Secrets to Success   BY VICTOR STACHURA

What is it that makes people successful and I mean really successful compared to you or me? Are they smarter or do they work harder? Are they risk takers or have powerful and influential friends?

Decide upon Your True Dreams and Goals: Write down your specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.

Write down my dreams and goals? Develop a plan to reach them? You mean like a project plan? Yes, that’s exactly what this means. You may have heard the old adage: A New Years resolution that isn’t written down is just a dream, and dreams are not goals.

Goals are those concrete, measurable stepping stones of achievement that track your progress towards your dreams. My goal is to start a second career as a freelance writer – what are your goals?

Take Action. Goals are nothing without action.

Be like Nike and “Just do it”. I took action by reaching out and started writing. Every day I try to take some action towards my goals. It may be small, but it’s still an action. Have you taken action towards your goals?

Never Stop Learning: Go back to school or read books. Get training & acquire skills.

Becoming a life long learner would benefit us all and is something we should instill in our kids. It’s funny that once you’re out of school you realize how enjoyable learning can be. What have you learned today?

Be Persistent and Work Hard: Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.

I think every story of success I read entails long hard hours of work. There is no getting around this and there is no free lunch. But, if you’re working towards something that you’re passionate about, something you love – then is it really work?

Learn to Analyze Details: Get all the facts, all the input. Learn from your mistakes.

I think you have to strike a balance between getting all the facts and making a decision with incomplete data – both are traits of successful people. Spend time gathering details, but don’t catch ‘analysis paralysis’.

Focus Your Time And Money: Don’t let other people or things distract you.

Remain laser focused on your goals and surround yourself with positive people that believe in you. Don’t be distracted by the naysayer’s or tasks that are not helping you achieve your goals.

Deal And Communicate With People Effectively: No person is an island. Learn to understand and motivate others.

Successful people develop and nurture a network and they only do that by treating people openly, fairly and many times firmly. There is nothing wrong about being firm – just don’t cross the a-hole line. How do you deal with people?

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’: A Legitimately Scary Story
star2.com

Directed by Jung Bum-shik – a masterful horror director who made Epitaph – the movie Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum follows seven people who meet up via a YouTube project to explore what is supposed to be the most haunted place in Korea.

Ha-jun, who runs a YouTube channel that deals with the supernatural, leads the team of youngsters to the Gonjiam asylum and the mysterious room 402, which is supposed to have never been opened since the hospital closed decades before.

Despite the rumours that the place is cursed, Ha-jun and his team strap on cameras and plunge into the darkness surrounding the battered building.

The movie has a clear goal – to suck the audience into the “reality” of the film, to make them feel like they are really there.

None of the cast is an established actor, with most of them making their first appearance on the silver screen. They even use their real names, except Moon Ye-won, who uses her English name Charlotte.

This was a deliberate choice to make it seem more like the audience is actually watching footage shot and streamed online by the seven adventurers – and most of it actually was shot by the actors playing them. The lack of sound effects and music add to the naturalistic effect.

The blur between fiction and reality works well, but the problem is that it has been done before, and done well, several times since The Blair Witch Project popularised it in 1999.

As the pioneer in the genre, Blair Witch had the potential to trick the audience to thinking it might be real. But this is 2018, and the found-footage, fake documentary approach is no longer fresh, nor is it as effective as it was.

Despite this, the movie does a good job of getting into your head. From the awkward interactions between those who just met, the vanity of internet fame, and greed and obsession the characters accurately depict.

Sometimes the actors go over the top, but the characters are appearing in a live-streamed internet show, and wannabe stars do tend to get a little weird in front of a camera.

Overall, the film still does a good job of making you believe that you are actually there in the dark asylum. The third act is drawn out, to the extent that it feels like it’s too much, but it’s still effective.

A lot of the horror is in the unknown, which is a double-edged sword: The viewers are encouraged to imagine their own demons, but this can mean that the film’s actual horrors are less scary once they are shown.
