Japan battles heat wave as 3 confirmed dead, hundreds hospitalized   By Elizabeth Shim

TOKYO, July 14 (UPI) -- Three people are dead and more than 800 hospitalized after a heat wave took over various parts of Japan on Tuesday.

Nearly a week has passed since temperatures surpassed 95 degrees Fahrenheit, The Japan Times reported. A 92-year-old man was found collapsed in a field on Tuesday afternoon, in a town in western Tokyo and later confirmed dead at a hospital.

Between July 6 and July 12, more than 3,000 people were taken to hospitals to be treated for heat exhaustion, Japan Today reported. On Tuesday the Japan Meteorological Agency reported average temperatures in Japan soared from 86 to 95 degrees at 550 of its 928 monitoring locations.

Some areas experienced hotter weather than others.

Tatebayashi in Gunma Prefecture reported the country's highest temperature at 102.74 degrees, followed by 100 degrees in Fukushima City, and 97.34 degrees in Kyoto.

Four schoolchildren were hospitalized after falling ill while playing soccer at a Tokyo elementary school but Japan press reported they were not in serious condition.

Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency official told the public to frequently drink water to combat the heat wave, and to avoid dehydration.

Last week's hospitalization rate was six times greater than the number of people who fell ill in the previous week.

Close to half the people who were hospitalized were aged 65 or older.

Actress Yang Ko-han (楊可涵), 27, died yesterday after 12 days in Cathay General Hospital in Taipei following a suicide attempt.

Doctors pronounced Yang brain dead yesterday at noon and her family donated her organs to grant her last wish — as requested by Yang in a note, Yang’s agency said.

Yang was found hanged at her residence in Taipei on July 6 by her boyfriend, actor Chang Ting-hu (張庭瑚), and was given emergency treatment and immediately taken to hospital.

Beginning her career as a regular on a variety show, Yang in recent years gained celebrity in TV dramas and commercials. Her career escalated this year as she played the lead in a popular TV serial.

Yang’s agency said yesterday that she was a professional and devoted actress but had suffered from depression for years.

Yang’s agency said that it chose to suppress information of her condition while she was in hospital and refused interviews to allow her and her family to recover without disturbance.

The Yang family and her agency expressed gratitude to the hospital staff and the paramedics and police officers who attended her on the day of her suicide, her agency said.

Saying that Yang made a bad example by taking her own life, Yang’s family and her agency called for the public to cherish life and not to commit suicide.

Students the main target of cyberbullying   Megan van Vegten, China Post

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Secondary and high school students are often the targets of cyberbullying, revealed a research survey conducted by the Taiwan Communication Survey (TCS, 科技部傳播).

Cyberbullying has become a social issue of great concern after Cindy Yang (楊又穎), a Taiwanese entertainer, committed suicide after receiving verbal attacks on the web earlier this year.

Social media websites and online gaming chat rooms are where cyberbullying takes place most frequently, said the report. As a result, scholars have suggested that parents take an active involvement and limit their children's access to such platforms, in order to prevent cyberbullying.

A research team initiated a "Taiwan Communication Survey," where nine to 17-year-old children and teenagers were asked about their Internet and media behavior. There were 1,959 completed samples.

The research team consisted of professor Chang Ching-ching (張卿卿) from National Chengchi University and associate professor Tao Chen-chao (陶振超) from National Chiao Tung University. They are both from the communication and technology departments at their universities.

According to the database analysis, 5.8 percent of students have been bullied on the Internet, while 8.3 percent admitted to bullying others on the Internet. Those who cyberbullied others admit to pressing the "Like" button on a status where another student was being cursed at, ridiculed or made fun of.

When encountering cyberbullying, the majority of teenagers choose to ignore the issue, said the survey. The frequency of school bullying and being bullied has been reduced, but cyberbullying has increased, revealed a cross-analysis of the survey.

The study also showed that cyberbullying takes place on Facebook, Pluk and other social media websites 68.7 percent of the time and 42.3 percent of the time on online gaming chat rooms. Instant messaging software and chat rooms are also Web locations where the incidents may take place. About one in every four people experience it.

Those who have a past experience of being bullied in school or on the Internet are more likely to become perpetrators of cyberbulling, revealed the study.

Bullying and being bullied is related to a decline of satisfaction in a child's life. If a child encounters bullying, he or she should seek assistance from the school and or parents, so that parents and teachers may intervene and attempt to resolve the issue, Tao suggested.

Japan: No longer Asia's fastest-aging nation? cnbc.com

"An imminent issue Taiwan will face is population aging, it seems the aging trend is unfolding faster than forecasted," Societe Generale economist Claire Huang said in a recent note.

Huang says the population of working-age residents, or those between 15 and 64 years of age, will shrink 7.3 percent by 2025, above the 7.2 percent contraction expected for Japan. While Taiwan's figure seems alarming, it comes as no surprise; Huang notes that growth was barely above zero in 2014 after hovering below 1 percent for most of the past decade.

In a report last year, HSBC noted that the East Asian 'tigers' (South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore) were expected to age at rates even quicker than that of Japan.

Studies of other population metrics in Taiwan also reveal worrisome trends. Total fertility rates, the average number of children born per woman, were the third lowest in the world last year, according to the CIA World Factbook, 14 places below Japan.

Taiwan's National Development Council predicts the country will achieve 'aged society' status by 2018, which requires 14 percent of the population to be aged 65 or older. By 2025, the council expects the elderly to exceed the 20 percent mark, which will see Taiwan become a 'super-aged society.'

Things You Didn't Know About Dreams  womansday  By Sarah Jio
Everyone dreams—every single night—and yet we tend to know so little about our dreams. Where do they come from? What do they mean? Can we control them and should we try to interpret them?
Dreaming can help you learn.
If you're studying for a test or trying to learn a new task, you might consider taking a nap or heading to bed early rather than hovering over a textbook an hour longer. Here's why: When the brain dreams, it helps you learn and solve problems, say researchers at Harvard Medical School. In a study that appeared in a recent issue of Current Biology, researchers report that dreams are the brain's way of processing, integrating and understanding new information. To improve the quality of your sleep—and your brain's ability to learn—avoid noise in the bedroom, such as the TV, which may negatively impact the length and quality of dreams.

The most common dream? Your spouse is cheating.
If you've ever woken up in a cold sweat after dreaming about your husband's extramarital escapade with your best friend, you're not alone, says Lauri Quinn Loewenberg, a dream expert, author and media personality. "The most commonly reported dream is the one where your mate is cheating," she says. Loewenberg conducted a survey of more than 5,000 people, and found that the infidelity dream is the nightmare that haunts most people—sometimes on a recurring basis. It rarely has anything to do with an actual affair, she explains, but rather the common and universal fear of being wronged or left alone.

You can linger in a dream after waking.
Have you ever woken up from such a beautiful, perfect dream that you wished you could go back to sleep to soak it all up (you know, the dream about George Clooney?)? You can! Just lie still—don't move a muscle—and you can remain in a semi-dreamlike state for a few minutes. "The best way to remember your dreams is to simply stay put when you wake up," says Loewenberg. "Remain in the position you woke up in, because that is the position you were dreaming in. When you move your body, you disconnect yourself from the dream you were just in seconds ago."

Even bizarre dreams can be interpreted.
While it can be hard to believe that an oddball dream about your mother, a circus and a snowstorm can have any bearing on real life, there may be symbolism and potential meaning to be mined in every dream—you just have to look for it, says Harvard-trained psychotherapist Jeffrey Sumber. "The meaning of our dreams oftentimes relates to things we are needing to understand about ourselves and the world around us," he says. Instead of shrugging off strange dreams, think about how they make you feel. "We tend to dismiss these dreams due to the strange components, yet it is the feeling we have in these dreams that matters most," he explains. "Sometimes the circus and the snowstorm are just fillers that allow us to process the range of emotions we feel about our mother and give us the necessary distraction so we can actually experience that spectrum of emotion."
Q:
Do you know the meaning of your dreams? How to interpret your dreams?

Gangs in Taiwan   thenanfang.com

The largest criminal syndicate in Taiwan is the Bamboo Gang with over 1,700 members and 68 branches, followed by the Four Seas Gang with 46 local branches and 726 members, and the Heavenly Way Alliance, with 36 branches and 632 members.

The Bamboo Gang (竹聯幫; pinyin: Zhūliánbāng) was established in 1957 in Yonghe District of Taipei Country (now New Taipei City) by children of refugees from mainland China. The so-called ‘mainlanders’ had fled to Taiwan after the government of the Guomindang (Chinese Nationalist Party) had been defeated by the Communists in the bloody Chinese Civil War (1946-149).

The newcomers were more often than not in conflict with the local Taiwanese population. The Bamboo Gang was initially formed by youngsters who wanted to defend themselves from attacks by gangs of Hoklo Taiwanese. The Bamboo Gang was better organised and more violent than its rivals, and soon it became one of the island’s most powerful criminal syndicates.

While the Bamboo Gang was pro-China and pro-Guomindang, rival Hoklo groups were opposed to the government and had a ‘nativist’ mindset.

The Four Seas Gang (四海幫, pinyin: Sìhǎi bāng), which operates in Shilin and Beitou districts, was established in 1955 and its members are drawn from the Hoklo community.

The Heavenly Way Alliance (天道盟, pinyin: Tiāndàoméng) was founded in 1986 by a group of gangsters who had been sent to jail on Green Island by the Guomindang. They began their illegal business in prison, where they monopolised the cigarette market. Inmates who wanted to buy cigarettes had to go through the Alliance. The gang had a strong anti-Guomindang stance. Their goal was to unite all ‘native’ gangs against ‘mainland’ gangs and the Guomindang.

The activities of Taiwan’s criminal gangs range from protection racket, gambling and prostitution to running businesses such as restaurants, night clubs and construction companies.

旅行能更健康嗎?
Can travelling make you healthier? By Husna Haq BBC

We know certain treats in moderation, such as dark chocolate or red wine, can be good for our health. But could travelling really make you healthier too?
The US Travel Association, the industry’s main lobbying group in the US, thinks so, and it’s willing to drop a few million dollars to prove it. On 16 January the group launched The Travel Effect, a multi-year, multimillion dollar research and marketing campaign to study and publicise the benefits of travel on an individual’s health – as well as the health of the community and the economy. With its science-supports-desire research, the industry is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the wine and high-end chocolate markets, which have successfully convinced consumers that some pleasurable experiences can be good for you.
“What we’ve long known anecdotally, we will now prove through authoritative research: travel has a positive effect on health, relationships, business performance and the well-being of communities,” said Roger Dow, president and CEO of the US Travel Association, in a press statement.
Travel Effect’s first research project will examine the effect travel has on relationships; data and research will be released in February. Subsequent studies will study the impacts of business travel, as well as the effect of travel on private sector development, local communities and the US economy.
Over the coming years the campaign will work with academic institutions and such partners as the American Association of Retired Persons to conduct research on the beneficial effects of travel. In the process, Travel Effect hopes to change the way Americans view travel – and encourage them to do more of it.
So how is travel good for health – or the community or economy? Travel Effect’s new eye-catching website has a few ideas:
One-third of all leisure travellers say they have more sex while on vacation
Students who have travelled abroad are nearly twice as likely as their home-bound peers to complete a college degree and report earning higher incomes, out-earning their peers by more than 40%.
Workers who take time off are more productive, have higher morale and are less likely to mentally “check out” on the job. They also report less stress and burnout.
Each US household would pay $1,000 more in taxes without the revenue generated by travel and tourism
Travel is an economic powerhouse, supporting more than 14.4 million jobs in the US and contributing more than $124 billion in domestic tax revenues.

Happy Foods

To understand how foods can make you happy, it's important to understand how the brain regulates mood. The brain uses neurotransmitters as communication signals to communicate with the rest of your body and to issue its commands. "Beat, heart!" the brain says when it sends octopamine to receptors located in the nerve fibers that make up the cardiac muscle tissue [source: Johnson, et al].

The same goes for keeping our moods stable. Two types of neurotransmitters are responsible for our moods: inhibitory and excitatory. Excitatory neurotransmitters like norepinephrine stimulate our bodies and minds. We get worn out after being amped up for too long, though, and so this type of neurotransmitter can actually lead to unhappiness. Inhibitory neurotransmitters like serotonin exert a calming influence on our minds, in part by counteracting the effects of excitatory neurotransmitters. Ultimately, the best moods are found when there is a balance between these two types.

These mood-affecting chemicals aren't made out of thin air, however. They're created by compounds found in food, and some foods are better at helping neurotransmitter production than others. We'll call these happy foods.

Typically, serotonin is the neurotransmitter most linked to happiness, since you need it to regulate sleep and pain. It's also a powerhouse at counteracting excitatory neurotransmitters [source: Neurogistics].

Foods that aid serotonin production include spinach, turkey and bananas. Spinach contains high concentrations of folate, a B-vitamin used in the serotonin creation process. Bananas and turkey pack lots of tryptophan, an amino acid that's converted into serotonin in the brain. Tryptophan manages to go directly to the brain by crossing the protective cellular barrier between the bloodstream and the brain. This makes tryptophan a rarity, since serotonin can't cross this blood-brain barrier [source: Hyde and Gengenbach].

Another major neurotransmitter that helps regulate and stabilize mood is gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), commonly referred to as "nature's Valium" because of its tranquilizing effects on the body. GABA is produced during the Krebs cycle, a physiological process by which nutrients are converted to energy for cellular use. Foods don't contain GABA, but some contain the neurotransmitter's building block, an amino acid called l-glutamine. Pork, beef and sesame and sunflower seeds all have high concentrations of glutamine [source: Neurogenesis]. Since l-glutamine can also transcend the blood-brain barrier and aids GABA production during the Krebs cycle, these foods can have an indirect but useful impact on your happiness.

Hector and the Search for Happiness   wiki
Hector is a quirky psychiatrist who has become increasingly tired of his humdrum life. He tells his girlfriend, Clara, that he needs to go on a journey to research happiness. On a flight to China, he is seated next to Edward, a cranky businessman. Edward takes Hector to a very exclusive nightclub in Shanghai, where Hector meets a young woman named Ying Li and instantly falls for her.

He asks to meet Ying Li's family. She declines, ashamed of how she makes her living. Their date is interrupted by her pimp, who takes Ying Li away by force. Hector then ventures into the mountains and visits a monastery, where he befriends their leader and talks briefly with Clara via Skype.

Hector departs on a terrifying plane ride to Africa, where a woman invites him to her family's house for sweet potato stew. Hector runs into his old friend Michael, a physician, with his bodyguard Marcel, and later meets a quick-tempered drug lord named Diego Baresco, who doesn't believe in happiness because his wife is unhappy due to her medication.

Hector discovers that Marcel is Michael’s lover, and they are happy. He Skypes again with Clara, who is going out in a fancy gown and seems uninterested in talking to him. He meets a local woman and her family for dinner. His vehicle is carjacked and Hector is kidnapped and locked in a rat-infested cell. When the kidnappers decide to kill him, Hector claims to be friends with Diego to save himself, but cannot prove it. With a gun pointed at his head, Hector asks if he can make one final note in his book about what brings his captors happiness, revealing a pen engraved with Diego's name to the kidnappers. Upon his release, Hector makes his way back to the village where he celebrates with the locals.

While flying to Los Angeles, Hector attends to a woman with a brain tumour. Hector then goes to the beach in Santa Monica and encounters Agnes, an old girlfriend, who is now happily married with children. Hector calls Clara and they break up in an argument.

Agnes and Hector meet with Professor Coreman, who is studying the effects of happiness on the brain. During a lecture, Coreman points out that people shouldn't be concerned with the pursuit of happiness, but with the happiness of pursuit. Agnes and Hector check out a project Coreman has been working on, which monitors brain activity in real time and how it reacts to different emotions.

Agnes is instructed to go into an isolated room and think about three things: times when she was happy, sad and scared. Through his brain-scanning technology, Coreman is able to tell in which order she thought about the three emotions. When Hector takes his turn, he thinks about Clara marrying someone else, about his time being kidnapped, and about Ying Li, but his emotions are strangely blocked. He receives a call from remorseful Clara, who tells him she wants to be a mother. Hector explains what he's learned, that the most unhappy thing he could imagine would be to lose her. Suddenly Hector's brain scan erupts with a flurry of activity, mimicking the colored flags from the monastery and revealing that true happiness isn't just one emotion; it's all of them. Having finally achieved his own happiness, Hector rushes home and marries Clara.
