Why Happy People Earn More Money   huffingtonpost.com

Do you want to boost your happiness in order to perform better at work and increase your personal wealth? If so, you need to get a better idea of why happy people are able to earn more money — here are six reasons:
Happy People Take an Optimistic Approach

Employees who are happy tend to earn more money because their optimistic approach makes them more open to opportunity and new experiences, said Lynda Spiegel, a human resources professional and founder of career coaching and resume writing service Rising Star Resumes.

They are willing to accept challenges and take risks, both of which are predictors of greater earning opportunity,” she said. And, they view bad decisions as a learning opportunity rather than a personal failure, she added.

Happy People Have Fewer Sick Days

Happiness might play a role in overall well-being. Happy employees tend to spend more time working and less time out of the office on sick leave. According to research published in Illinois Wesleyan University’s “The Park Place Economist,” happy employees stay home 15 fewer days a year, on average, than unhappy workers — and live up to 10 years longer.

Happy People Are More Productive

Researchers at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England, found a link between happiness and productivity. In their paper “Happiness and Productivity,” economics professors Andrew Oswald, Eugenio Proto and Daniel Sgroi write that randomly selected individuals who were made to feel happier had up to 12 percent greater productivity than those who were not.

Being productive at work has obvious benefits. If your boss notices your productivity, it puts you in better position for a promotion and salary increase.
Happy People Get Better Performance Reviews

Happiness is contagious,” said Idowu Koyenikan, author of “Wealth for All Africans” and principal consultant at Grandeur Touch, a business strategy and human resources consulting firm. “It rubs off on your coworkers and, most importantly, your customers.” For this reason, happy people tend to get better performance reviews, which typically lead to higher pay, he said.

Happy People Invest in Themselves

Happy people earn more because they are always improving themselves by learning more, exercising and investing in their future, said Elle Kaplan, CEO and founder of investment firm LexION Capital.

And investing in yourself can boost happiness as well. “I’ve noticed that my clients are generally happier overall when they invest,” said Kaplan. “This is because investing in yourself is one of the best things you can do for yourself,” she said.

Portfolio Careers: a Trend That's Here to Stay!
 | Jobs.ca   Audrey Neveu

Accountant, writer, lecturer, or professor: we can be all of these at once. More and more workers aspire to having a multifaceted career, several jobs or positions, at once. Called a “portfolio careers”, it is gaining in popularity. Companies wanting to take advantage of the talents of these multi-tasking workers will have to learn to adapt to it.

Though quite demanding, and not made for everyone, the portfolio-career trend is ideal to fulfill someone’s different career aspirations. Some people are content with devoting themselves to their full-time job, but others wish to pursue several goals at once.

This could take the form of a full-time job with perks, or even a mix of part-time, temporary, and contract jobs, etc. For example, a computer specialist can teach programming at a local CEGEP, while giving conferences in their area. An accountant can satisfy their thirst for creativity by running a small jewellery business part-time. According to Marci Alboher, author of the book, One Person/Multiple Careers, many workers make one of their occupations their main source of income, around which their secondary activities gravitate.

A Rapidly-Changing Job Market

While the job market is undergoing major changes, the portfolio-career trend is set to take off. According to a PricewaterhouseCoopers survey among nearly 10,000 people in China, India, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, the greatest wish of 29% of those polled is to take control of their career. Two out of five believe that the traditional job, in which one climbs a company ladder during decades, will soon disappear. Instead, workers will have their own personal brand and sell their skills to those who need them.

This view is shared by human resource professionals, according to another PwC survey conducted among some 480 of them. Forty-six percent of these HR professionals believe that in 2022, at least 20% of the salary mass will be made up of contract workers and temporary employees.

Do you think that portfolio careers is a trend?
Is multi-tasking workers a good idea?

Ways to Promote Yourself Without Bragging
 (by C.J. Hayden, MCC)

There are a host of very dignified and appropriate ways to let a wider audience know how good you are without ever saying so. Here are a few you might try.
1. Writing articles - Putting your expertise in writing and sharing it with publications your audience reads is a powerful -- and very professional -- way to let more people know about your unique talents. Submit your articles to both print publications and web sites that serve your niche and watch your visibility grow.
2. Public speaking - Appearing as a speaker allows you to broadcast your expertise with three different audiences -- the people who attend your talk, the people who are invited by the sponsoring organization but can't attend, and the people you tell about it before and after.
3. Media interviews - Being interviewed by magazines, newspapers, or on radio and television can spread the word quickly about your capabilities. Landing interviews is not that hard to do if you remember to start small. Begin by approaching easy targets like association newsletters, neighborhood newspapers, and local cable programs or talk radio.
4. Testimonials - Whenever you do a good job for a client, ask them to write you a simple thank you note describing what you did to make them happy. Then make their words available on your web site, brochure, or other marketing materials. Let them tell others about your value, and you won't have to say it yourself.
5. Building a portfolio - It's not just artists that should capture their best work to show off in a portfolio. You can collect photos, examples, and other evidence of your accomplishments and display them on your web site, in a marketing kit, or with a PowerPoint presentation. You don't have to sell people on your abilities when they are seeing for themselves what you can do.

Foods That Boost Brainpower (www.prevention.com/health)

Eat these foods for a sharp, young, and healthy mind

Can your diet make you smarter? You bet. Research shows that what you eat is one of the most powerful influences on everyday brain skills, plus it may stave off Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, says Cynthia Green, PhD, founder and director of the Memory Enhancement Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and author of Prevention’s new Brainpower Game Plan book.

The program is based in part on rounding out your meals with key nutrients that (along with exercise and daily brain games) keep brain cells healthy and prevent brain-damaging inflammation.

“Your memory, attention span, and ability to learn will benefit from the healthful foods you’ll be choosing,” says Green.

Curry

Go for Thai or Indian takeout; these cuisines often use the potent spice known to fight inflammation. Animal studies have shown that curry’s active ingredient, curcumin, actually clears away Alzheimer’s-causing proteins in the brain called amyloid plaques (though more research is needed in humans).

Research indicates these antioxidant powerhouses may protect your brain, although the mechanism isn’t fully understood. Some scientists think they help to build healthy connections between brain cells.

Fiber-rich oatmeal, oat bran, brown rice, and so on help stabilize blood glucose (sugar) levels, compared with refined carbs like white bread and sugary foods. Your body digests these simple sugars quickly, so you have a sudden energy spike—and subsequent plummet.

Since glucose is the brain’s main source of fuel, it’s important to keep levels steady; during a crash, you’ll feel tired and crabby and have trouble concentrating.

Every cell in your body needs water to thrive, and your brain cells are no exception; in fact, about three-quarters of your brain is water. A small Ohio University study found that people whose bodies were well hydrated scored significantly better on tests of brainpower, compared with those who weren’t drinking enough.

While chronic, heavy drinking can cause serious dementia, research shows that imbibing lightly may protect the brain. In one JAMA study, people who had one to six drinks a week were 54% less likely to develop dementia than teetotalers. Experts aren’t sure why, but some doctors point out that moderate drinkers have reduced rates of heart disease too. Small amounts of alcohol may protect both the heart and brain by preventing blockages in blood vessels.

Caffeine is another substance wherein the dose makes the poison: In excess, it can cause brain fog, but in moderate amounts, caffeine can improve attention span, reaction time, and other brain skills. A 2007 French study found that women over 65 who drank three or more cups of coffee a day were better able to recall words than women who consumed little or none. Another review showed that coffee drinkers may cut AD risk by up to 30%.

Drink it: Daily, limiting caffeine intake to 300 to 400 mg; an 8-ounce cup of coffee has around 100 mg.

Seafood like salmon, albacore tuna, mackerel, and sardines are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, powerful and versatile nutrients that are essential for a healthy mind. About 40% of the fatty acids in brain cell membranes are DHA, one of the main omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. Experts believe it’s probably necessary for transmitting signals between brain cells.

In a 2006 study, researchers at Tufts University found that people who ate fish 3 times a week and had the highest levels of DHA in their blood slashed their risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 39%.

Pile salads, stir-fries, and side dishes with broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, and brussels sprouts. They’re filled with antioxidants like vitamin C and plant compounds called carotenoids, which are particularly powerful brain protectors.

Antioxidants prevent damage from free radicals, which are waste products your body makes when cells use fuel to create energy. Your brain is especially vulnerable to damage from free radicals because it uses a lot of fuel (it’s only about 3% of your body weight but uses up to 17% of your energy). Since your mind makes a lot of these toxic by-products, ample antioxidants help to disarm and defuse them.

While all antioxidants (from a variety of plants) are good for your brain, these cruciferous veggies are especially effective. A Harvard Medical School study of more than 13,000 women found that those who ate the most lowered their brain age by 1 to 2 years.

They all contain another important antioxidant: vitamin E. In one study, researchers found that people who consumed moderate amounts vitamin E—from food, not supplements—lowered their risk of AD by 67%.

Sweeten your brain-boosting diet with the dark kind (at least 70% cocoa); it contains flavonoids, another class of antioxidants that some research links to brain health. Other flavonoid-rich foods include apples, red and purple grapes, red wine, onions, tea, and beer.

短命的理由
Surprising factors which could affect your life expectancy
By Peter Crush   workplacefocus.co.uk
Enough to lose sleep about
Not getting enough kip? Maybe you should. Those who sleep less than six hours per night (one third of Britons, according to the Sleep Council5), run a 4.5% greater risk of having a stroke. Chronic lack of sleep causes inflammations, elevates blood pressure and heart rate, and affects glucose levels. However, too much sleep can be just as bad. More than 10 hours per night gives rise to increased heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The University of California found those who get seven hours a night have a lower death rate than those who get eight.7
Stay working to stay alive?
It’s often suggested that retiring is not good for people’s lifespan, as staying working (maintaining people’s social groups, and ultimately giving people a reason to get up each day) keeps people alive for longer. This has started to be debunked though, as recent changes to Norway’s retirement age left some in the country retiring at 62 and others at 67, but there were no differences observed in people’s life expectancy. However, all the research indicates that forced retirement (through redundancy, disciplinary or ill-health) does link to shorter lifespan, as it contributes to depression, stress and anxiety.
How happy are you?
This should cheer you up. People have a 35% lower chance of dying if they are content, excited or happy on any given day, according to researchers who followed different groups of people at University College London10. The good news is that as much as 40-50% of a person’s capacity for happiness is genetically pre-determined – which explains why some people can have no money, or lead very hard lives, but still feel happy. In the HR world, happiness is now being closely linked to the topic of ‘resilience’ – the ability of people to cope with difficult and stressful circumstances that could also make them unhappy. Best of all, this is a trait that can be learned too.
Single or married?
Despite the stresses and strains of marriage, research actually shows that being on your own (particularly in your middle years), substantially shortens your life. Studies show single men die almost a decade earlier than married men, with one survey in the American Journal of Epidemiology suggesting that, at any given age, single men face a 32% higher risk of dying compared to married men. Single women face an increased mortality risk of 23% compared to married women. Being married and then getting divorced is no protection either. Divorcees have a 23% higher risk of dying early according to the University of Arizona. One study however claims that men who date women substantially younger than them (between 15-17 years) can cut their chances of dying, while they do so, by a fifth.
Q:
What are the factors that could affect your life expectancy?
Can sleep deprivation shorten your life span?
What are your opinion about this saying “Retiring is not good for people’s lifespan”
How happy are you?
What are your opinion about this saying “people have a 35% lower chance of dying if they are content, excited or happy on any given day.”
Why some people can have no money, or lead very hard lives, but still feel happy?

What are your opinion about these two ideas;
“Studies show single men die almost a decade earlier than married men.”
“One study claims that men who date women younger than them can cut their chances of dying.”

Tired of your quiet routine? How about leaving your computer games behind and taking up an extreme sport?

You can ride a bicycle, right? In that case you're halfway to becoming a mountain biker. All you have to do is take your bike off the road and try some rough terrain. Mountain biking was developed in California in the 1970s and became an Olympic sport in 1996. In the London 2012 games athletes had to navigate a 4.7-kilometre track in less than two hours.

Not challenging enough? Skydivers jump from aircraft at an altitude of 1,000 to 4,000 metres. You have to be fit but there's no age limit with this sport. Dilys Price from Cardiff went on her first jump aged 54. The minute she came down she wanted to go up again. "I was hooked", said Dilys.

Some adrenaline junkies are even bolder – they've invented base jumping, in which people leap from tall structures, such as buildings or bridges, with a parachute. Many of their stunts aren't legal, especially in urban areas. Dan Witchalls has jumped off The Shard - London's 310 metre-high skyscraper - four times. He says: "Base jumping is scarier than jumping out of a plane. In a plane there's no perception of height, but when you are standing on the edge of the building you can see people and cars - it makes it very real."

It seems there's no lack of imagination when it comes to risking life to look cool and get the heart pounding. Surfing, scuba diving, rock climbing… How about turning one of your chores into a daredevil pursuit? 'Extreme ironing' isn't for wimps! Pressing your shirt on top of a mountain could be dangerous, depending on the mountain. Extreme ironing is said to have been created in the 1990s in the English town of Leicester by a man who saw a pile of wrinkled clothes and felt bored. That was Phil Shaw who also won the only Extreme Ironing Championships ever held, in Germany in 2002. For him, the thrill of this sport comes from looking at the spectators' faces. Shaw says: "Sometimes they look confused, sometimes they laugh. It's fun to see how people respond to it."
