Is Life Better Staying Single or Getting Married? medindia.net

Freedom for Singles

There have been many cases where married people had to give up personal interests in order to accommodate other responsibilities. But for singles, personal hobbies and interests do not take a back seat. There is enough time to hone and pursue new skills and passions, thus constantly reinventing oneself into a new person who can follow dreams without interruption.

Singles also enjoy the freedom to take decisions without much hassle. They do not need consensus from all corners of the house before embarking on any major assignment or work.

Better social network

In the age of technology, there are so many things to handle that time constraint is a big hurdle. Staying connected with all is one big challenge in itself. With so much agenda on the platter, social networking gets hindered at times for married people. But singles are independent to travel anytime, anywhere to improve upon their connectivity. Research has proved that marriage leads to less contact with parents and friends compared to remaining single.

Problems of Staying Single

Singles are Lonely, Lack Social Security and Support

Staying single can bring in loneliness and can push people towards depression. It may not be possible for singles to find suitable company according to their timing and wish. And at these moments when they find no one trustworthy to spend time with them, they can very easily slip into the phase of depression.

Singles’ Economic Problem

When married, if one partner is not able to work or earn enough money, the other partner can pitch in. But for singles, earning your bread and butter even when the body or mind is exhausted can be a big challenge. Earning money single-handedly can put a lot of pressure at times, pushing the person towards serious addictions, depression and other health problems.

3 Steps to End Any Argument
huffingtonpost Shannon Kolakowski

Arguments are a normal part of life -- it's certainly not expected that you never disagree with the people that you care about. But what can help is finding a way to disagree that doesn't drive a wedge between the two of you. Wouldn't it be a relief if there were a way to end an argument more effectively, bringing the two of your towards a common ground?

1. Ask. This step involves taking a step back from the argument and asking the other person to let you summarize their position to make sure you understand it correctly. You might say, "Let me make sure I understand where you're coming from," or "I want to make sure I'm hearing your point of view correctly." Then, paraphrase what you believe is the issue based on their point of view. This may seem counter-intuitive at first, because typically in an argument you are trying to make a case for your side. But that's exactly why it's so effective. When people argue, they are desperately trying to get their perspective heard. So when you stop explaining your side -- and start listening to their side -- it makes the conversation much more manageable. By ending the power struggle to be heard, it allows the other person to feel less defensive.

2. Validate. After you correctly identify the person's perspective about the problem, the next step is to validate how they feel about the problem. Validating doesn't mean you have to agree with the other person's perspective, but it does show that you know where they're coming from. You might say, "I can see how you'd feel that way," or "It makes complete sense that you'd feel that way given the situation." To do this, focus on the parts of the other person's argument that are legitimate and that you can relate to. Showing that you understand where he or she is coming from allows the other person to let their guard down, and makes them more likely to be willing to look at things from your perspective.

3. Join. The last step is essential. This is where you join with the other person, showing the other person that you both ultimately want the same thing: to resolve the conflict and maintain the relationship. You might say something like, "We're on the same side here, not against each other. I want to work this out together." By brining up the fact that your relationship is more important than the argument, it puts things in perspective. Yes, the issue at hand is important to you both, but your relationship together is ultimately what really matters. Joining with the other person also defuses the angry emotions or coldness that might be building, because it reminds you both that you do care for each other.
Q:
How to end any argument?
Are arguments good for relationship?
How to relive your anger?
How to avoid offensive words?
What are the things to do when you feel extremely angry?
How to be mad at the one you love?
How to avoid conflicts with others?

Ugly fruit and vegetables against food waste   By Martha Cliff dailymail.co.uk

It is well known that we eat with our eyes as well as our stomach, however one French supermarket is attempting to re-educate our perspectives on lumpy, ugly, misshapen fruit and vegetables with a new initiative.

The third largest supermarket chain in France Intermarché, launched a campaign earlier this year that sought to put an end to food waste.

Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables celebrates the 'ugly' produce that is often thrown away by growers and considered unfit for consumption.

Intermarché wanted to help prevent food waste by proving to customers that unattractive fruits and vegetables are just as delicious as their pristine counterparts.

The campaign follows the news that we throw 300 million tons of food away each year, encouraging the European Union to make 2014 the year against food waste.

The campaign by Intermarché is supported by advertising agency Marcel who, with the help of  photographer Patrice de Villiers, produced seven posters starring the unattractive produce to go alongside it.

The posters included images of the grotesque apple, the ridiculous potato, the hideous orange, the failed lemon, the disfigured eggplant, the ugly carrot, and the unfortunate clementine.

For de Villiers the most important part of the process was giving character to the greens.

She told the Fast Company: 'The most vital element was ensuring the "strange but lovable" theme shone through I spent time observing our uglies trying to find the precise angle which showed both their "ugliness" and their loveliness, finding their unique character.'

Smart Women Marry Rich, Says New Book   By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES

At least according to a new book, "Smart Girls Marry Money: How Women Have Been Duped into the Romantic Dream -- and How They're Paying for It."

The book confirms what mothers have been telling their daughters for generations: "Girls are told at their mother's knee: "It's just as easy to love a rich man as a poor man." Or, "No Romance without Finance." And, "Marry the one you can live with, not the one you can't live without."

Many women would agree that one good man in the boardroom is better than two in the bedroom.

Such was the case with Ginger Borgella, a 29-year-old Maryland therapist who writes the blog, "Girls Just Want To Have Funds."

"How a man treats his finances -- if he is not willing to honor his debts and obligations -- is an indicator of how he will treat you in the marriage," she told ABCNews.com.

"I want a man who is financially savvy," said Borgella, who asked to see her prospective husband's credit report.

That report wasn't perfect, but the couple made a mutual plan to establish financial security and have now been married since 2006 and own their own house.

"I don't want to be broke," said Borgella. "I'm not Paris Hilton, but I lead a comfortable life."

"Smart Girls Marry Money" is a satirical self-help guide is written by two middle-aged professionals scarred by their first marriages.

They aim their advice squarely at nubile girls who have falsely equated romantic love with happiness.

Why are girls are encouraged to court the man with the "big blue eyes" rather than the one with the "big green bankroll?" they ask.

Both authors -- Los Angeles mothers Daniela Drake and Elizabeth Ford -- say they "married for love, but reaped the consequences."

Inside Taiwan’s Booming Funeral Business  By Lee Seok Hwai – Straits Times Indonesia

Taipei. Madam Yuan Cheng-yi, 44, is a make-up artist. But
her clients are neither celebrities nor models and her workplace is a morgue.

The soft-spoken mother of two sons belongs to a rare breed of mortuary make-up artists who are entrusted with the task of helping the dead depart with dignity. There are only about 30 of them in Taiwan.

The work is tough, said Yuan.

“Our job is a perpetual race against time, before the bodies start to decompose,” she said.

“It’s hard work. You’re on your feet for 10 to 20 hours for each case.”

The work is also never over.

“We are always on stand-by – one call and it’s off to work,” she added.

She recalled handling the case of two crew members of a helicopter that had crashed during a rescue mission after Typhoon Morakot devastated southern Taiwan in August 2009.

“One of them had a large chunk of his head sliced off. As for the other, his legs had broken into several pieces,” she said.

It took her 13 hours – minus about five minutes to gulp down some food – to make the two men presentable enough to don funeral robes.

Yuan was a professional make-up artist before she switched to tending to the dead, a job she has been doing for more than six years.

She works for Lung Yen, a leading funeral service company, and handles up to 20 cases a month.

In Taiwan, servicing the dead is a thriving $2.7 billion a year industry that is built on tradition and, increasingly, on corporate management and novel services.

Deeply ingrained with the traditional Chinese reverence for the dead, Taiwanese families spend an average of NT$380,000 on complex funeral and burial rites for their loved ones – a small fortune considering that the average monthly salary is NT$40,000.

The funeral process – from the mortuary to the wake, and then cremation – can last between 10 and 14 days, considerably longer than that in other Chinese- speaking regions.

Power Can Get You Anything Including Money

Read a book about Richard J Daley, Jimmy Hoffa, or watch House of Cards and you will understand. When you come into power, you acquire a certain amount of wealth, but with more power, money becomes less relevant. Contrary to popular belief, money is not everything that it is chalked up to be.

"Money is the McMansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after ten years. Power is the old stone building that stands for centuries. It is hard to respect someone who does not see the difference." Basically, Power, when earned, lasts far longer whereas money can disappear quickly and yield no influence.

Power is more influential than money.

Money is influential, but money is only as strong as the economy, so it can fluctuate. True power will last regardless of other factors. Also, money is easier to obtain than power. Power is true dominance over others, whereas money is just a medium of trade. Power is more influential than money.

Self Improvement Tips   Never give up. Never, never give up!

It was the 1870's. Somewhere in a workshop in New Jersey, Thomas Alva Edison was burning the midnight oil, trying to create a light bulb.
He tried several experiments - all without success. He just couldn't get it right. His failures became the talk of the town and the story goes that after he had failed for the 500th time, a journalist interviewed him and asked him, "Mr. Edison, how does it feel to have failed 500 times? Why don't you just give up?"

"No, no, young lady," replied Edison. "I haven't failed 500 times. I have just discovered 500 ways it won't work. I am so much closer now to finding a way that will work!"

And sure enough, in 1879, Edison invented the filament light bulb, an invention that changed the world. By the time he died, the 'man-who-failed-500-times' had 1024 patents to his credit, and had founded the iconic General Electric company. But Edison's real contribution to mankind went beyond all this. He showed us the power of perseverance, the virtue of learning from your failures, and the magic of never giving up.

To succeed, one must learn to embrace failure, and not be scared by it. Failure holds valuable lessons for us - if only we are willing to learn. Thomas J Watson, the founder-chairman of IBM offers valuable advice: "If you want to succeed, double your rate of failure." Don't dwell on your failures. Don't play the blame game. Don't doubt your ability. Learn from your mistakes. Re-focus on your goals. And keep going.

Very often, we do all the hard work and when we don't see the desired results, we turn around and walk away - even though we may have been just one step away from success. The problem is, we seldom realize we are just one step away from achieving our goals. In the highway of life, there are no milestones telling us that success is one kilometer ahead. Jacob Riis, a photographer-cum-journalist summed it up well when he said, "When nothing seems to work, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it - but all that had gone before."

And yet as adults, we forget that lesson. We are scared to take the first steps, because we are scared we might fail. And the first time we taste failure, we give up. A group of school children once asked Sir Winston Churchill what he thought was the secret of success. Churchill's response? Just seven words. "Never give up. Never, never give up!"

Will an apple a day keep the doctor away? by Amy Hunter

An apple a day can reduce the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and many types of cancer. But would you be able to avoid the doctor entirely just by eating a bunch of the forbidden fruit? Not likely. Various studies show health benefits when participants eat an apple between three and five times a week, but all ailments cannot be cured by diet alone.
Are other fruits just as good for you as apples? Sure. All fruits are loaded with nutrients that are building blocks to good health. Bananas are loaded with potassium, which is important for a healthy heart and proper muscle function. Blackberries are loaded with fiber, and strawberries contain vitamin C and fiber.
Like cranberries, blueberries help prevent and fight urinary tract infections. They're also a bit tastier than cranberries, which most people only enjoy when combined with plenty of added sugar. Apricots, fresh or dried, are high in beta-carotene.
When choosing drinks, apple juice barely makes the top 10. Pomegranate juice, wine and purple grape juice are high in antioxidants, with apple juice in the tenth spot, right behind tea. One of the things that makes apples so incredibly healthy is the amount of fiber they contain, but that's lost during juicing.
If all fruits are nutritional powerhouses, why are apples the only one to be included in the folklore? At the time the adage emerged, apples were easy to grow (and still are). Once harvested, they could remain in storage for nearly a year. Recent studies have shown that, unlike many fruits and vegetables, the nutritional benefits of apples remain relatively stable as long as 200 days after harvest [source: Boyer and Liu].
While an apple a day will go a long way toward keeping the doctor away, most nutritionists recommend a varied diet. In addition to apples, fill your shopping cart with citrus fruits, tropical treats like mangos, and a variety of berries, which pack a nutritional punch. Eating several servings of a varied selection of fruits each day is truly the best way to keep the doctor away.

Ways to Reverse a Bad First Impression   realsimple.com

Turn Around

My research has shown that women and men tend to orient their bodies differently when talking to each other. Women typically face one another and look steadily at each other's faces; they feel like this shows that they're friendly. But when faced directly, men tend to feel that they're being closed in on. Men generally sit at angles or even parallel to each other, only occasionally glancing at each other's faces, which may seem rude to women. If you sense that you've made a bad impression with someone of the opposite gender, engage him differently the next time: Change the way you're positioned and notice whether you're maintaining your gaze or looking at him only now and then—it may alter how he thinks of you.

Let Your Guard Down

Most of the people I advise lead very busy work lives, so they are often preoccupied. I've had clients brush off an important person or use a brusque tone with someone they've just met just because they were in a hurry. I encourage clients to proactively follow up and say to the person they rubbed the wrong way, "I was distracted because of a looming deadline. I'm sorry about our last run-in, and I would love to grab a coffee. I want you to know how happy I am to meet you." People appreciate the authenticity of an apology and the personalized attention that comes with it.

The Process of Dying  from T.LOBSANG RAMPA's book  "Chapters of Life"
People actually associate pain and death, or if you prefer, death and pain, because in the majority of cases people who are grievously (alvorlig) ill die apparently in pain, but that pain, remember, is not the pain of death but the pain caused by the illness itself.

Perhaps there is a cancer, something affecting body organs, grasping at nerve endings or eating them away. But let us remember that this pain is the pain of the illness, the pain of the complaint, not death itself.

Death, the actual state of transition from this world to the next, the actual state of leaving this physical body, is a painless process because of the anaesthetical properties, which come to most bodies at the moment of death. Some of us know what it is to die and to remember everything, and to come back still remembering. In the process of dying we have a body which is ailing, functions are failing.

But remember this, the functions are failing, that means the ability to perceive or apperceive or to comprehend pain impulses is failing also. We know that people sometimes give an impression of pain at dying, but this again is an illusion.

The dying body is a body which has usually (except in the case of accident) reached the end of its endurance, it can go no more, the mechanism is failing, there is no longer the ability for metabolic processes to renew failing organisms. Eventually the heart stops, the breathing stops. Clinically a person is dead when no breath condenses on a mirror held before the lips; clinically and legally a person is dead when there is no longer a pulse or a heart - beat.

People do not die on the instant, however. After the heart has ceased to beat and after the lungs have ceased to pump, the brain is the next to die. The brain cannot live long without its precious supply of oxygen, but even the brain does not die instantly, it takes minutes. There have been absolutely authenticated cases where people have been beheaded, and the head, severed from the body, has been held up for public inspection. The lips have continued to move and a lip reader can distinguish the words being formed.

Obviously only a lip reader can interpret what is being said because there can be no speech when the neck has been cut and the supply of air from the lungs terminated. It is the air supply going past the vocal chords, which makes the sound.

After the brain has died, after the brain is no longer capable of functioning through this lack of oxygen, the rest of the body dies slowly. Various organs die throughout a day or so. At the end of three days the body is just a lump of decomposing protoplasm, but the body does not matter, it is the immortal soul that matters - the Overself.

Who is to blame for skyrocketing prices on Taipei’s real estate market? Global Times

In the run-up to the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) between China and Taiwan, Taipei’s real estate prices have been skyrocketing. With very low taxation and investors anticipating Chinese companies to be allowed to set up branch offices and to buy property in Taiwan, Taipei houses have become a tool for speculation.

It is the prevalent public perception that there is a direct connection between ECFA, the imminent arrival of Chinese real estate traders and soaring housing prices.

Yet contradicting mainstream opinion, mainland speculators aren’t going to be active on the Taiwan market. Even after the signing of the pact, heavy restrictions for mainland buyers will remain. ECFA is unlikely to change this. Apart from hindering regulations, China’s own realty market is seen as more lucrative than the Taiwanese for Chinese speculators.

If there’s potential for Chinese investment, experts see it in the commercial rather than the residential property market. That particularly the latter shows signs of overheating is the result of investments done by returning Taiwanese businessmen who made huge fortunes in China.

Taipei’s realty brokerage firms report that ‘taishang’, as these businessmen are commonly called in Mandarin, often purchase seven or eight luxury housing units in one go.

“Purchases of high price real estate are not because of the mainlanders, it’s the Taiwanese investors. They buy because of unfairly low taxes”, says Chang Chin-oh, professor for land economics and member of Land Bank of Taiwan’s board of directors in an interview given to Asia Times Online.  “Mainland Chinese speculators won’t do much in Taipei since there are too many restrictions. And first and foremost, there simply is much more money to be made on the mainland market.”
