寂寞現代人
Is
modern life making us lonely? (By Vanessa Barford)
It can be hard to admit to feelings of
loneliness, but one in 10 Britons is lonely. It's not just an issue for the
elderly - loneliness is rising among the young. So are we all destined to be
lonely?
"No man is an island, entire of
itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main," wrote
the poet John Donne in the 17th Century.
Some people seek isolation, but few choose
to be lonely.
Loneliness not only makes us unhappy, but
it is bad for us. It can lead to a lack of confidence and mental health
problems like depression, stress and anxiety.
Studies have consistently shown that one in
10 of us is lonely, but a report by the Mental Health Foundation suggests
loneliness among young people is increasing.
At the same time, social changes such as
the rise of the solo dweller and the surge in social networks, combined with an
ageing population, are changing the way people interact with each other.
So is modern life making us lonely?
People feel lonely for different reasons,
says Michelle Mitchell, charity director general of Age UK, but it tends to be
triggered by a big life event.
"It can be poor health, illness,
money, children moving away, feeling cut off from family and friends and the
community, friends dying, a lack of access to transport, redundancy or career
problems or divorce. Often it's when people lose a sense of purpose and contribution.
"Bereavement is also a big issue -
losing your husband or wife can have a really detrimental impact on how people
feel about the world," she says.
But while bereavement and ill health may be
inevitable, there's a sense modern society is exacerbating other triggers of
loneliness.
EU figures suggest that, in the UK as a
whole, 13% of the population lives alone. Denmark has the highest proportion of
single-dwellers, at 24%. In Germany, Finland and Sweden, that number is just
below 20%.

Does
the Horror and Violence of Films Influence Society?
(The Outlaw)
The cinematic industry has grown increasingly
towards a shift in violence and horror in its films. However, the real question
is, what kind of impact does this violence have on American school children and
adults. I answer that question and more in this essay.
There has been much debate throughout the
course of American society over the use of violence in books, films, and video
games. Several years ago, a bill was passed in Congress which required that all
video games have ratings on them such as "M" for Mature and
"E" for Everyone. These ratings were required because games such as
that involving shooting like "Vice City" were thought of to incite
violence among teenagers and young children. With the rating system, parents
and adults could know the risks of such video games.
children who have been brought up in caring
and nurturing environments really aren't affected by these films. The best ways
to deal with horror and violent films that teenagers and young children have
seen is by talking with them according to James Ranol of Brown University. By
having parents talk with their children it allows children to understand what
they have just seen and that the film is not real. Some children think that
shooting guns is cool. Parents must talk with their children to make them
understand that it is not cool at all and in fact very dangerous.
In the United States there has been an
increasing movement towards prohibiting games that promote violence from going
onto the market to be sold to children and teenagers. Prohibition of these
games, while i do favor the idea, would be bad for this country because it
violates the freedom of manufacturers to make profits and sell their games. In
order to curtail the problem of violence, parents must be more aware of the
games and films that their children watch on a daily basis.

How to Restrain Yourself from an Outburst
Angry outbursts typically refer to explosive, violent, or loud reactions to events that are either without cause, or out of proportion to the actual event. People of all ages can suffer from angry outbursts, even though they are most often associated with children. Adults with anger issues, or sometimes those suffering from other mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety disorders, can experience these outbursts as well. This can cause significant problems in all aspects of an individual's life, particularly in work and interpersonal relationships. Often, an individual with anger problems will feel as if he or she wants to control the anger, but that it is not possible to do so.
There are some common characteristics that people with angry outbursts will experience each time it occurs. Many people will feel changes in the body that precede an outburst, such as an increased heart rate or shallow, rapid breaths; others will actually feel warmth or heat in the body and face. This is typically due to a rush of adrenaline in the body, often known as the "fight or flight" response. It tends to just make the angry outbursts worse, because physiologically, it is very difficult to control this adrenaline response.
Depending on how a person usually responds to anger, this rush of adrenaline can cause angry outbursts to look different in each person. Some people will respond by yelling or using inappropriate language at someone. Others will behave in a more violent way, sometimes throwing or breaking things or, in the worst scenarios, becoming violent toward another person. Abusive relationships are often characterized by angry outbursts of this nature, which is always unacceptable, regardless of the cause. Sometimes the person experiencing the outburst will legitimately feel as if it is beyond his or her control; at this point, it is time for the person to seek professional help.
Angry outbursts can be caused for a number of reasons. Sometimes people just did not ever learn how to properly express themselves. Substance abuse, particularly alcohol abuse, often contributes to these types of angry outbursts as well. Other mental illnesses such as anger and depression can also cause these events, sometimes because anger is the safest way for an individual to express the way he or she is feeling; in addition, some outbursts can be attributed to ADD or even low blood sugar. Regardless, people who are experiencing this situation in their lives need to take immediate steps to get help and resolve the problem.

The yellow rubber duck (CNN) -- What could possibly draw 500,000 spectators to a Taiwan harbor front in the midst of typhoon Usagi threats?
A giant inflatable duck, of course.
After stirring up a duck craze in Hong Kong in May and June, the 18-meter inflatable duck created by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman arrived at Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan last Thursday.
Some 500,000 people showed up to see the duck within five days, including on Saturday, when officials suspended the exhibition due to the expected arrival of Usagi.
Q: What you think about this activity?
