Is it bad to bottle up your anger?  By Claudia Hammond BBC

Feeling angry? Let it all out, punch a pillow, blow off steam, but don’t keep it in, right? As Claudia Hammond discovers the evidence is far more complicated.

How often have you heard the advice to not to keep any anger in for the sake your health? There’s a common notion that suppressing your anger must be bad for your body, or at least give you a stomach ulcer. From time to time you read reports showing that it could be bad for your heart. But when you look across the evidence that has built up over the years, what does it reveal about managing anger?

In terms of ulcers, whether you storm around the room raging or simmer in silence, you can still get them. While stress was thought to be a major contributing factor, there’s no clear evidence that it depends on whether or not you express your anger, as its now known that most ulcers are caused either by the bacteria Heliobacter pylori or by prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

When it comes to the heart, the evidence is more mixed. In a study carried out at the University of North Carolina in 2000, 13,000 patients were given questionnaires in which they rated their own tendency to get angry, and were followed up a few years later. Although their blood pressure was apparently normal, those who had said they frequently lose their temper were three times more likely to have had heart attacks in the intervening years than the others, even when factors like smoking, diabetes and weight had been taken into account. Likewise, Mark McDermott from the University of East London found that people who expressed their anger suffered more from heart disease than those who held back from shouting.

Some reports suggest keeping anger in could be bad for your heart, but this isn't the whole story (Thinkstock)

Express yourself

This all seems plausible, especially as there are known physiological mechanisms through which expressing anger could be problematic. When you lose your temper your face reddens, your jaw clenches and your heart starts racing in preparation for fight or flight. The body gets ready by taking fat from smooth muscle in case you need extra energy. If those fatty acids aren’t used they have to go somewhere and can end up clinging to the artery walls, and these deposits can contribute to heart disease.

What are illegal fundraising activities or activities contrary to public policy for CRA? By: Mark Blumberg

Fundraising activities that are illegal or contrary to public policy are prohibited and may result in revocation of registered charity status.

Examples of illegal fundraising activities are activities that are criminally fraudulent, or violate federal or provincial statutes governing charitable fundraising, charitable gaming, the use of charitable property, or consumer protection.

Illegal fundraising is prohibited whether it is carried on by the charity itself or it is carried on by a third party on behalf of the charity. Charities should ensure that third parties raising funds on their behalf are complying with all applicable laws.

In particular, fundraising that includes the issuance of improper donation receipts is contrary to the Income Tax Act and can lead to revocation.  The CRA takes the position that fundraising is not acceptable even where the fundraising activity is not in itself illegal, but is associated with illegal conduct. This is the case where a charity knows, or ought to have known, that it is furthering illicit practices or transactions.

For example, where a charity fails to exercise adequate care to ensure the integrity of a third-party tax shelter scheme marketed to multiple donors, it may be facilitating or advancing wrongful conduct by others. This may be grounds for revocation or other sanctions.

Crack down illegal fundraising
Beijing has called on local authorities  after China's largest online peer-to-peer (P2P) lender was found to have collected more than 50 billion yuan ($7.6 billion) for fake investment projects.

The State Council said on its website late on Thursday that strict precautions must be taken to prevent future illegal fundraising cases, and that the government would work to educate the public better about such financial risks.

Detained executives from the parent company of Ezubao, once China's biggest P2P lending platform, have said the firm was a Ponzi scheme that advertised products promising annual returns of up to 14 percent, attracting 50 billion yuan from more than 900,000 investors.

The case has underscored the risks created by China's fast-growing $2.6 trillion wealth management product industry. Many products are sold through loosely regulated channels, including online financial investment platforms and privately run exchanges.

More than 400 billion yuan had been raised by more than 3,600 P2P platforms by the end of November, according to the China Banking Regulatory Commission. More than 1,000 of those firms were problematic, it said.  (Reporting by Brenda Goh; Editing by Paul Tait)
