The ugly truth: beautiful people must pay more tax as they earn more
Australian academics Andrew Leigh and Jeff Borland released research earlier this week confirming what we all secretly suspected: better-looking Australians get hired first, earn more, and marry richer spouses.

Holding age, education, and origin fixed, the hourly wages of attractive people are about 20 per cent higher than appearance-challenged colleagues, reflecting similar conclusions in umpteen overseas studies.

The effect is especially pronounced for men: those with above average looks enjoy household incomes 15 per cent above the average, while more "minging" chaps, as young Brits would say, earn 24 per cent below, a whopping gulf of about $30,000 a year, based on average Australian incomes, wholly owing to nature's arbitrary favour.

The authors said: "The strongest evidence is for females, where there is a premium in spousal income from being rated as 'above average'." And plain women were 13 percentage points less likely to be married, too.

Looks ratings were assigned by door-knocking interviewers conducting the survey. As the authors suggest, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but only at the margin. That is, if your mate believes a girl (or guy) is an 8, it is statistically very unlikely you will consider her (or him) a 4.

If there were one piece of distressing evidence crying out for an evidence-based policy, then this is it. Social justice demands action to level the playing field. It doesn't matter whether the beautiful earn more because their appearance makes them more effective, or simply because employers are aesthetically inclined.

Luckily, economic theory shows how promoting fairness can boost economic growth as well. Levying a fixed, lump sum, annual tax on the beautiful, quite aside from any moral arguments in its favour, would improve the efficiency of the tax system, and ultimately lead to windfall economic gains for everyone.

Unlike normal income tax, which retards the incentive to work, a lump sum beauty tax would have no effect on the decision to work because the beautiful would have to pay it regardless.

The government's own Henry taxation review lends tacit support to a beauty tax by way of reference to land tax, which is efficient because "land cannot move to escape the tax". The same principle applies to looks. Good looking people cannot easily undermine their attractiveness -- and they certainly wouldn't want to, given the massive advantages good looks bestow.

Of course, the same principle could argue for taxes on intelligent people -- who can earn income with far less time and effort than their dimmer peers -- but intelligence, unlike land or beauty, is easy to hide.

Should taxes on intelligent people?

How to make happiness a habit   by Suzy Greaves psychologies.co

We all want to be happy. But there’s no doubt that some individuals seem to have been born happier than others. Why? No one knows. It can’t just be down to genes or environmental factors, or all siblings who live together and share the same parents would have identical levels of optimism and contentment - and this simply doesn’t happen.

Many neuroscientists now believe that by deliberately thinking happy thoughts, we can build new connections in that crucial bit of the brain - and ‘exercise’ it, much as we might improve bodily fitness by running on a treadmill. In other words, by repeatedly focusing on positive feelings and events, we can ‘think ourselves happy’.

1. Notice when you’re happy. Every day, write down five positive things that happen. This will help you to build a happiness habit and make you less inclined to dwell on stuff that goes wrong.

2. Eat healthily and exercise. Basically, anything that benefits your body is also good for the brain. Also, when you care for yourself by keeping active and eating well, you send yourself an important mental message, which is that ‘you’re worth it!’

3. Feed your soul. Basically, we all need to find ways to transport ourselves away from the humdrum so that we can gain perspective on our lives and our problems. Some people find this in religion, others in music, or by being in the countryside, or at the sea, or by visiting ancient buildings or art galleries. Find outwhat works for you. And do it regularly.

4. Never believe that someone else makes you happy. If you do, you’ll always feel anxious that you will be destroyed if the relationship goes wrong. Naturally, having a loving partner increases our contentment, but that’s not the same thing as believing that happiness is utterly dependent on him or her.

5. See your friends. A strong social network is one of the best ways to build happiness. And it’s good for your physical health too.

Does there need to be stricter laws for gun control?

What emergency is there really?

So many people say guns are needed for emergency, but what emergency can't we protect ourselves from without a gun that doesn't of course involve a gun? We have locks, we have cell phones! All we need to do is hide. A knife can't open a door like a gun can. There are better hobbies than shooting things if you want to hunt.

Look at the statistics

If you combine the populations of Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Australia, you'll get a population roughly the size of the United States. We had 30,000 gun deaths last year, they had 112. The difference between them and us is not that Americans are more violent by nature. It is because they have strict gun control laws.

We absolutely need strict gun control!

I HATE GUNS! Yeah, yeah, we have the second amendment, but I personally am not a fan. You don’t not need an assault weapon and 30 bullet magazine clips to mow down an elk. We have to take a driving test to get a license so why shouldn’t we have background checks for guns? Thank goodness Democrats control Colorado state government, so we can actually get something done about the appalling loopholes in our gun laws! After the horrible Aurora tragedy, which occurred here, and the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut, it’s time we start cracking down! A lot of liberals are afraid to voice their opposition to guns, but I’m not! Guns DO KILL PEOPLE! You’re more likely to have a gun used against you or a loved one than to actually have it protect you from an intruder. Gun nuts don’t care about anyone but themselves and their rights. Your right to own a gun ends when it means another American will have to give up their right to life. The only purpose guns serve is to kill. If guns are not a problem then why is the United States the most violent nation in the industrialized world and we also have the most firearm proliferation and guns per capita? Enough is enough!

GUNS KILL PEOPLE

I think there should more gun laws in place because we have the police to protect us. I don't think they should be completely banned but no military grade or fully automatic weapons, just a hunting rifle or a 9mm pistol. There have been to many mass shootings and crazy people with guns we just can't keep taking chances.

I am against gun violence.

Guns are the reason why people are at war. They are the reason that people in gangs shoot each other. They should be outlawed so there will be less violence and fewer deaths. Yes, I understand that the police have to have them, but if guns were outlawed, they would have no reason to have them.

GM foods are good

Genetically modified foods (GM foods) are foods that have been modified using biotechnology. Most known GM foods are pineapples, strawberries and potatoes. GM foods are made to last longer, have more nutrients, taste better and also the crops will have a higher quantity when harvested. Do genetically modified foods do more harm than good? I believe that genetically modified are not harmful because they have been modifying foods for centuries with no known harmful effects.

GMO is the future

Genetically modified foods have been tested over and over again. Never revealing any problems, the test that show rats getting cancer and tumors, where frauds. The lab showed false information. GMO foods are a good chance to increase food production, because it has defenses against bugs already built in. It also reduces the amount of chemicals needed on crops. Another bonus is the one chemical they do use round up doesn't run off into water and breaks down quickly.

They will save the world

All I have to say on the matter is that organic food can't be cultivated in a high enough volume to satisfy the worlds needs without hyper inflation of the price of food. Which is just not an option unless you want anyone aside from North Americans/Europeans to starve. There already is enough people going hungry on a daily basis and I see no reason to add to it. The other problem is the environmental damage. It takes a huge degree more land to cultivate the same amount of organic crop as it takes for a GMO crop leading to more soil erosion more fertilizer and chemical sprays used etc...

Awful

GM seeds and foods can cause risks of toxins that have never been there before. This can cause death of many people, and, Once the mutant genes are out of the bag, there is no going back. Genetically modified organisms contaminate existing seeds with their altered material, passing on modified traits to non-target species. This creates a new strain of plant that was never intended in the laboratory. In North Dakota, recent studies show that 80% of wild canola plants tested contained at least one transgene. In Japan, a modified bacteria created a new amino acid not found in nature; it was used in protein drinks and before it was recalled it cause severe mental and metabolic damage to hundreds as well as several deaths. Japan banned GMOs after this horrific experience. Monarch butterflies have also died after their favorite food, milkweed, was cross-pollinated from Bt corn which rendered it toxic to the endangered species.

The bottom line is that genetically modified organisms have not been proven in any way to be safe, and most of the studies are actually leaning the other direction, which is why many of the world’s countries have banned these items whose DNA has been genetically engineered. In America, they aren’t even labeled, much less banned, so the majority of the populace has no idea that they are eating lab-created DNA on a daily basis.
Q:
Are GM foods good or bad?
Do you think GM foods can cause risks of toxins?
Do genetically modified foods will save the world?
Is it possible that food resource will use out one day?
How to find the new food resources?
Is organic food better for you?
How much do you care about food safety issues?

Can coffee cause cancer? 'Only if it's very hot'
By Kate Kelland, Reuters

LONDON--There is no conclusive evidence that drinking coffee causes cancer, the World Health Organization's cancer agency will say as it downgrades its warning, but it will also say all "very hot" drinks are probably carcinogenic.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had previously rated coffee as "possibly carcinogenic" but has changed its mind. On Wednesday it will say its latest review found "no conclusive evidence for a carcinogenic effect."

At the same time, however, it will say other scientific evidence suggests that drinking anything very hot — around 65 degrees Celsius or above — including water, coffee, tea and other beverages, probably does cause cancer of the oesophagus.

Lyon-based IARC, which last year prompted headlines worldwide by saying processed meat can cause cancer, reached its conclusions after reviewing more than 1,000 scientific studies in humans and animals. There was inadequate evidence for coffee to be classified as either carcinogenic or not carcinogenic.

It had previously put coffee as a "possible carcinogen" in its 2B category alongside chloroform, lead and many other substances.

The U.S. National Coffee Association welcomed the change in IARC's classification as "great news for coffee drinkers."

Processed meats

Unless you are a vegetarian, you probably have ham, bacon, and sausages in your refrigerator. However, you probably didn’t know that the preservatives added to these meats to make them seem fresh and appetizing are linked to cancer. For instance, sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate, which find their way into a range of cured meats, are known to significantly increase your risk of colorectal tumors.

Whenever you cook processed meats like cold cuts in oil, a chemical reaction causes sodium nitrite to bond with amines and produce N-nitroso, a known cancer-causing compound. Studies reveal that N-nitroso is associated with cancers of the brain, stomach, and intestines.

Eating one hot dog – a processed meat – each day raises your risk for colorectal cancer by 20 percent according to a study led by the American Institute of Cancer Research. A separate study by the University of Southern California and Cancer Research Center of Hawaii identified a link between consumption of processed meats and cancer. People who had greater intake of processed meats had a 68 percent higher risk for pancreatic cancer. A research in Sweden found that Swedes who consumed 3 ounces of processed meat a day were 15 percent more likely to get stomach cancer compared to those who ate less of them each day.

To reduce your risk for developing cancer, only choose meat products that are free from nitrites and nitrates. If this is not possible, you can at least limit your intake. Ideally, you should avoid processed meats altogether, as they are high in salt, which increases your risk of cancerous changes to your stomach. But those you should stay away from the most are hotdog, bacon, ham, and salami because they contain the most preservatives and additives, and thus pose the greatest risk in cancer development compared to other processed meats. A healthier alternative is to make your own cooked meats by roasting a joint of beef, lamb, or pork each week to slice for use in sandwiches and salads.

Oil company must compensate for harm to consumers' health

Kaohsiung, June 15 (CNA) The Taiwan Kaohsiung District Court ruled Wednesday that Cheng I Food Co., found during an adulterated oil scandal in 2014 to have used imported oil meant for animal feed in its lard-based cooking oil products, must compensate consumers of the products.

The ruling said that Cheng I Food (正義油品) must compensate to the tune of NT$9.37 million (US$288,000) to a total of 3,123 teachers and students at 23 schools in Kaohsiung and Taichung, who had eaten school lunch meals prepared with problematic lard produced by the oil company.

The company should pay each consumer NT$2,000 in cash in compensation for mental distress, and another NT$1,000 in punitive compensation, according to the ruling.

In a statement, the court said no plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit filed by the Consumer Protection Association of Taiwan (CPAT) have shown any symptoms of illness, sought medical treatment, or have medical treatment documentation of illness caused by eating foods prepared with cooking oil produced by Cheng I Foods.

Despite this, the court still concluded that the company violated the right to health of the plaintiffs, the statement said.

It noted that "although it is difficult to determine the relationship between Cheng I Food products and health damage to consumers, the court decided to adopt a ruling in favor of the consumers."

The court concluded that although Cheng I Foods used substandard oil because it was cheated by its supplier, it should still compensate customers for its mistake.

Kaohsiung District Court spokesman Shih Po-hung (施柏宏) said that even though Cheng I Food itself was a victim, in that it produced lard with substandard oil provided by its source supplier without ensuring that the material was safe for human consumption, it should be responsible for checking the safety of its raw materials.

The civic group devoted to consumers' rights filed the lawsuit with the district court in July 2015 on behalf of teachers and students who ate school lunches prepared by catering service companies.

The CPAT had demanded that Cheng I Food should pay each plaintiff NT$20,000 in compensation for financial loss, another NT$10,000 for mental distress, and NT$60,000 in punitive compensation.

In response, the CPAT said "the ruling is not acceptable" because it is far away from the plaintiffs' expectations. It will decide whether or not to file an appeal after receiving the ruling document, it said.

Cheng I Food made a similar comment, saying that it will evaluate whether or not to appeal after examining the document.

On Feb. 26 this year, the Kaohsiung District Court acquitted the oil company, a subsidiary of Ting Hsin Oil and Fat Industrial Co. (頂新), of criminal charges against food safety. It determined that the company had no knowledge that the oil it used to produce lard was substandard.

Ting Hsin Oil and Fat, Wei Chuan Foods Corp. (味全食品) and Cheng I Food are at the heart of a series of food safety scandals that erupted in October 2014.

Ting Hsin Oil and Fat and Cheng I Food were found to be using ingredients unfit for human consumption, such as oils used in animal feed, in the cooking oil they sold to food processors and to consumers under the Wei Chuan brand.

Mass shooting at Orlando gay nightclub

Orlando, Florida (CNN)— An American-born man who'd pledged allegiance to ISIS gunned down 49 people early Sunday at a gay nightclub in Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting in the United States and the nation's worst terror attack since 9/11, authorities said.

* The gunman, Omar Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, Florida, was interviewed by the FBI in 2013 and 2014 but was not found to be a threat, the FBI said.

Mateen carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the packed Pulse club about 2 a.m. Sunday and started shooting, killing 49 people and wounding at least 53, officials said.

After a standoff of about three hours, while people trapped inside the club desperately called and messaged friends and relatives, police crashed into the building with an armored vehicle and stun grenades and killed Mateen.

"It appears he was organized and well-prepared," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said early Sunday. Authorities said they haven't found any accomplices.

'An act of hate'

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack on jihadi forums, but ISIS sympathizers have reacted by praising the attack on pro-Islamic State forums.

"We know enough to say this was an act of terror and act of hate," President Obama said in an address to the nation from the White House.

While the violence could have hit any American community, "This is an especially heartbreaking day for our friends who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender," he said.

Omar Mir Seddique Mateen was born in 1986 in New York. Most recently he lived in Fort Pierce, about 120 miles southeast of Orlando. Fearing explosives, police evacuated about 200 people from the apartment complex where he lived while they looked through his residence for evidence.

Mateen's parents, who are from Afghanistan, said he'd expressed outrage after seeing two men kiss in Miami, but they didn't consider him particularly religious and didn't know of any connection he had to ISIS.

He was married in 2009 to a woman originally from Uzbekistan, according to the marriage license, but he filed documents to end the marriage in 2011.

Sitora Yusufiy, interviewed by CNN in Boulder, Colorado, said she and Mateen were together about four months, though it took a long time to complete the divorce because they lived in different parts of the country after separating.

Mateen was a normal husband at the beginning of their marriage but started abusing her after a few months, she said. She said Mateen was bipolar, although he was not formally diagnosed. She also said Mateen had a history with steroids. He was religious but she said she doesn't think his religion played in to the attack.

Mateen had worked since 2007 as a security officer at G4S Secure Solutions, one of the world's largest private security companies.

A message posted in Arabic on a dark web site associated with the ISIS news agency Amaq said "the armed attack that targeted a gay night club in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida and that bore more than a 100 killed and wounded was carried out by an Islamic state fighter."

Ways To Attract Positive Energy    wordpress

Here are the Ways to Attract Positive Energy into your life, while boosting your immune system, curing dis-ease, and counter-balancing daily stress:

1.  Love and accept yourself as you are right now.  Start a list to remind yourself of all your wonderful qualities.  Add to it every day.
E.g.,  I am the most positive person I know.

2.  Let go of any and all resentment you’re hanging onto about everyone and everything else.  Stop looking for reasons to criticize and blame others for their acts and omissions.  Let go of your desire to control others.

The past is gone.  It is what it is, and cannot be changed.  Let it go.

3.  Love is the antidote to fear.  If you appreciate the many blessings in your life, and express gratitude for anything and everything, you begin to flow in  a healing bath (rather than languishing in toxins).  Develop an attitude of gratitude by making a list of all the things you are grateful for, including increased health and vitality.

4.  Recognize that you have the power to heal yourself.  That healing power flows from the thoughts you think.  Allow positive thoughts to circulate, eliminating stress and boosting your immune system.

5. Laugh!  Laugh again!  Watch funny movies and recall memories that make you laugh.  Once you access the joy within, let it expand to fill your entire being, crowding out illness and dis-ease.

The Law of Attraction
It all comes down to something called the Law of Attraction, a theory popularized by Rhonda Byrne’s 2006 book The Secret (and, well, Oprah). Basically, it says: “What we think about, we bring about.” It’s the idea that we can attract anything we want into our lives by visualizing our desired results, using affirmations, expecting good things to happen, being appreciative, and taking inspired action.

If you’re seeing visions of Tarot cards, healing crystals, and incense, bear with me! I'll admit that this “law” may sound New Age-y and mystical, but there are actually specific, concrete steps we can take in order to bring positive results into our lives. Consider this the practical guide to The Law of Attraction.

How You Think Determines How You Feel

The most critical thing to understand is that your thoughts matter. Your thoughts create your feelings, your feelings create your actions, and your actions create your life. They’re all interconnected, no exceptions.
Q:
What are the ways to attract positive energy?
Could our positive energy curing disease? Do we have the power to heal ourselves?
What are your wonderful qualities?
How to let go unpleasant past?
“What we think about, we bring about.” Do you believe the idea of the law of attraction?
How to attract good luck?
Do you like watch funny movies? What are the benefits of laughing?
