’t be trying to talk to him.

5. Witty funny comments

Casually comment about something around you. However, make sure it is funny enough to crack him up. You could talk about anything or any person around you.
Questions:

1. How to break the ice when meet new people?

2. How to start a conversation with a girl or a boy you crush on?

3. How to pick good topics to start conversation?

4. How to improve conversation skills?

Ways to sharpen your communication skills?

5. Do you think a warm smile is an effective communication skill?

6. What topics of conversation you should avoid at first meeting?

Are Pheromones a Secret Weapon For Dating? (ABC news)

Odorless pheromones are secreted by many animals to attract mates. But they're also synthesized and marketed to consumers as potions to increase sexual attractiveness.

They've been sold for years, but new studies and claims are making these items hotter than ever. Paris Hilton knows. She added them to her latest perfume. But the debate remains: Do pheromones really work or is this just all hype?
"I think our product is the only product that has any proof behind its claims," said biologist Winifred Cutler, a leading pheromone champion and owner of the Athena Institute, which manufactures and sells pheromone products.
Cutler said she had proof they worked for 75 percent of customers who had tried her products, which sell for about $100 for 1/6 of an ounce.
"Our pheromones are sexual attractants. They do make the wearers more sexually attractive," she said.
Some scientists remain skeptical about the existence of human pheromones. "Maybe just the idea of knowing that you're wearing the stuff will help," said Dr. Stuart Firestein, a biologist at Columbia University who studies the science of smell. "There's certainly always going to be a very strong placebo effect in these sorts of things."
Sex pheromone (Wikipedia)
Sex pheromones are pheromones released by an organism to attract an individual of the opposite sex, get them to mate with them, or some other function closely related with sexual reproduction. Sex pheromones specifically focus on indicating females for breeding, attracting the opposite sex, and conveying information on their species, age, sex and genotype after emitted by males.

 Questions:
1. In your opinion, how do pheromones work?
2. How to make yourself an attractive person?
Ways to be charming?
3. What are the best way to attract the opposite sex?
Tips to attract the opposite sex?
4. How to attract a woman's attention/ a man's attention?

6. Do guys/girs like it when a person wear perfume?
(iamtatala.xanga.com)

 究竟人的身體是否真含有這種物質可以用來提煉香水?有的,這種物質叫pheromone(費洛蒙)。

Taiwan argues over decriminalizing adultery (chinanews.com)
At the Cabinet's weekly meeting on March 14, Lung said, after hearing a report from the Ministry of Justice on government efforts to promote human rights, that she used to feel awkward when speaking with foreigners about the existence of a law making adultery a crime in Taiwan, as well as its being a crime of 'civil disturbance', established in the Publication Law and the Criminal Code.

According to Article 239 of the Criminal Code, a married person who commits adultery shall be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than one year, with the other party subject to the same punishment.

Incidentally, adultery is not a crime in mainland China. Among bigger countries, only South Korea and Islamic countries still list adultery as a 'criminal offense'.

Later, in an interview, Lung said, "It is a different era now. It is absurd that marriage should still rely on the support of judges, police officers and detectives.." She said she believes the law is 'not democratic enough', and suggested its decriminalization.

Supporters and opponents have been debating the issue, from the stances of the values they hold. The legal department in charge of the law's administration argued the crime should be retained as it is not against the constitution or the principle of equality. But it said the matter would be further discussed after listening to opinions from all sectors of society.

The majority of divorce cases involve an alleged adulterer being subjected to a criminal trial. Along with the divorce request based on the fault of adultery often comes a request of compensation for mental distress caused by the adultery.

Huang Ja-lei, a former judge and now a Judicial Yuan official, said most women file criminal charges against their husbands in the hope the husbands would end their affairs for fear of having a criminal record.

He said, however, that chances are that marriages were damaged even more once charges were filed, and a charge is itself detrimental to a couple's reconciliation.

"Many women thought they could get their husbands back by taking [a case] to court. They tried to make a deal, promising to drop the charge as long as the husband came back," Huang said. "But, in reality, most of them only regret it when they realize the court can't help love to continue."

Questions:

1. What you think decriminalize adultery?

2. What to do when you find your spouse cheating?

4. How to stop your man/woman having affairs?

Stereotypes Examples (fos.iloveindia.com)

Whenever we don't have a good understanding of a subject, say, of people or countries, then we tend to make assumptions about them. Stereotype is nothing but those assumptions that have become common knowledge. Whenever you make judgments about people without knowing them, you are stereotyping them. Stereotyping makes people generalize things. More often, they are all false assumptions. Though there are both positive and negative stereotypes, a majority of them are offensive. People generally stereotype out of bias against a particular group of people or religion. Stereotyping becomes a way of conveying their dislike.
Negative Stereotypes
All blond women are dumb.
Guys are messy and unclean.

Men who spend too much time on the computer or read are geeks.

Men who are not into sports are termed as gay.

Girls are not good at sports.

Only anorexic women can become models.

Women who smoke and drink do not have morals.

Men who like pink are effeminate.

Positive Stereotypes

All Blacks are great basketball players.

Asians have high IQs. They are smarter than most in Math and Science.

 French are romantic.

All Asians know kung fu.
Italians are good lovers.

 Racial Stereotypes

All Muslims are terrorists.

All Jewish people are greedy, selfish money hungry people.

All Italians are stylish and sophisticated. They are usually painters, sculptors or fashion designers.

All Middle easterners hate America.

 Chinese will eat anything.

All South Koreans are gaming nerds.

All Indians and Chinese are cheap and live a frugal life.

Questions:

1. Is stereotyping bad?

Why is stereotyping bad?

2. Are there any false stereotypes in Taiwan?

3. How stereotypes affect us and what can be done about it?

4. Can stereotypes be changed?

How to change our look and avoid stereotypes

5. What are the advantages and disadvantages of stereotyping?

6. What are the causes of stereotypes?

7. What is the difference between bias and stereotype?

Why, for some, laughter is the best medicine By R. Morgan Griffin

Laughter Therapy: What Happens When We Laugh?

We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse and blood pressure go up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues.

People who believe in the benefits of laughter say it can be like a mild workout — and may offer some of the same advantages as a workout.

The effects of laughter and exercise are very similar,” says Wilson. “Combining laughter and movement, like waving your arms, is a great way to boost your heart rate.”

And laughter appears to burn calories, too. Maciej Buchowski, a researcher from Vanderbilt University, conducted a small study in which he measured the amount of calories expended in laughing. It turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories.

Laughter’s Effects on the Body

Blood flow. Researchers at the University of Maryland studied the effects on blood vessels when people were shown either comedies or dramas. After the screening, the blood vessels of the group who watched the comedy behaved normally — expanding and contracting easily. But the blood vessels in people who watched the drama tended to tense up, restricting blood flow.

Immune response. Increased stress is associated with decreased immune system response, says Provine. Some studies have shown that the ability to use humor may raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body and boost the levels of immune cells, as well.

Relaxation and sleep. The focus on the benefits of laughter really began with Norman Cousin’s memoir, Anatomy of an Illness. Cousins, who was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a painful spine condition, found that a diet of comedies, like Marx Brothers films and episodes of Candid Camera, helped him feel better. He said that ten minutes of laughter allowed him two hours of pain-free sleep.
Questions:
1. Do you believe laughter can be good medicine?

2. Why laughter is good for us?

The benefits of laughter?

3. How to relieve stress using laughter therapy?

4. How often do you laugh?

Weird Jobs That You Can Actually Make A Living At  (jobprofiles.org)

1. Odor Tester
This one is pretty odd, but some chemist has to make sure that all of those deodorants and anti-perspirants are operating properly to keep their users free of funk

2. Pet Detective

Another one we might have missed if it weren't for a film or television show. Ace Ventura, pet detective, displayed just how important this job is, especially when Dan Marino is in trouble! Personally I would've gone with a missing ad in the paper, but these folks are sure to find that furry member of the family.

3. Snake Milker

snakeIf you ever get bitten by a poisonous snake you'll be grateful these people know how to work with animals. They are responsible for getting the venom out of snakes to make the anti-venom. Be honest, which one of you thought that snakes had actual milk glands?

4. Cow Hoof Trimmer

Just like horseshoes, cows need some hoof maintenance too. These fine animals can have poor milk production, lameness, and decreased fertility if not properly groomed. Try to imagine giving a cow a pedicure.

5. Chicken Sexer

Going through baby chicks and separating them according to sex. I hear this job is pretty easy, if you just play bad 80's music and set things up like a 5th grade dance, they separate themselves.

6. Cartoon People/Mascots

Remember when you went to Disneyworld for the first time when you were eight? You got to meet Mickey Mouse and Goofey! Well we all now know that those are real people in there and are aware of it, this is still a pretty weird job.

7. Dog Food Tester

Watch out guys, this gal is going to have some great breath in store for you. Just like any other meals, dog food needs to be inspected too. I suppose they can't use dogs to test the food so this profession requires a taste testing of such a delicious cuisine.

8. Whiskey Ambassador

whiskeyLet's face it, this is every over 21 year old's dream job. You would be responsible for choosing only the finest whiskeys and teaching your clients the proper way to taste and admire the different attributes which this delicious liquor can possess. Sign me up!

9. Dice Inspector

With one false move of a single die a person can lose quite a bit of money on those craps tables. The dice inspector checks for proportionality, specific angles, and blemishes. I guess if dice are not perfect they can't be the reason for you going broke in the casino.

 Questions:
1. What do you think these odd jobs?
2. Would you get an unusual job with high salaries?
3. What would be your ideal job? Why?
4. How to make a good career choice?

How to get a well paying job?
5. Will you take dangerous job with good pay?

6. In your opinion, what are the best paying jobs in Taiwan?

Taiwan's Guanshan among world's best sunset spots: CNN

Taipei, Aug. 14 (CNA) Southern Taiwan's Guanshan was chosen by CNN earlier this week as one of the world's most superb sunset spots, the Tourism Bureau said Wednesday.

Guanshan has made the list of best sunset sites because it offers an excellent view of Hengchun Peninsula, a popular tourist spot in the south of the island, CNN said Monday.

"What (Guanshan) has is beautiful hot springs and forests," said the American news network, which has lauded Taiwanese cuisine and townships in previous reports.

The fact that there are no trains or highways on the peninsula, where the 152-meter-high mountain Guanshan sits, has made the area a paradise for sunset watching, CNN said.

Besides Guanshan, CNN listed 11 other remarkable sunset spots across the world, including the Grand Canyon in the U.S., West Lake in China, Phnom Bakheng in Cambodia and Easter Island in Chile.

Questions:

1. Where do you want to travel in Taiwan?

2.In your opinion, where is the most beautiful scenery in Taiwan?

3.Where do you think you can see a beautiful sunset?

Do you like sunrise or sunset better? Why?

How gossiping with friends on Facebook only makes you glum  By Nick Mcdermott

Scientist claims more time spent of the site the worse you feel

Study looked at browsing habits of 82 adults with Facebook accounts

Volunteers asked to rate level of life satisfaction at the start and end

Found happiness levels declined the more they used Facebook

It is used by millions of people to stay in touch with friends and family.

But far from brightening their day, Facebook could be making its users more unhappy.

Scientists have found the more time individuals spend on the social networking site, the worse they subsequently feel.

More than one in three Britons use Facebook every day, with 24 million logging on to share their latest goings on.

On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection,’ said lead researchers Dr Ethan Kross, a psychologist at the University of Michigan.

But rather than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the opposite result - it undermines it.’ Research carried out earlier this year at the University of Chester suggested Facebook friends are no substitute for the real thing.

It found people are happier and laugh 50 per cent more when talking face-to-face with friends or via webcam than when they use social networking sites.

And the current study backed these findings, with participants who had direct interactions with other people feeling better over time.

In contrast, the more individuals used Facebook during the period, the greater the reduction in their life satisfaction levels.

This is a result of critical importance because it goes to the very heart of the influence that social networks may have on people’s lives,’ said co-author John Jonides, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Michigan.
