Watching Sad Movies Actually Makes You
Happier
Jamie Condliffe gizmodo
From bawling your eyes out over Bambi as a
kid, to the slow, painful tug of the heart strings that was Beginners, most of
us are suckers for a sad film. But a new study suggests that the reason for
that might be incredibly simple: It turns out that sad films make us happy.
The research, carried out at The Ohio State
University, tried to get to the bottom of our emotional reactions to sad
cinema. To do that, researchers sat down 361 college students and made them
watch the 2007 movie Atonement. That flick, in case you missed it, features two
separated lovers who die as war casualties. That counts as sad.
Before and after the viewing, the
participants were asked how happy they were with their life, and during the
film they were also asked to rate their current emotional state.
The result? People who experienced the
greatest increase in sadness during the movie reported increased life happiness
after viewing it. They also rated the film as being better. The results appear
in Communication Research. Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, one of the researchers,
explains to Science Daily:
"People seem to use tragedies as a way to reflect on the important
relationships in their own life, to count their blessings. That can help
explain why tragedies are so popular with audiences, despite the sadness they
induce."
Previous psychological research has linked
sadness with increased thoughtfulness. What's happening with sad movies, say
the researchers, is that when they trigger a big enough emotional response,
viewers begin to analyze their personal lives and appreciate them more. That
makes them happier.
Of course, if your personal life is in
complete tatters, you might not achieve quite these results. You should
probably watch the Muppets instead.
Taiwan 7-Eleven launches fitness gym at
Taipei store
Taiwan News
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - Taiwan's 7-Eleven
announced it will launch a gym at one of its convenience stores in Taipei,
following its endeavor to diversify services at different locations, which have
included a beauty service "K.Seren" in Banqiao of New Taipei last
month, and a completely automated "X-Store" in Taipei City early this
year.
Running from 6 a.m. in the morning to
midnight seven days a week, the gym is the first of its kind in the country,
and is located on the second floor of a 7-Eleven store near MRT Xingtian Temple
Station, although is not pioneering the concept. Japan's FamilyMart started a
24-hour fitness gym last December, and aims to open 300 gyms on the second
floors of FamilyMart stores throughout the country within five years.
The gym, 55 pings, has shower and changing
rooms, and a total of 40 different types of workout equipment including:
treadmills, smith cage, adjustable bench, kettlebells and dumbbells. Shampoo,
lotion, and hair dryers are provided in the shower rooms. The gym will charge
each guest NT$100 (US$3.36) for the first hour and NT$40 (US$1.34) for each subsequent
30 minute period.
Paid personal trainers for boxing, TRX
suspension, kettlebell, weight trainings, and group courses for TRX, Pilates,
Barre, and different types of Yoga will also be made available upon
request.
The gym is run under the brand name BEING
Fit, a subsidiary of the Uni-president Group (統一集團). The
group operates all the 7-Eleven convenience store chains in Taiwan.
Beingspa General Manager Chen Pei-rong (陳佩蓉) told media on Monday that the country's second 7-Eleven gym is on
the way, and that more gyms are being planned for the central and southern
regions of the country.
The 7-Eleven store with a gym will be
selling sportswear, underwear, protein bars, post-workout beverages and related
products for gym goers.

China live streaming: Would-be internet stars boost billion-dollar market
Shu Zhang uk.reuters
BEIJING (Reuters) - Jing Qi, a part-time presenter on the live streaming platform Huajiao, underwent cosmetic surgery in March to improve her chances of becoming an internet celebrity.
After five hours of rhinoplasty and facial fat injections that left her with gauze covering her nose, eyes, forehead and cheeks, the 27-year-old said she felt “even worse than dead”. But the suffering was worth it.
Jing is among tens of thousands hoping to find online stardom as an anchor on the live video streaming phenomenon sweeping China’s media.
The fastest-emerging internet sector barely existed in China three years ago but last year produced revenues of more than 30 billion yuan ($4.3 billion) and according to an estimate by investment bank China Renaissance Securities, is set to more than triple that by 2020. That puts it on track to overtake cinema box office receipts in a few year’s time.
“I want more people to watch me, to spend Huajiao coins on me,” Jing explained, referring to the virtual gifts her online followers buy that she can later redeem in part for cash.
“In the end, I’ll be able to marry a tall, handsome and rich man,” Jing said.
The rapid growth of live streaming in China has attracted a rush of investment, led by China’s tech heavyweights, Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group Holding and Baidu Inc. They hope live streaming can boost existing services in e-commerce, social networking and gaming.
Tencent, the country’s biggest online gaming and social networking company, is backing a slew of streaming and interactive entertainment firms, including gaming platform Douyu. Alibaba’s Taobao marketplace launched a live-streaming platform early last year, allowing sellers to promote products directly to online viewers in real time.
The lure is some 344 million Chinese netizens – more than the population of every country on the planet bar China and India - who were watching live streaming sites in December. And that is only about 47 percent of all Chinese Internet users. There are about 150 live streaming platforms, most producing entertainment shows.
The importance of live streaming in lower-tier cities is greater than elsewhere in China. Access to the internet via a mobile phone is the major, if not the only, gateway to shopping and entertainment, said Karen Chan, equities analyst at Jefferies Hong Kong.
Live streaming has also bolstered the growth of ancillary businesses, including agencies looking to find the next live streaming star, consumer loans, and even cosmetic surgery.
Deng Jian, chairman of Three Minute TV, an agency that provides 1,000 trained anchors to more than three dozen platforms, said his business operates a “militarized” production machine to feed the live streaming industry.

Mob of 300 ransacks home of uncle suspected of killing 5-year-old niece in Changhua
Taiwan News
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- An angry lynch mob of 300 vigilantes last night (May 24) ransacked the Changhua home of a man suspected of killing and molesting his 5-year-old niece when they believed that he had been released from police custody, reported Apple Daily.
Last night, a rumor spread on Facebook that the suspect, surnamed Yang (楊), was already going to be released on bail, and though this was false information, it was repeatedly shared on the social media platform. By 9 p.m. last night, an angry mob of 300 (with some reports saying 500) vigilantes had surrounded Yang's house in Changhua County's Tianwei Township, with some reportedly coming as far away as Tainan and Chiayi to seek revenge for the girl.
The hysteric crowd broke their way into Yang's home where they smashed furniture with baseball bats, shattered windows, set off fireworks and tossed about hell money to curse the family. Fearing for her life, Yang's mother fled to the nearby police station, and a large part of the mob followed her to call for her son's release so they could exact their vengeance.
After being dissuaded by police, the enraged horde returned to Yang's home to continue to wreak havoc until 1 a.m. this morning. Much of the chaos was streamed live on Facebook.
Meanwhile, another rumor spread that Yang would be at the mortuary, where an autopsy was being carried out on the body of the little girl. Another agitated mob of around 50 soon surrounded the building and they refused to leave until 11 a.m. this morning.
Following the chaos, police this morning arrested a 20-year-old man surnamed (吳) and a 30-year-old man surnamed Huang (黃) and seized two baseball bats, which they suspect the men used to smash furniture in Yang's home. Police also arrested a 28-year-old man surnamed Chiu (邱) who allegedly on Facebook posted a rumor reading "Bail? Let's gather, let's gather, and go and get him..."
Police allege that Chiu also live-streamed the riot and are charging him with inciting violence.
According to police, the deceased girl was born when her mother surnamed Lin was only 17. When Lin divorced her husband, Lin took care of her daughter with her older sister. But after Lin got remarried, she placed her daughter under the care of her sister and her sister’s 24-year-old husband surnamed Yang, police said.
The girl lived in Tianwei Township and had reportedly endured long-term physical abuse at the hands of her uncle Yang. She was transferred to Changhua Christian Hospital from a local hospital Tuesday afternoon (May 22) in critical condition after suffering an alleged attack by Yang. She suffered from an anal fissure, intracerebral hemorrhage, and new and old marks of injuries were found in many parts of her body, according to media reports.

Wu Feng tries to survive on NT$100 for one day in Taipei

Turkish-Taiwanese entertainer Wu Feng (吳鳳) tries to eat three meals with just NT$100 over the course of one day in Taipei
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- To help raise awareness of disadvantaged families in Taiwan, Turkish TV show host Ugur Rifat Karlova, better known as Wu Feng (吳鳳), posted a video on Tuesday (May 22) showing himself trying to purchase three meals over the course of a day in Taipei with only NT$100 (US$3.33).
In order to demonstrate the hardships many impoverished families in Taiwan endure, Wu Feng posted a video on Tuesday on Facebook and YouTube showing himself trying to survive an entire day with only NT$100. According to a report by Children.org.tw titled "2018 Vulnerable Family Diet and Housing Difficulties Survey" (2018年弱勢家庭飲食,住宅困境調查), nearly 60 percent of poor families in Taiwan are underfed each day.
First, for breakfast, Wu Feng bought a rice ball (飯糰) for NT$35, but was unable to purchase a drink because it would quickly break his budget. For lunch, Wu Feng found a shop selling scallion cakes (蔥油餅), which could run as high as NT$50 for extra ingredients, so he opted for the plain version at NT$25, again, no drink was an option for his budget.
By the afternoon, Wu Feng was becoming badly dehydrated in the 35 degree Celsius heat, so he took a plastic bottle and filled it up with water from a nearby school. For dinner, with only NT$40 left, Wu Feng chose to use the very last bit of spare change buy a bowl of hot dry noodles.
Wu Feng concluded that this was a very harsh way to survive as the food had low nutritional value and his budget did not leave him enough money to purchase fruits or vegetables. He also imagined that this would quickly start to have a negative effect on his body and mental outlook.

How to Build a Social Network wikihow
1
Throw a party. From a birthday party to a friendly get together, parties are a great way to gather your friends and expand your network. Ask all of your close friends to come and encourage them to bring guests. Speak with everyone at the party and get phone numbers and contact information from those you do not know and that you share common interests with.
2
Say yes to invitations. Attend weddings, funerals and parties that you are invited to. Showing that you care about the people in your network, even if you just pop in and say hi, will cause those that are in your 'network' to return the same courtesy. And, you could meet other people there too.
If you have to say no to an invitation, send an event-appropriate gift or card.
3
Get active. Consider volunteering and joining a cause that you believe in. You might agitate for a change in election procedures, march against corruption, fundraise for the homeless in your neighborhood, or join an anti-deportation league.[4]
You will meet people who share your interests and do some good at the same time.
Being active also shows that you care about something greater than yourself, which may help you meet new people.
4
Find in-person activities online. Meet new people by joining groups of strangers that gather for socializing. Sites like Meetup.com offer local volunteer-led hiking groups, poker parties, and other fun things. Since everyone is participating in the initial difficulty of meeting with strangers, the awkwardness is diminished.
5
Attend summits, festivals, conferences, expositions, and fairs. Go to large meetups that involve the topics you are interested in. Whether they are about technology, skiing or scrapbooking, you will meet new people that share similar interests. Introduce yourself to people in line, ask questions at panels, and add other attendees on social media.
Try going to the same gatherings every year. That way, you'll make friends with other regulars.
Create business cards that you can hand out to new contacts to stay in touch.
6
Give back by hosting. If you want to participate in a community, you have to give back! That means hosting parties and connecting people, promoting the interests of others within your network, and otherwise being a mensch to those around you.
Consider starting your own activist, social, or artistic group. This can be a bit of a daunting task, but if you start your own group, whether an internet bulletin board group or an actual meet and greet group, people will be coming to you instead of you looking for them. This is a great way to meet new contacts and friends.
7
Work your network. Once you have established yourself in a community, and are known to give back to it, ask for favors. Should you be seeking a job, don't hesitate to tell everyone in your network about it. Send out resumes to those you are closest to or those that share business interest.

Reasons We Need Friends
Why and how friends can shape your life
psychologytoday.com
Copyright Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D. 2013
Friends can give you vital life skills. Friendfluence gives you vital life skills; “the very abilities one generally needs to be successful in life” (p. 6). There are many perks of friendship include sharpening your mind, making you generally happier, knowing yourself better, becoming inspired to reach your goals, advancing your career, helping you meet romantic partners, and living a longer and healthier life.
Friends can help you define your priorities. People tend to pick friends who are similar to them. This fact falls under the general proximity rule of close relationships, in that like tends to attract like. Because we fall prey so easily into this similarity trap, it is important to try to stretch yourself to learn from some of those opposites. Flora points out the many ways in which “Birds, feather, flock.” Knowing this can help you grow by expanding your range of friends and trying out some new points of view.
Having friends can help you get more friends. People tend to like others who have a reputation for being nice and helpful, and they like people who like them. If you want to be the type of person who attracts new friends, these qualities will help get you on your way toward building your social group. Once you have more friends, you’ll be able to enjoy some of those perks of friendship.
Close friends support you through thick and thin. To take the most advantage of friendfluence, put effort into your closest friendships. Although being friendly can get you more friends, you don’t need hundreds to help you through life. You may have to prune your friendship tree as you get older to be sure that you give enough attention to the ones who will really matter for your well-being.
Friends can make you miserable too. There is a dark side to friendship. The people who know you the best are also the ones who have the most power to betray you, should the relationship sour. Friends can also get you into trouble. If your friends are doing something bad or harmful, you tend to be more likely to do so as well, a fact to which many drinking buddies can certainly attest. Friends can also cause you stress when they get in the way of other important goals or relationships. Be ready to say no to friends who disappoint, betray, or stress you and you’ll be more likely to get the full friendfluence effect.
You’re less lonely when you have friends. The worst kind of friendfluence, according to Flora, is a complete lack of friends. Loneliness is painful, especially when you are living with loneliness for a prolonged period of time. This is yet another reason to put time, energy, and attention into finding and cultivating a close circle of friends.
Your online friends can steer your thoughts and behaviors. Although online friends are qualitatively different than your in-person friends, they shape you nevertheless. They can also be your source of life support. Flora shows us how Toni Bernhard, author of How to be Sick (link is external), and confined to her home, has maintained a lifeline to the outside world through her closest online friends. Of course, your online friends can also make you miserable too, especially if you get caught in the “friendship paradox” (the fact that most people on Facebook have fewer friends than the average number). If you can avoid having Facebook envy dominate your life, you’ll have more rewarding connections with your extended friendship community.

American man charged with sexual harassment molests 3 women in Taipei courthouse
Taiwan News
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- An American man who was awaiting a hearing in a Taipei district court for acts of sexual harassment he allegedly committed on Jan. 4, he was reported to have again sexually harassed several women in the courthouse, resulting in his arrest.
Reportedly reeking of alcohol, a 36-year-old American man identified by his first name of "Joseph" appeared at the Shilin District Court at 8:40 a.m. yesterday (May 21) for a court hearing that was to take place at 9:10 a.m.
When Joseph arrived, he smiled lasciviously at a female police officer who was sitting behind a glass window and continued to lustily stare at her and laugh maniacally until she called for other police to help, reported China Times. Next, Joseph ran to a post office counter where he pressed his body against a mother's arm and introduced himself by saying, "Hey good morning, nice to meet you, I'm Tom."
The woman considered him to be a pervert and alerted the police to deal with him. Joseph then ran to the security check where he saw a female bailiff conducting security inspections on people entering the building. He then grabbed the woman's buttocks from behind, before running to the second floor of the courthouse as she immediately notified the district police department.
Joseph then hid outside the courthouse and when he saw a young college woman who was acting as an interpreter, he also grabbed her buttocks from behind. But as he tried to run away again, he was finally apprehended police who took him into custody.
It is understood that he has a long track record of sexual harassment committed after drinking for which he was being prosecuted by the Shilin Prosecutor's Office. On Jan. 4, Joseph was arrested for violating the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act after he reportedly groped the breasts and buttocks of a number of Taiwanese women walking down an alley next to a Zhongshan MRT Station exit in Taipei. His latest acts will be added to the existing list of charges for sexual harassment.

人際關係
How to make instant connections
Posted by: Team Tony tonyrobbins.com
Rapport is created by a feeling of commonality. When we have something in common with someone, we feel more comfortable. The more comfortable we feel, the more we enjoy ourselves. And the more we’re enjoying ourselves, the more we enjoy the company of others. Sounds like a great way to make new friends, right? That’s because it is!
Now, most of the time, we use our words to build rapport. We do this by asking questions, like “Where are you from?” and “What do you do?” But words are only 7% of how we communicate. If words were graded on how well they communicate mood and feelings, their parents would never see the report card.
Ninety-three percent of who we are, and what we respond to, is nonverbal. And because we gravitate towards those like us, or those who are what we aspire to be, a great way to create rapport is to match and mirror the people we meet.
If their energy is high, increase yours to match. If their energy is low, level yours off to show you’re of kindred mind and spirit. Talk with your hands if they do. Raise or lower your voice with theirs.
You can mirror people’s methods of touch. Match the strength or delicacy of their handshake. Reciprocate an encouraging shoulder pat and you’ll communicate more than words can.
Use your sensory acuity to determine someone’s proximity boundaries. Remember that people who invade your space may need that to create rapport for themselves. If more space is needed, accommodate that.
Breath mirroring is easy to do, and it stabilizes comfort while creating a more intimate connection in any situation.
Posture, facial expressions, tempo and tone – the list goes on and on. Nod your head in conversation if you notice your partner does so. Cross your legs with theirs. Even speak slower if they take more time with their words, or faster if they like to hold conversations in the speed lane. (Watch the full video from Tony.)
They won’t be able to tell why they like you, but they will!
People in politics employ these techniques often. Hillary Clinton’s anonymous Chipotle run revealed her preference for the burrito bowl, but it also represented an exercise in mirroring. By strolling into a chain restaurant sans security or entourage, she hoped to create rapport through mirroring the casual lunch routine of many Americans.
Many politicians use this strategy to convey closeness with voters. We make snap judgments on people based on their style first. And initially, the style of your body language and demeanor will be more influential than the substance of what you say.
Do these long enough, and eventually your counterpart will begin mirroring you. This is called pacing and leading.
We naturally mirror those we feel a connection to, but the reverse has proven just as powerful. And we can organically stimulate that meaningful connection in others by initiating the process ourselves. This turns everyday interactions into an experience that leaves people with a lasting, positive impression of you. And just as importantly, you with a lasting, positive impression of them.
