French Senate Approves Ban on Pageants for Young Girls

By ALISSA J. RUBIN and MAÏA de la BAUME

The Senate passed the new ban 197-to-146 as an amendment to a larger bill aimed at increasing gender equality. The measure now goes to the lower house, the National Assembly, for discussion and a vote.

Pageants are popular in smaller towns across France, though far less frequent and less intense than in the United States. And France has no equivalent of American reality shows like “Toddlers& Tiaras” and its spinoff, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” that feature very young contestants.

Still, the intense focus on beauty here, combined with a surge of images of sexualized, prepubescent girls, has raised fears that the pageants could take on the over-the-top quality of American contests.

It is extremely destructive for a girl between the age of 6 and 12 to hear her mother say that what’s important for her is to be beautiful,” Chantal Jouanno, the ban’s champion, said Wednesday. “We are fighting to say: What counts is what they have in their brains.”

Ms. Jouanno, a former junior minister for environment and a senator representing Paris from the center-right party U.D.I., wrote a report on the “hypersexualization” of children in 2011. The report was commissioned by the health minister in response to public outrage over a photo display in Paris Vogue that featured under-age girls in sexy clothes and postures, with high heels, makeup and painted fingernails. The episode drew attention to the increasing use of very young girls in fashion photography and advertisements.

Opponents protested that the penalties were too severe: up to two years in prison and a $40,000 fine for anyone who “helps, encourages or tolerates” children’s participation in the contests.

Some pageant organizers said they were frustrated by the suggestion that they were corrupting girls. Maud Chevalier, who started Graines de Miss in 2001, barred young candidates from wearing heels over 1.4 inches high, short dresses, wigs, makeup and swimsuits.

 Questions:

1. What do you think of child beauty pageants?
Should children's beauty pageants be banned?
2. What do you think about adulthood beauty pageants?
Are beauty contests harmful to women?
3. What are the pros and cons of child beauty pageants?

5. Reasons to enter a beauty pageant?
What are the benefits of winning a beauty pageant?
6. What you think about girls wear swimming suits in beauty pageants?

Illegal wiretapping violates human rights and the Constitution (Taiwan News)

The headlines have been dominated recently by news of infighting between the KMT and opposition party and within the KMT itself involving Ma Ying-jeou and Wang Jin-pyng, clashes arising out of “fishing’ by Special Investigation Division (SID) agents wiretapping members of the government. The overall level of wiretapping in Taiwan is said to exceed fifteen thousand cases a year, about the same as the number of cases of legal wiretapping in the US annually. Agents in Taiwan are listening in to conversations with too few restraints.

Reportedly some 80-plus percent of wiretapping is backed by court orders, and the latest statistics available on how the data gleaned from eavesdropping was used show that an average of just under one in five cases were dismissed. Besides that, no one knows how often judicial and police authorities are cutting into in private lines to listen in.

Observers say that as many as 1.5 million people in Taiwan may have had their lines tapped, with the number being constantly monitored for more than a year about 180 – a figure that has led some to wonder, "Does Taiwan have as many as 180 hard-core criminals who need to be monitored so closely? Or is community leaders who are being monitored?"

Video Surveillance Privacy Rights in the U.S ( Noel Lawrence, eHow)

In the last decade, video surveillance has increased dramatically in the United States. For many situations, the usage of video cameras is warranted such as in a bank or an army base. However, federal and state law does place limitations on the use of video surveillance when it intrudes upon a citizen’s right to privacy. Have a question? Get an answer from a Lawyer now!

Surveillance in the Workplace

Passed in 1986, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (EPCA) limits the usage of video surveillance in the workplace. If an employer places a video camera in a location where “a reasonable person” would find surveillance intrusive, they may be prosecuted under the law. For example, a hidden surveillance camera in a toilet would not be legal though most other parts of the workplace are fair game.

Questions:

1. What do you think about wiretapping?

2. Do you care about wiretapping?

Do you think illegal wiretapping violates human rights and the constitution.

3. Do you care that you're under constant surveillance? -

Do you think surveillance cameras violate privacy?

4. Do surveillance cameras reduce crime?

Pros and cons of using security cameras in public places?

5. What you think about security cameras and employee privacy?

6. Can employers use video cameras to monitor workers?

7. Do you approve to be filmed without consent?

5 Ways To Make a Killer First Impression (FindHow.com)

Most people will judge you within the first second of meeting you and their opinion will most likely never change. Making a good first impression is incredibly important, because you only get one shot at it.

Princeton University psychologist Alex Todorov and co-author Janine Willis, a student researcher who graduated from Princeton in 2005 had people look at a microsecond of video of a political candidate. Amazingly, research subjects could predict with 70-percent accuracy who would win the election just from that microsecond of tape. This tells us that people can make incredibly accurate snap judgments in a tenth of a second.

How can you ensure people are judging you accurately and also seeing your best side? You never want to give people an inauthentic impression — many people can intuitively feel if someone is being fake immediately. However, any time you meet someone for the first time, you always want to start on the right foot. Here are a few ways you can make sure people’s first impression of you is a good one:

 1. Set an intention. The most important thing to do for giving a good impression is to set your intention. This is especially important before any kind of big event where you would be meeting a lot of people — i.e. conferences, networking events or friend’s parties. As you get ready or when you are driving over think about what kind of people you want to meet and what kind of interactions you want to have. This can be an incredibly grounding experience and works very well to focus on what kind of energy you want to have for your event.

2. Think about your ornaments. Clothes, make-up, jewelry, watches and shoes are all types of ornamentation and people definitely take these into account when making initial judgments. I highly recommend getting some of your favorite outfits or ornaments together and asking friends you trust what they think of when they see them. For many men, they do not realize that their watch can say a lot about them. For women, purses and large earrings or jewelry can also indicate a lot to a new person they are meeting. Make sure that what you are wearing and how you do your hair or make-up says what you want it to say to the people you are meeting for the first time.

3. Be Conscious of Your Body Language. Body language is a crucial part of first impressions. Everything from your posture to how you carry yourself to the way you’re angling your body. Often, simply being aware of your body language can result in immediate improvements. Another way to examine your body language is to look at yourself on a video walking around a room. Subconscious cues to keep in mind include noticing where you point your feet, the position of your shoulders, and the way you shake hands.

4. Avoid bad days. People who go to cocktail events or mixers after having had a bad day typically continue to have a bad day. If you are in a depressed or anxious mood, others will pick up on this from your facial expressions, comments and body language. If you’re having a bad day, stay home! Otherwise, find a way to snap yourself out of your bad mood. I find working out or watching funny YouTube videos before events often gets me in a more social, feel good mood.

5. Be interested and interesting. If you are truly interested in meeting people and are open to learning about who they are, they will get this in a first impression. We have all had the experience of meeting someone and knowing instantly that they were dragged here by a friend and are just waiting to get out the door and head home. When you are meeting people for the first time approach others with a genuine interest in who they are. This is often contagious and you will have better conversations and lasting connections when you are interested because they become interested.

Generation Y: Passionate, But Unlucky (wordpress.com)

Eighty-nine percent of young adults feel that the economy has negatively impacted their day-to-day lives, revealed a survey conducted this year by an organization dedicated to the cause of the struggling Generation Y.

Generation Y is accused of being spoiled and lazy. They don’t want to do the hard work. They just want to sleep on their parent’s couch and wait for a high-paying job to get handed to them,” Maria Davis, a professor of sociology, said.

However, the survey results showcase a more sympathetic view of Generation Y, one that acknowledges their unique struggles due to the economic recession.

Young adults are having to rearrange their lives and put back major life plans. They are more focused on their work and education and less on buying a home, settling down, and having a family,” Davis said.

The Boston Globe reported that roughly 5.9 million Americans aged 25-34 lived with their parents in 2010, marriages among young adults was at 44.2 percent and homeownership was at 65.4 percent in general.

Generation Y, also referred to as Millennials, has gotten a bad rap over the years, but a panel held in Austin, Texas served to prove preconceptions of Millennials wrong, as the panelists displayed passion, drive and determination in their post-collegiate pursuits. Four recent graduates of UT-Austin’s journalism program spoke to current students on Jan. 17 about their experiences in the professional workforce.

The Pew Research Center found that many Americans viewed Millennials as eternally unsatisfied, constantly switching jobs due to dissatisfaction and a notion of always searching for something better, yet panelist David Muto insisted that trying different things wasn’t flighty, but important to making sure you end up where you belong.

The Credit Union Times reported that companies and organizations hiring Millennials are beginning to realize that they had the wrong idea about young adults entering the job market.

The Pew Research Center found that Millennials are passionate about their jobs and in many cases make work their sole purpose in life.

Generation Y will become more valued as their technological expertise and extensive education become more valued,” Davis said.

Strawberry generation (Wikipedia)

The skin of strawberries can bruise easily

Strawberry generation (Chinese: 草莓族[1] or 草莓世代; pinyin: Cǎoméi zú or cǎoméi shìdài)[2] is a Chinese language neologism for Taiwanese people born between 1981 and 1991 who "bruise easily" like strawberries – meaning they can not withstand social pressure or work hard like their parents' generation; the term refers to people who are insubordinate,[3] spoiled, selfish, arrogant, and sluggish in work.[4]

The term arises from the perception that members of this generation have grown up being overprotected by their parents and in an environment of economic prosperity, in a similar manner to how strawberries are grown in protected greenhouses and command a higher price compared to other fruits.

Questions:

1. What do think about generation Y? Do you think generation Y is lazy?

2. Why some bosses don't think highly of Gen Y workers?

Do you think gen Y employees are less productive than their older generations?

3. Do you think our current generation is smarter, tougher and braver than your generation?

4. Do you switch job easily? Are you a job hopper?

Is it good to change jobs frequently?

5. How do you know if it's time to change jobs?

6. What you think about strawberry generation

Is the strawberry generation really bad?

7. What expertise 'it's important to assess needed to do a job'?

Gyaru fashion (wikipidea)
Gyaru subculture is still a large influence in Japan's fashion economy with gyaru brands branching out and becoming more accessible in rural areas. In Tokyo, more often than not, a shopping center at each main train station is dedicated to offering the newest and trendiest items from popular Gal brands.

Gyaru fashion is a type of Japanese street fashion that originated in the 1970s.[citation needed]. In English speaking countries gyaru is commonly mistaken for ganguro, but that is actually a subculture of gyaru. It was popular in the 1990s, but shortly died out in the early 2000s. Gyaru fashion neither fit well with the Japanese traditional culture nor how the media portray ideals of Japanese women. It is often classified as a sign of youth rebellion.

Gyaru fashion is typically characterized by having heavily bleached or dyed hair (mostly shades from dark brown to blonde), highly decorated nails, and dramatic makeup.
The makeup typically consists of dark eyeliner and fake eyelashes used in ways intended to make the eyes appear larger. Clothing pieces for gyaru fashion differ depending on which gyaru style the individual chooses.

Questions:

1. What do you think about Gyaru?

What do you think about Gyaru makeup?

2. What you think about colorful dye hair girl or boy?

Would you let your child dye his or her hair?

3. What you think about heavily makeup girl?

Do men like heavily made-up girls?

4. Why do women wear makeup?
