How Caring for a Dog Helps You Cope with Depression, Anxiety, and Stress
Helpguide / Lawrence Robinson and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D.

If you've ever owned a pet, you already know how much fun and affection they can bring. But did you know that pets also come with some pretty powerful mental and physical health benefits? Dogs in particular can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and playfulness, and even improve your cardiovascular health. Caring for a dog can help children grow up more secure and active or provide valuable companionship for older adults. Perhaps most importantly, though, a dog can add real joy and unconditional love to your life.
How can dogs help you cope with depression, anxiety, and stress?

More than any other animal, dogs have evolved to become acutely attuned to humans and our behavior and emotions. While dogs are able to understand many of the words we use, they’re even better at interpreting our tone of voice, body language, and gestures. And like any good human friend, a loyal dog will look into your eyes to gauge your emotional state and try to understand what you’re thinking and feeling (and to work out when the next walk or treat might be coming, of course).

While most dog owners are clear about the immediate joys that come with sharing their lives with canine companions, many remain unaware of the physical and mental health benefits that can also accompany the pleasure of playing with or snuggling up to a furry friend. It’s only recently that studies have begun to scientifically explore the benefits of the human-animal bond. The American Heart Association has linked the ownership of pets, especially dogs, with a reduced risk for heart disease and greater longevity.
Studies have also found that:

Dog owners are less likely to suffer from depression than those without pets.
People with dogs have lower blood pressure in stressful situations than those without pets. One study even found that when people with borderline hypertension adopted dogs from a shelter, their blood pressure declined significantly within five months.
Playing with a dog or cat can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax.
Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels (indicators of heart disease) than those without pets.
Heart attack patients with dogs survive longer than those without.
Pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets.

One of the reasons for these therapeutic effects is that dogs fulfill the basic human need to touch. Even hardened criminals in prison have shown long-term changes in their behavior after interacting with dogs, many of them experiencing mutual affection for the first time. Stroking, hugging, or otherwise touching a loving animal can rapidly calm and soothe us when we’re stressed or anxious. The companionship of a pet can also ease loneliness, and most dogs are a great stimulus for healthy exercise, which can substantially boost your mood and ease depression.

Signs That Your Partner Lacks Emotional Intelligence
psychologytoday

People with high emotional intelligence, or "EQ," tend to make better relationship partners. Does your partner have high EQ? Consider these 12 signs that someone lacks emotional intelligence:

1. Unable to control their emotions.

Emotionally intelligent people are able to regulate and control their emotions. If your partner is prone to lashing out in anger—or gets over-the-top giddy for no reason—he or she likely lacks this core element of EQ.

2. Clueless about your feelings.

The ability to read others’ nonverbal emotional cues, such as facial expressions, is a critical component of EQ. If your partner can’t read your obvious displeasure, or thinks that your happiness is really contempt, there will be problems making emotional connections.

3. Can’t maintain friendships.

High-EQ individuals have strong networks of friends and acquaintances. If your partner is unable to make or maintain good relationships with friends and colleagues, this is an indicator of low EQ.

4. Always has a “poker face.”

While reading others’ emotions is important for EQ, so is the ability to express your own. If you can never tell how or what your partner is really feeling (especially if you are generally good at reading others’ emotions), it’s likely that your partner is missing this key element of emotional intelligence.

5. Is emotionally inappropriate.

Making jokes at a funeral; getting angry over nothing; not realizing that he/she is angering someone—these are signs that your partner doesn’t understand the social workings of emotions and emotional expression, which is another important aspect of EQ.

6. Can’t cope with sadness.

An inability to manage others’ emotions indicates a lack of emotional intelligence.  Low-EQ individuals have particular difficulty in reacting to others’ negative emotions.

7. Can’t really be sympathetic.

Empathy and sympathy involve recognizing others' emotional states and reflecting back appropriate emotional concern. This is a complex skill that suggests high levels of emotional intelligence.

True Generosity: Key to a Lasting Relationship
psychologytoday. Dr. Joe Nowinski

How to Spot a Truly Generous Man

True generosity has nothing to do with being flamboyant or extravagant, qualities that are usually intended to impress. Nor does true generosity mean giving with an expectation of getting something in return. In these hard times -- as well as the ones that may lie ahead --qualities such as generosity can be more important than anything else in making a relationship work.

In assessing a man's capacity to be generous, you need to look at his ability to be generous not only with you, but also with others he truly loves, such as his children, family, and even friends. The truly generous individual tends to bestow his generosity broadly. This does not mean that he is a spendthrift or an extravagant spender. Rather, the generous man gives within his means and does not limit his generosity to material things. He will be capable of being generous with his time and attention, for example. He may be willing to help you out in a time of need. His primary motivation is the sheer joy or comfort that generosity instills in those who are on its receiving end. This is very different from the kind of pseudo-generosity that is motivated by a desire to impress, but that otherwise seems out of character.

The Generous Personality

Generosity is a multifaceted personality trait. Here is a list of those qualities that define the truly generous individual.

    Believes What's Mine Is Yours

The truly generous individual tends not to be highly possessive. He is willing to share what he has. That's not to say he gives away everything he owns. However, he does not hoard the things he owns.

• Demonstrates Altruism

Another mark of the generous man is that he cares about the welfare of others -- both those he loves and people in general. In contrast to the narcissist, life for the generous man is not just about him. He may contribute money or time to charities, he may be a mentor to others who are in need of guidance, or he may "adopt" a needy child from another country, a child he will never meet but whose life he will touch.

• Gives to Give, Doesn't Give to Get

In one form of "pseudo-generosity," a man buys you a gift that he would really like. For example, he buys you a flat-screen television for your birthday, when you know very well that he wants it for himself. Or there's the old joke about the man who buys his wife a convertible sports car: "Once it's in the driveway," the joke goes, "it's yours as much as it's hers." A variation of giving-to-get is Conrad: the man who tells you that he's getting you something and then basically comes out and tells you what he expects you to buy him in return. The generous person will buy you something he knows you will like, with no thought about whether it will benefit him as well, and with no expectation that you will respond in kind.

These are the most surprising things you can buy at Costco
Kate Taylor  businessinsider

Costco is known for its bargains.

But, it's also a place where members can buy expensive steaks, $6,000 doomsday prepper kits, and even coffins.

While the budget retailer is known for its bulk deals, you can drop some serious cash at Costco — if you know where to look.

Here are seven unexpected items you can buy from the retailer that many shoppers may not know about.

Most people probably don't realize that Costco has an entire funeral category and sells caskets in most states. Beyond caskets, which cost $950 to $3,000, the company also sells a variety of urns.

Costco's coffins, sold in partnership with Universal Casket Co., are very well reviewed.

"This purchase took much pressure off the difficult time of dealing with Mom's funeral," a review of the solid five-star-rated Mother Casket says. "She would have loved it, and it was her wish to do this ... Funeral costs are very high, and this product and the people we dealt with were caring and professional."

Doomsday-prepper food kits

Costco sells food kits for emergency situations, with enough supplies to feed a family of four for up to a year.

"The kits range from $1,000 to $6,000 and include a mix of grains, fruits, vegetables, proteins, and dairy," Business Insider's Hayley Peterson reports.

Most of the items can last 25 to 30 years, with food kits packed with things like freeze-dried broccoli, green beans, dehydrated apples, and instant lentils. The huge packages of food weigh about 1,800 pounds and can be stacked up taller than the average man, according to one customer who reviewed the product.

"Enjoy the comfort in knowing you have the essential foods your family will need to survive an emergency or natural disaster!" Costco says on its website.

Costco has vacation packages available to destinations including the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, and Fiji, and even a safari in the South African savanna.

Packages include airfare and hotels, with different locations offering different perks. A visit to the Alsol Tiara Cap Cana resort in the Dominican Republic includes all meals, snacks, beverages, and minibar access for $509 a night. A trip through Lion World Travel includes a spa treatment, a wine tour, and sightseeing trips, with prices starting at $4,399 for a weeklong trip.

If you're shopping for an engagement ring at Costco, you can choose to spend a lot, with options costing up to $103,000.

There are also rings on the less expensive side, such as one choice that clocks in at $780.

Costco's engagement-ring business found itself in trouble in 2015, when a judge ruled that the retail chain willfully infringed on Tiffany & Co.'s trademarks by selling rings bearing the jewelry brand's name.

Is bodybuilding healthy? - Quora

A lot of people look at bodybuilders with the chiseled physiques, low fats, six pack mid-section and glowing golden skin tone and immediately think they're just the picture with health. I certainly feel that bodybuilding is a good endeavor, in basic fact, I know it can be, at least the best way practice together and teach it.

Nevertheless lately, a shocking allegation may be made using the web more often: Some writers say, “Don’t be fooled by outside look! Bodybuilders are not necessarily healthy and bodybuilding competition is not really healthy. ” I’m here setting the record straight about this claim, for the community of body builders and for the whole health and wellness communities around the globe.

Is usually bodybuilding really a health activity?

This has been an important issue, it’s not about to become bodybuilder or to get ripped (unless you would like to), it’s about how regular people of all genders and age can copy most of the techniques from a lot of these physique athletes to remain more successful at achieving their own personal goals, and to obtain leaner, stronger, better and healthier bodies.

Common myths and stereotypes regarding bodybuilders or regarding the true essence with what bodybuilding actually is continue to spread, that will instigate a massive injustice to untold numbers of folks who could enjoy the enormous benefits associated with this lifestyle. Without a doubt, bodybuilding is some sort of lifestyle.

People rely on these Myths: I understand why people rely on these myths and these stereotypes, but the reality is, bodybuilding is that healthiest lifestyle on the globe, if you do it by natural means. By natural, I mean, it should be drug-free, steroid-free, together with hormone free and i also mean sensibly, without extremes and the “win in any costs” attitude.

Many people define Body building narrowly: I think it’s also important to indicate that many people define weight training far too just in one dimension. Bodybuilding is far regarding competition. Contest-level bodybuilding is usually pursued by such a part of the fitness community that it’s virtually a moot denote even bring that will up. More tightly related to the average fellows is weight training/ body building as a healthy discipline and off course a healthy lifestyle.

The Pros and Cons of Being a Highly Sensitive Person - The Daily Mind
By Marisol February 26, 2018
Pros
1. They make more thoughtful partners, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

The highly sensitive person is more aware of subtleties and nuances in another person’s behavior. They can detect discomfort or distress and will find ways to make that person feel more at ease. Their caring and compassionate nature make them mindful of their behavior to avoid offending others.

2. They are meticulous and thorough, and pay extra attention to details.

This highly sensitive person trait is valuable in the right situation. Being detail-oriented delivers products done to the highest standards which is pleasing to clients. It also leads to higher efficiency, eliminating the need to revise sloppy work that wastes time and other resources.

3. They are more creative.

Highly sensitive persons have vivid imagination and respond more intensely to stimuli. They see the world through a larger lens. Many artists, authors, songwriters, and people in the performing arts are highly sensitive and creative, giving them the gift to touch people with their work.

4. They have superb communication skills.

HSPs are deeply perceptive and attuned to other people’s messages, not only in their spoken words but also in their gestures and tone. This sensitivity forges more open exchange of thoughts and ideas.

5. They make good team members.

Their understanding of the feelings of other team members make them think through all aspects of a decision. Being naturally fastidious, they see hidden aspects of a new project or policy that may have been missed by the other team members.

Cons:

1. They are more prone to anxiety, depression, sleeping disorders, and physical conditions if they cannot control their intense negative reactions to a situation or thing.

2. Their extreme sensitivity make relationships strained and difficult because they are easily hurt or angered. A harmless statement becomes an insult, and a mild reprimand is seen as strong criticism.

3. They get quickly overwhelmed if given simultaneous tasks and become less productive.

4. They cannot make quick decisions. They have to think over every detail in a discussion and ultimately take longer to decide.

5. They suffer from emotional deprivation. Their powerful sensitivity and innate reaction to care for other people demands self-sacrifice, leaving them emotionally deprived and empty.

What do Australians really think of homeless people?
By Emily Nicol  sbs.com.au

Today, more than 100,000 Australians are currently homeless and exist day-to-day without a permanent home.

In major cities, such as Melbourne, the number of rough sleepers on the city’s streets has increased by almost 75 per cent in the past two years.

These statistics are significant. But, does anyone really care about the plight of the homeless?

According to a 2015 Salvation Army Poll, four in 10 Australians think that the homeless are ‘lazy freeloaders’, ‘stupid failures’ or ‘not working hard enough’.

These might seem like easy conclusions to those of us who have never experienced the plight of being homeless and the devastating repercussions.

"The process of becoming homeless is traumatic in itself, and with that comes particular behaviours, reactions and high stress situations.”

“If I was homeless every piece of money I’d make, I’d try and find a job, buy some nice clothes, do something to get myself off there” is one conclusion offered by 'Filthy Rich and Homeless' participant, Kayla Fenech, at the outset of appearing on a new TV series exploring the issue. Her comments reveal a broad but common misconception that finding a way out of homelessness is just a matter of simply trying harder.

When describing a typical client, Kerri-Anne Williams, who works at two critical support services through St Vincent De Paul, tells SBS that these kind of negative opinions couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“The clients that I work with are probably the hardest workers that I’ve come across,” says Williams. “It may not be in the traditional sense of working 9-5, but in terms of trying to navigate systems, trying to find employment, attending countless appointments, managing health issues and looking after children - while living in crisis, I don’t think there’s ever any chance to rest.”

“One of the biggest issues is being able to get out of homelessness once you are in it.”

Williams describes the challenge to get back on your feet once becoming homeless, as being incredibly tough with red tape impeding the services that should be there to provide support. “One of the biggest issues is being able to get out of homelessness once you are in it.”

The damage to self-esteem and the disconnection from society can have devastating consequences. “The process of becoming homeless is traumatic in itself, and with that comes particular behaviours, reactions and high stress situations.”

This compounded trauma can impact some in worse ways than others. Around half of all rough sleepers in Australia are dependent on drugs and/or alcohol, but two-thirds develop these habits after becoming homeless.

Lack of affordable housing is a major factor driving the rise in homelessness, says Adam Robinson, CEO of StreetSmart – an organisation committed to taking action against homelessness.

“In Australia finding affordable housing is a huge challenge,” says Robinson.
