Will an apple a day keep the doctor away? by Amy Hunter

An apple a day can reduce the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and many types of cancer. But would you be able to avoid the doctor entirely just by eating a bunch of the forbidden fruit? Not likely. Various studies show health benefits when participants eat an apple between three and five times a week, but all ailments cannot be cured by diet alone.
Are other fruits just as good for you as apples? Sure. All fruits are loaded with nutrients that are building blocks to good health. Bananas are loaded with potassium, which is important for a healthy heart and proper muscle function. Blackberries are loaded with fiber, and strawberries contain vitamin C and fiber.
Like cranberries, blueberries help prevent and fight urinary tract infections. They're also a bit tastier than cranberries, which most people only enjoy when combined with plenty of added sugar. Apricots, fresh or dried, are high in beta-carotene.
When choosing drinks, apple juice barely makes the top 10. Pomegranate juice, wine and purple grape juice are high in antioxidants, with apple juice in the tenth spot, right behind tea. One of the things that makes apples so incredibly healthy is the amount of fiber they contain, but that's lost during juicing.
If all fruits are nutritional powerhouses, why are apples the only one to be included in the folklore? At the time the adage emerged, apples were easy to grow (and still are). Once harvested, they could remain in storage for nearly a year. Recent studies have shown that, unlike many fruits and vegetables, the nutritional benefits of apples remain relatively stable as long as 200 days after harvest [source: Boyer and Liu].
While an apple a day will go a long way toward keeping the doctor away, most nutritionists recommend a varied diet. In addition to apples, fill your shopping cart with citrus fruits, tropical treats like mangos, and a variety of berries, which pack a nutritional punch. Eating several servings of a varied selection of fruits each day is truly the best way to keep the doctor away.

Ways to Reverse a Bad First Impression   realsimple.com

Turn Around

My research has shown that women and men tend to orient their bodies differently when talking to each other. Women typically face one another and look steadily at each other's faces; they feel like this shows that they're friendly. But when faced directly, men tend to feel that they're being closed in on. Men generally sit at angles or even parallel to each other, only occasionally glancing at each other's faces, which may seem rude to women. If you sense that you've made a bad impression with someone of the opposite gender, engage him differently the next time: Change the way you're positioned and notice whether you're maintaining your gaze or looking at him only now and then—it may alter how he thinks of you.

Let Your Guard Down

Most of the people I advise lead very busy work lives, so they are often preoccupied. I've had clients brush off an important person or use a brusque tone with someone they've just met just because they were in a hurry. I encourage clients to proactively follow up and say to the person they rubbed the wrong way, "I was distracted because of a looming deadline. I'm sorry about our last run-in, and I would love to grab a coffee. I want you to know how happy I am to meet you." People appreciate the authenticity of an apology and the personalized attention that comes with it.

死亡過程
The Process of Dying  from T.LOBSANG RAMPA's book  "Chapters of Life"
People actually associate pain and death, or if you prefer, death and pain, because in the majority of cases people who are grievously (alvorlig) ill die apparently in pain, but that pain, remember, is not the pain of death but the pain caused by the illness itself.

Perhaps there is a cancer, something affecting body organs, grasping at nerve endings or eating them away. But let us remember that this pain is the pain of the illness, the pain of the complaint, not death itself.

Death, the actual state of transition from this world to the next, the actual state of leaving this physical body, is a painless process because of the anaesthetical properties, which come to most bodies at the moment of death. Some of us know what it is to die and to remember everything, and to come back still remembering. In the process of dying we have a body which is ailing, functions are failing.

But remember this, the functions are failing, that means the ability to perceive or apperceive or to comprehend pain impulses is failing also. We know that people sometimes give an impression of pain at dying, but this again is an illusion.

The dying body is a body which has usually (except in the case of accident) reached the end of its endurance, it can go no more, the mechanism is failing, there is no longer the ability for metabolic processes to renew failing organisms. Eventually the heart stops, the breathing stops. Clinically a person is dead when no breath condenses on a mirror held before the lips; clinically and legally a person is dead when there is no longer a pulse or a heart - beat.

People do not die on the instant, however. After the heart has ceased to beat and after the lungs have ceased to pump, the brain is the next to die. The brain cannot live long without its precious supply of oxygen, but even the brain does not die instantly, it takes minutes. There have been absolutely authenticated cases where people have been beheaded, and the head, severed from the body, has been held up for public inspection. The lips have continued to move and a lip reader can distinguish the words being formed.

Obviously only a lip reader can interpret what is being said because there can be no speech when the neck has been cut and the supply of air from the lungs terminated. It is the air supply going past the vocal chords, which makes the sound.

After the brain has died, after the brain is no longer capable of functioning through this lack of oxygen, the rest of the body dies slowly. Various organs die throughout a day or so. At the end of three days the body is just a lump of decomposing protoplasm, but the body does not matter, it is the immortal soul that matters - the Overself.
Q:

Who is to blame for skyrocketing prices on Taipei’s real estate market? Global Times

In the run-up to the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) between China and Taiwan, Taipei’s real estate prices have been skyrocketing. With very low taxation and investors anticipating Chinese companies to be allowed to set up branch offices and to buy property in Taiwan, Taipei houses have become a tool for speculation.

It is the prevalent public perception that there is a direct connection between ECFA, the imminent arrival of Chinese real estate traders and soaring housing prices.

Yet contradicting mainstream opinion, mainland speculators aren’t going to be active on the Taiwan market. Even after the signing of the pact, heavy restrictions for mainland buyers will remain. ECFA is unlikely to change this. Apart from hindering regulations, China’s own realty market is seen as more lucrative than the Taiwanese for Chinese speculators.

If there’s potential for Chinese investment, experts see it in the commercial rather than the residential property market. That particularly the latter shows signs of overheating is the result of investments done by returning Taiwanese businessmen who made huge fortunes in China.

Taipei’s realty brokerage firms report that ‘taishang’, as these businessmen are commonly called in Mandarin, often purchase seven or eight luxury housing units in one go.

“Purchases of high price real estate are not because of the mainlanders, it’s the Taiwanese investors. They buy because of unfairly low taxes”, says Chang Chin-oh, professor for land economics and member of Land Bank of Taiwan’s board of directors in an interview given to Asia Times Online.  “Mainland Chinese speculators won’t do much in Taipei since there are too many restrictions. And first and foremost, there simply is much more money to be made on the mainland market.”

Secrets To Make People Like You  by Dr. NerdLove

1) Use Positive Non-Verbal Communication

I can’t stress enough how important non-verbal communication is when it comes to making a positive connection with somebody. The vast majority of our communication isn’t conveyed through our words, but through our bodies, our tone of voice, even the speed at which we talk. In fact, when our body language and our words are at odds with each other, it’s entirely possible to make people incredibly uncomfortable with you and want to get away from you. While your words may be positive, your closed off body language will be incongruent with what you’re saying and leave people feeling uneasy and confused. Many men, for example, have been creepy by accident because while they may have had the best of intentions, their body language made them seem intimidating or even threatening and left people feeling uncomfortable.

2) Get Them Talking About Themselves

Cold hard truth: we’re all narcissistic to some degree. Even when we may not feel like we’re the hottest thing since World War III, we do like to believe that our inner lives and thoughts are fascinating. Just take a look at our social networks as we fill our days with Facebook status updates, Instagraming everything and tweeting about every aspect of our lives. We’re playing to an audience, even if that audience is just the people from high-school that we’ve reconnected with because we wanted to see if they were still hot and/or single.

But believe it or not, there’s a reason for this beyond everyone being profoundly self-involved: as it turns out, talking about ourselves literally makes us feel good. Scientists have found that talking about ourselves activates the same pleasure centers of the brain that are associated with food and money. So in short: we are our favorite subjects because goddamn it feels good to talk about ourselves. And since this fits in with the reward theory of attraction, getting people to talk about themselves is a valuable part of getting people to like you.

3) Ask For Help

One of the most popular tools in the pick-up artist toolbox is the opinion opener, asking strangers to give their opinions and advice about subjects from jealous girlfriends to 80s songs to whether men or women lie more. Part of the reason why it’s so popular isn’t just because it’s a low-stakes way of starting a conversation but because it almost immediately hooks people’s interest. We love giving advice to people.

Do we need more holidays?  bbc

I live in London and I』m looking forward to 4 May. It』s our next bank holiday. We have a total of eight of these in England and Wales. I』m planning to grab a beach towel, some suntan lotion and go to the coastal town of Brighton for the day. Some of my colleagues are happy just to go for a picnic in one of the city』s many parks.

But at sunset after a day of leisure, no matter where we are, we will all be thinking the very same thing: why don』t we have more holidays?

These collective days off work cost businesses a lot of money. A report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research in 2012 suggested that each bank holiday costs the UK economy £2.3bn and scrapping the lot of them would boost annual output by £19bn.

But they admit that this figure might be far from accurate. Actually, it』s difficult to calculate the loss of productivity because some of us compensate by working harder and later. And holidays impact differently in different sectors. A restaurant that caters for employees in the office complex next door will lose a day's trade, but supermarkets will have record sales of snacks on warm, sunny bank holidays. The zoo, cinemas, bars, hotels… they all stand to gain when people idle away the hours.

I think holidays are good for the soul. It』s important to get away from the daily grind and on some occasions a holiday can unite a nation. Ask a Brazilian about their carnival. It』s an occasion in which everyone in the country seems to let their hair down. In Britain, there is sometimes an extra holiday for a royal event, like Queen Elizabeth』s Jubilee. There are street parties and a real sense of community on these special days. Thankfully, another royal baby's on the way. Maybe we'll get an extra bank holiday for this!

How happy are you?  BILL HOWATT theglobeandmail

Happy individuals are better able to enjoy what is good in their life and accept that not everything needs to be perfect in order for them to be content. Happiness ultimately is influenced by an individual’s expectations and perceptions, including their environment and choices.

In 2013, Canada was ranked the third happiest place to live in the world. It was fifth in 2014. This happy ranking was determined by how citizens reported the degree of positive opportunities to experience peace, freedom, health care, quality education and a functioning political system

The research on Canada’s place in the world is a reminder that things could be worse and that living in Canada is much better than many other places around the globe. However, when a person is under stress it is common for them to be focused on their own reality and the big picture. The Globe and Mail’s Your Life at Work Study found that 60 per cent of participants reported high levels of stress in 2014.

Happiness is influenced by an individual’s life choices. Whether someone is born with the personality attributes to be happy or they learn to be happy through positive life experiences and role models, every person is capable of improving their overall happiness or level of contentment.

Happiness is a state of being content but you don’t need to be continually walking around with a smile on your face to be content. Each of us ultimately defines what we want and need to be content in our own lives.

Happiness can be simplistic. Watch any child on a playground. It doesn’t take much for them to appear happy and content where they are.

Happy people are likely to be physically healthy and project hopefulness, enthusiasm and optimism, have supportive networks, and be effective at self-management. They tend to engage in positive diets and exercise, and avoid negative behaviours such as engaging in excessive alcohol use or overeating to feel better.

Researchers have found that 70 per cent to 80 per cent of all heart attacks are due to lifestyle choices and have nothing to do with genetics. This same line of research suggests that happy people are better equipped to cope with stress and make healthier choices than those who are unhappy.

How to Deal with Anger   By Mendy Kaminker

Anger is one of the traits most condemned in Jewish literature. “Someone who gets angry,” we are told, “is like one who worships idols.”  Anger can cause a sage to lose his wisdom, or a person who is destined for greatness to forfeit it.

It’s not hard to see why. When we get angry, we tend to act irrationally. Things said or done in anger are almost always destructive and cause for later regret.

Everyone gets angry occasionally, but some people are more prone to anger than others. They may have a “short fuse” and blow up over small things, or they may be chronically irritable. However it is manifested, anger that is not dealt with in a healthy way is dangerous for the angry person and for those close to him or her.

Dealing with anger is a lifelong challenge, but the results are unquestionably worth it. A person who learns to control, or at least reduce, his anger will be surprised by how greatly his life and relationships improve—at home and at work.

In the letters of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, there are several pieces of advice about dealing with anger. The Rebbe’s guidance ranges from simple, practical suggestions to more advanced meditations that address the root causes of our anger. Below is a loose adaptation of some of these, to study and hopefully put into practice.

The first step is to wait. Don’t express your anger or pride verbally. In this way, those emotions will not gain momentum, as can be seen in practice .

If you feel yourself getting angry, stop, take a deep breath and wait a minute before you react. The anger may dissipate when the heat of the moment has passed.
Questions:
How to deal with anger?
Do you often lose your temper?
What to do if you lose your temper with your love one?
Did you regret after loose temper?
What makes you angry? What are the reasons we get angry?
Do you think these methods work or not?
“if you feel yourself getting angry, stop, take a deep breath and wait a minute before you react.”

woman killed by building debris  The China Post

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- One woman was killed and another injured when a large granite wall slab fell on them from an office building in downtown Taipei, yesterday.

The 40-kilogram slab fell from the fifth floor of the office building on Zhongxiao East Road Section 4. The building is owned by the United Daily News Group (聯合報). The police are investigating the cause of the tile's detachment from the building. The slab was located near an air-conditioning unit that may have been in operation due to the higher temperatures yesterday.

The victim was identified as a 40-year-old English instructor surnamed Wang who taught at a cram school located in the same building. She showed no life signs after being taken to the hospital. The injured victim (surnamed Huang, 42 years old), who was picking up her child from the cram school after office hours, was taken to Taipei Medical University Hospital for treatment.

According to an official of the Taipei City Construction Management Office (臺北市建築管理工程處), construction code violations that result in accidental death will result in a NT$300,000 fine as stipulated in Paragraph 77 of the Building Act (建築法). Improvements to the building facade to meet safety requirements must also be completed within 15 days.

In a statement made by United Daily News Group, the company expressed regret for the incident and promised support for the victims' families. It also indicated that it was continuing to investigate the cause of the accident, adding that repairs on the office walls are conducted annually.

Falling Debris Is Ticking Time Bomb

Area residents, including the borough chief, indicated that many buildings within the area are over 30 years old, adding that falling debris that damage parked cars are a common occurrence. Another incident of falling building debris was also reported in Keelung yesterday, with no reported injuries.

Matters of the Brain: Why Men and Women Are So Different
by Robin Nixon  livescience

Differences that vary

It has been overreported that boys tend to do better at math while girls often excel at reading and writing. In truth, the degree of difference is context-dependent.

In school, girls tend to do better in all subjects, albeit by only about a quarter grade on a four-point scale, Halpern said, citing U.S.-focused research. Boys, on the other hand, tend to excel at tests that focus on areas outside their school's curriculum, she said.

Whether these findings mean schools are biased against boys, standardized tests are biased against girls, or nothing of the sort are among the unanswered questions that rage through psychology, education systems and parenting circles today.

Losing talent

So, if neither sex is more intelligent, why are we so stratified by adulthood? Why, for example, are more than 90 percent of CEOs male and more than 90 percent of secretaries female?

As long as women are doing most of the caretaking jobsin society, Halpern told LiveScience, such as taking care of young and elderly loved ones, they are going to occupy wage-earning jobs that require less time. (In addition to being a research psychologist, Halpern was the founding director of the Berger Institute for Work, Family and Children.)

There is also an issue of interest, she said, in that many young women may not realize that being, say, an engineer can also be a "helping" job.

As a society, we are not only losing talented women from the workplace, she added, we are also losing talented men in the domestic front. Men can be excellent caregivers, and numerous studies have shown the importance of fathering for children.
"We can't have equality in work, if we don't have equality in the home," she said.

Powerful Reasons to Up Your Enthusiasm  by Henrik Edberg

Find out what you really like to do.
This is the most important tip as it can generate enormous and sustained amounts of enthusiasm without you having “to do” much about it at all. Enthusiasm will flow naturally a lot of the time when you are doing whatever you really like to do.
Some examples of such activities may include meeting new people, helping others, go fishing, listening to and talking about music, workout etc.
If you can spend more time doing those activities that make you enthusiastic then you are likely to feel enthusiastic more of the time. Perhaps you can even make a living off one of your favourite activities.

See what’s positive in any situation.
Then build on that to get your enthusiasm going. Perhaps it’s just a thing or two. But that glimmer of positivity can be a starting point to change your perspective to a more positive one where you can find enthusiasm. And whatever the situation you are in will often be easier and more pleasurable to handle.

Get an enthusiastic vibe from other people.
Hang out with enthusiastic people and get them to talk about what they are enthusiastic about. Enthusiasm is contagious, so use that fact to help yourself (and others when you are feeling enthusiastic).

Keep your energy up.
These last two tips are helpful to more easily reach an enthusiastic state and to stay there.
It takes energy to be enthusiastic. So if you are having trouble feeling that emotion then it might be because one or more basic energy problems. So get enough sleep. Eat well and not more or less than enough. Work out. Drink plenty of water.
Questions:
How to keep up your enthusiasm?
How to find out what you really like to do?
What you really like to do? (favorite activities)
What to do when lose enthusiasm for your job?
How to make friends? And how to get along with people?
How to ask help from friends when feeling down?
How to see things positively in any situation?

致富秘訣
Secrets of Self-Made Multimillionaires (entrepreneur.com)

Get Rid of Poverty Thinking -- There's no shortage of money on planet Earth, only a shortage of people who think correctly about it. To become a millionaire from scratch, you must end the poverty thinking. I know because I had to. I was raised by a single mother who did everything possible to put three boys through school and make ends meets. Many of the lessons she taught me encouraged a sense of scarcity and fear: "Eat all your food; there are people starving," "Don't waste anything," "Money doesn't grow on trees." Real wealth and abundance aren't created from such thinking.

Surround Yourself with Multimillionaires -- I have been studying wealthy people since I was 10 years old. I read their stories and see what they went through. These are my mentors and teachers who inspire me. You can't learn how to make money from someone who doesn't have much. Who says, "Money won't make you happy"? People without money. Who says, "All rich people are greedy"? People who aren't rich. Wealthy people don't talk like that. You need to know what people are doing to create wealth and follow their example: What do they read? How do they invest? What drives them? How do they stay motivated and excited?

Work Like a Millionaire -- Rich people treat time differently. They buy it, while poor people sell it. The wealthy know time is more valuable than money itself, so they hire people for things they're not good at or aren't a productive use of their time, such as household chores. But don't kid yourself that those who hit it big don't work hard. Financially successful people are consumed by their hunt for success and work to the point that they feel they are winning and not just working.

Shift Focus from Spending to Investing -- The rich don't spend money; they invest. They know the U.S. tax laws favor investing over spending. You buy a house and can't write it off. The rich, in contrast, buy an apartment building that produces cash flow, appreciates and offers write-offs year after year. You buy cars for comfort and style. The rich buy cars for their company that are deductible because they are used to produce revenue.

Create Multiple Flows of Income -- The really rich never depend on one flow of income but instead create a number of revenue streams. My first business had been generating a seven-figure income for years when I started investing cash in multifamily real estate. Once my real estate and my consulting business were churning, I went into a third business developing software to help retailers improve the customer experience.

Lastly, you may be surprised to learn that wealthy people wish you were wealthy, too. It's a mystery to them why others don't get rich. They know they aren't special and that wealth is available to anyone who wants to focus and persist. Rich people want others to be rich for two reasons: first, so you can buy their products and services, and second, because they want to hang out with other rich people. Get rich -- it's American.
Questions:
How to become a billionaire from scratch?
Do you want to hang out with rich people? And get rich?
How to double (or triple) your current income
What are the easiest ways to get rich?
What do you think about wealthy people?
“Rich people treat time differently” how to arrange your time?
