Reasons Relationships Fail

Most of us want to meet and settle down with the “right” person, and most of us want such a relationship to last. At the same time, the majority of romantic partnerships end in dissolution. What are some of the major causes?
1. Trust Issues
Lack or loss of trust is one of the most harmful contagions to a couple’s long-term success. Without trust, a relationship misses two of the key anchors to a strong bond: safety and security.
Trust issues may include factors such as jealousy, possessiveness, unreasonable rigidity, emotional infidelity, physical/sexual infidelity, relational game playing, lack of reliability and dependability, lack of emotional support, lack of financial compatibility, and lack of mutually-supportive goals.
2. Different Expectations
It’s not easy for a couple to walk a journey together for a long time. The elements that frequently draw two people toward one-another at the beginning of a relationship – physical attraction, sexual passion, common interests, personality connections, socio-economic backgrounds – often become less central as the realities and demands of day to day life sets in. Overtime, a couple’s expectations in the relationship may differentiate, as they begin to see their respective life plans as “what I want,” instead of “what we want.”
3. Moving Through Life at Different Speeds
When one partner is learning and growing at a rapid pace, while the other is stagnating, this may be a source of relational divergence. One example of this would be a partner advancing quickly in her career and society, while her significant other is stagnating at home. The professional and social circles of the couple begin to diverge, and soon the couple themselves differentiate. They have physically, intellectually, and socially grown apart.
4. Compatibility Issues
Relational compatibility is a large topic worthy of full volumes of its own. In my books (click on titles) “7 Keys to Long-Term Relationship Success (link is external)” and “How to Get Over a Break-Up – Keys to Healing and Happiness Again (link is external)”, relationship compatibility is explored in detail from several perspectives, including compatibility in intimacy, compatibility in personality types, and compatibility in attachment styles.

5. Communication Issues
This is a big one. Numerous studies have identified communication (or a lack thereof) as one of the top reasons for couples therapy, as well as one of the top reasons for break-up and divorce .

Brazilian woman pretends to have died in a coffin to experience own funeral
dailymail.co.uk by Janet Tappin Coelho
The 44-year-old only moved to drink tea and water and described the day as the 'best of her life'
The extraordinary ceremony, which was held on the Day of the Dead celebration in South America on Wednesday, November 2, took place at a funeral home in Camocim, a seaside resort in north east Brazil.
While her friends and family were against the idea, they dressed in black and visited throughout the day in a show of support.
The owner of the Eternal Garden Funeral home, Paulo Araujo, donated the coffin and the space free to Vera, as a gesture of good will.
In a video filmed on the day, Vera can be seen having her make-up done and enjoying the moment.
She messes around opening and closing her eyes causing her friends to scream with horror and laughter as she pretends to be dead one moment and alive in the next.
The married housewife, who doesn't have children, explained 'celebrating' her own funeral was an 'old dream' that she never thought would come true.
The married housewife said it was a dream come true to attend her own funeral
She said: 'I wanted to hold my own funeral 14 years ago. I've waited a long time and can't believe that at last this wish has been granted.
'When I invited my friends and family they thought I was joking and they didn't take it seriously.'
Mr Araujo said Vera has been trying to persuade him to fulfil her desire for five years but he has always resisted up until now.
He said: 'Her husband has always been unhappy with the idea and has stopped her from doing it before.
'But this time she finally managed to persuade the rest of her family to agree to the idea, so we went ahead.'
An excited Vera arrived at the funeral parlour at 7am on the day and started the preparations for her wake, which lasted from 9am until 6pm.
Rosary beads were wrapped around her hands and the lower half of her body was covered with flowers.
As she lay in the coffin, friends helped to apply her make-up and funeral parlour assistants arranged and dressed the condolence flowers on top of her body, that had been donated by well wishers.
During the preparations, they can be heard laughing and joking about it being a spooky situation.
One says: 'Have you ever seen a corpse smile?' To which Vera opens her eyes and laughs loudly.
Then teasing her, they tell her to pretend she is alive and then dead: 'Open your eyes, now show me a dead face, now be alive, now dead, now alive,' they joked.
