A Japanese researcher is causing a stir in Tokyo with a prediction
TOKYO (AP)  A Japanese researcher is causing a stir in Tokyo with a prediction based on his study of radio waves that a major destructive earthquake is highly likely to hit the city this week.

Yoshio Kushida, a well-known self-taught astronomer who runs his own observatory just outside Tokyo, published on its Internet site his prediction that a quake with a magnitude of 7 or greater was likely to strike the metropolitan area on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Do you believe in PREDICTION? (Kiefer Thora)

A prediction or forecast is a statement about the way things will happen in the future, often but not always based on experience or knowledge. While there is much overlap between prediction and forecast, a prediction may be a statement that some outcome is expected, while a forecast is more specific, and may cover a range of possible outcomes.

Although guaranteed information about the future is in many cases impossible, prediction is necessary to allow plans to be made about possible developments; Howard H. Stevenson writes that prediction in business "... is at least two things: Important and hard."

Prediction is closely related to uncertainty. Reference class forecasting was developed to eliminate or reduce uncertainty in prediction.

Informal prediction from hypothesis

Outside the rigorous context of science, prediction is often confused with informed guess or opinion.

A prediction of this kind might be inductively valid if the predictor is a knowledgeable person in the field and is employing sound reasoning and accurate data. Large corporations invest heavily in this kind of activity to help focus attention on possible events, risks and business opportunities, using futurists. Such work brings together all available past and current data, as a basis to develop reasonable expectations

Smarter: Women now have a higher IQ than men according to the latest tests (dailymail.co.uk)

Since IQ testing began a century ago, women have been as much as five points behind, leading psychologists to suggest embedded genetic differences.
But that gap has been narrowing in recent years and this year women have moved ahead, according to James Flynn, a world-renowned authority on IQ tests.

In the last 100 years the IQ scores of both  men and women have risen but women’s have risen faster,’ said Mr Flynn. ‘This is a consequence of modernity. The complexity of the modern world is making our brains adapt and raising our IQ.’
One possible explanation is that women’s lives have become more demanding as they multitask between raising a family and  doing a job.
Another is that women have a slightly higher potential intelligence than men and are only now realising it.

Mr Flynn, who will publish his findings in a book, said more data was needed to explain the trend.

Questions:
 1. Do you think women have higher IQ scores than men?
Are women smarter than men? Please share your opinions ?
2.Do you agree with the idea that women are better than man in memory?
3. What are the things that women do better than men?
What are the things that men do better than women?
4. Do Women work harder than men? And women earn more than men?
5. Are women may be better leaders than men?
6. What jobs do women do better than men?

Can you live a day without your mobile phone?

Walk into any restaurant today and you will see a funny scene. Here, you have a group of friends obviously having dinner together. They are together, but they are not together at the same time. Half of them will be texting while the other half will be talking on their phones. It makes you wonder whether they are communicating with each other through their phones. You would think it is anti-social to use your phone openly like this, but no, it is now becoming a norm. In fact, you would look odd if you are not on the phone while having dinner with someone. And this behavior is not confined only to groups of friends having dinner; couples on a dinner date are just as guilty. Instead of talking to each other, they are each lost in a world of their own. Forgive me, is this datingV7.0 where no talking is necessary anymore. Whatever happens to the good old dating where you look into your partner’s eyes, hold her hands, and whisper sweet talk to her ears? Is this no longer in fashion these days? Maybe I am old-fashioned, but turning off your phone is a great gesture of intimacy and affection for the people you are spending time with. Guys on a date today are more interested in holding their smart-phone, and staring and playing with the beautiful screen.

And then we have people who must forever be on the phone. It’s as if their ear has been sewed onto their phone and its part of their body. They chat while they are walking; they chat while they are eating, and they chat while they are driving. They even text when they are driving. And if you think you have seen it all, wait till you see those who can text when they are riding their motorcycles at the same time. It makes you wonder whether these people are honing their skills to join the circus or something. Now, I have yet to see someone using his phone while he is in the pool, but with water-proof phones now out in the market, I will not be too surprised to see someone texting on the phone while doing the backstroke in the pool. Who knows this will become an event in the Olympics? Well, at least if it does happen, let’s hope that we will see more people using their phones in the pool than behind the wheels. It will be safer to drive on the road this way.

Do you bring your phone into the bathroom when you take a shower or a bath? Well, a lot of people do. No wonder phone companies have to come out with water-proof phones these days. Many phones end up taking a bath, too. And if you think you that is bad, wait till you see what some guys are doing in the restroom. They stand in front of the urinal doing their business while texting with the other hand. These guys are taking multi-tasking to a new level. And guess what? According to one study, 39 percent of the people take their phones into the toilet and 19 percent of them drop their phones down the toilet. Hmm, I wonder how many of them actually try to retrieve them from the toilet.

Ever wonder why the divorce rates are soaring these days? People are not sleeping with their wives anymore; they are sleeping with their mobile phones. They have unlimited love for their phone. When they go to bed, their phones are right beside them. And when they wake up first thing in the morning, whom do they reach out to? Yes, you guess right—their “darling” beside them. Yes, they are reaching out and touching someone but unfortunately that someone is not someone beside them but someone on the other end of the phone.

Yes, mobile phones are getting smarter and smarter, and people are getting dumber and dumber. They can’t do anything without their mobile phones anymore. They can’t eat, they can’t sleep, and they can’t live without them. And yes, they even die with them.

Questions:
1. Can you live without your cell phone?
2. The pros and cons of using smart phones?
3. How often do you checking your smart phone?
4. Using smart phones in restaurants good or bad?
Do you texting while eating?
5. Smartphone addiction: good or bad? |
6. Are smart phones making people dumber?
7. What is cell phone etiquette?
Smartphone etiquette: have we lost all decency?
