Would you give your life to save a stranger?
by Newton Shakespeare

Life being unimaginably as precious as one can objectively consider it, is taken by millions of people on an unimaginable global scale each day on this planet. As precious as we consider our existence and the existence of those we care about, would any of you ever give your life for a stranger under the right circumstances? If so, what situation would cause you to do so? If your suicidal, would you consider giving your life to save someone else as a noble alternative?

WWII Japanese pilot is a god in Taiwan              | Taiwan News

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- A small temple in a quiet neighborhood of Tainan holds an unusual secret -- a shrine dedicated to a fallen Japanese fighter pilot from WWII who sacrificed himself to save the area's residents and has since been deified.

During World War II, Taiwan was a major hub for the Japanese military's South Pacific campaigns, and so it eventually became a target of allied bombings as they sought to tighten the noose on the remnants of the Empire of Japan.  On the morning of Oct. 12, 1944, aircraft of the U.S. Third Fleet began bombing the area in Tainan where the temple now stands because it was next to a major military installation used by the Japanese.

Sugiura Shigemine, a 20-year old Japanese fighter pilot, flew his Model 32 Zero to engage the American warplanes in an effort to defend his base against superior numbers. During the course of the battle, his aircraft was struck by allied fire, and it began to hurtle toward the small coastal town. Instead of bailing out and parachuting from his aircraft, he chose to stay inside the plane to steer it away from the village.

Many elderly witnesses can still vividly recall the moment when he guided his crippled plane into a nearby field where it crashed, killing him instantly, but likely saving many lives of the civilians in the town. So intense was the impact of the crash, that his body was only identifiable by his boots. His remains were later recovered by the Japanese military and he was given memorials in Taiwan and his native Mito, Japan.

Twenty years after the war had ended and virtually all Japanese had left Taiwan, a young man in a white cap and naval uniform began appearing to local villagers in their dreams, while others reported sighting him lingering around a nearby farm. To find an answer about the identity of this man, villagers contacted a priest of the nearby Chaohuang Temple, who determined that he was the apparition of a solider who had died in the war.

With his heroic act still vividly in their minds, the villagers decided that this must be Shigemine and they decided to build a small shrine in his honor in 1971. Eventually a temple was constructed called Zhenan Temple and was moved to its current location in 1993 as it grew in fame.
Sugiura became the patron saint of the village and was bestowed the title General Flying Tiger (飛虎將).

Amazing Benefits of Talking to Strangers   By Dr. Mercola articles.mercola.com

Talking to strangers in the store, in your neighborhood or on your daily commute is often a challenge. Most of us grew up hearing our parents say we shouldn't speak to strangers. This is an essential part of keeping your children safe, but it tends to isolate us as adults.

Research demonstrates that face-to-face communication integrates non-verbal cues and involves better turn-taking behaviors, pivotal during social interactions. Unfortunately, our digital age isolates people. Even your social media accounts curate information so it doesn't challenge your world view or expand your horizons.

Self-proclaimed stranger enthusiast and author Kio Stark talks about how this lack of communication between strangers has evolved over time.

In her popular book, "When Strangers Meet: How People You Don't Know Can Transform You," she identifies some of the social obstacles around talking to strangers, the benefits and a plan you can use to improve your opportunities.

How to Talk to Strangers
Stark is enthusiastic about helping you to discover the joys of talking with strangers. She warns there will be people who aren't as open to the conversation as you might hope, but don't give up. Stark calls these interactions unexpected pleasures and liberating moments in your day. You experience greater social meaning and feel noticed when you engage in conversation with others.

By isolating yourself from strangers you may tend to categorize people, as it is a quick and easy way to group others without thinking about them as individuals. These interactions are a significant way you learn about other people and form a bond over a shared experience that you need as much as you need relationships with friends and family.

Your first step is to make yourself available for others to connect with you by looking up from your phone and taking out your headphones. Start by getting comfortable saying "hi" to people you pass in the street or in your neighborhood. Make eye contact and smile.

Once that becomes comfortable, you may branch out to talking to strangers through triangulation. This is a process in which you engage someone by bringing in a third object. You may make a comment about how long the light is taking to change, how much the cost of gasoline has risen as you ride past a gas station or how nice the bus driver was when you entered the bus.

The idea is to talk about something outside of either of you. The next step is to notice something about the other person. You may try offering a compliment about something neutral, such as the person's baby, their dog or complimenting their shoes or tie. These neutral items are a social conduit to engaging in a more meaningful conversation.

Once each of these steps come easily, you may try disclosing something about yourself while you're engaged in conversation. People tend to reciprocate and meet your disclosure with a disclosure of their own. These small truthful statements about your personal life are liberating and help you to connect with other people. This is a step psychologists find improves your mental, physical and emotional health.
