Soul-searching in Taiwan after four-year-old girl beheaded     By Cindy Sui BBC News, Taipei

A day after a man grabbed a four-year-old girl off her bicycle and decapitated her with a cleaver in broad daylight, Taiwan is in shock.

"A mother couldn't protect her child even though she was standing right near her. How can we feel assured that our children will be safe?" asked Lindy Wang, a mother of three.

On Monday night, anger poured out on the streets when crowds surrounded the suspect, a man in his 40s, as he was being led into a police station. Some punched him.

Schools were on alert on Tuesday and police officers were dispatched to a school the assailant was believed to have been headed to when he came across the girl.

The killing was the latest in a string of random attacks on the island and the third against children in the past four years.

Further heightening fears, on Tuesday, a police officer was stabbed in the head by a 28-year-old man after he approached the man to ask him why he was at a train platform with a steak knife. The officer's injuries were non life-threatening.

Taiwanese people say such crimes did not use to happen on this small island, rated as the second safest place in the world because of its low crime rate according to global surveys.

Huang Tsung-jen, the deputy director general of the National Police Agency, told the BBC: "This is not a crime problem, but a societal problem."

The suspect had a history of drug offences, was unemployed for some time and had sought treatment at a psychiatric hospital.

"The whole society's safety net has loopholes - we should be asking whether we have enough resources to help the mentally ill and the unemployed," said Mr Huang.

He has urged the public to be calm, saying Taiwan's crime prevention system is good, and its crime rate has been declining significantly. It dropped to its lowest level on record last year.

After the killing, legislators immediately proposed a bill requiring random killers of children to be sentenced to death.

Believe in overnight success.

You know the story: some 20-year-old guy created a mobile app that sold for millions of dollars in a matter of days. The story may seem real, but if you look deeper, you’re sure to learn that the guy had created 50 apps previously and maybe had a masters or PhD in his field. He’s been thinking about the problem and potential solutions for years and years. There is no such thing as overnight success.

Let others decide which way you should take.

If we’re lucky, we’ll often come across people in our field who have more experience than we do. When you’re building a project and people with experience offer to advise, by all means listen to them, learn from them, thank them. But you’re the one who ultimately has to decide what steps to take. For example, I believe deeply in digital and mobile, and I believe in focusing on one thing, but last year I made the decision, in addition to digital courses, to also run live, offline courses at FazINOVA to best serve the needs of our customers — and it’s been a great success.
Think of your life as a pipe system. You can choose many paths, but in order to get to a place that’s aligned with what you believe, you must make choices for yourself. Yes, you’ll bump your head sometimes. But it’s part of finding your path.

Blame someone else.

I have friends who say: “I built the best product ever, but market conditions are horrible. No one is buying stuff.” Or they may say: “I have the best idea ever, but no investor has the vision to understand it.” It’s easy to lay blame. OK, market conditions may be bad. Yes, investors may have a different view than you do. But if zero people are buying your product and zero investors understand your vision, there is probably a problem. Change the product, change the team, change the approach, change the plan. Do not wait until some magic falls from the sky to turn your dream into reality. There is no such thing. You have dreams? Be responsible for them. No one else will.

Value achieving a dream, and nothing else.

Once I saw an ad that had friends hiking a mountain. It was a hard hike and they were tired, but they kept moving. After a few hours, they finally got to the top. They celebrated. Two minutes after, they said to each other: “OK, let’s go down.” People fantasize that when they arrive at a goal, they will automatically find happiness there. Achievement is fantastic, but it is a momentary sensation. Your life is not momentary. Life is never about the goals themselves — it is the journey. The best way to achieve your goals is to truly enjoy every single step on the path towards that goal.
