Are you part of the NEET Generation?     KCLau.com

A report by the Social Exclusion Unit in UK found that at any one time, 161,000, or 9%, of the age group [16-19] are outside of education, training and work for long periods after the school-leaving age of 16.

In Japan, there is no NEET until 1997. But when many young people have become so wealthy to have to work, there is no reason for them to work. Is this a problem or a bless? But in the UK, the NEET group mainly consists of the lower socio-economic people.

What is NEET Generation?

NEET is a government classification, first used in the United Kingdom but whose use has spread to other countries, including Japan, China and South Korea. The classification is “Not currently engaged in Employment, Education or Training“.

Why there is NEET?

1. Jobs are not well paid
Due to the globalization and job outsourcing, the salary increment doesn’t seem to cope with inflation. Most employees leave their companies due to job dissatisfaction, office politic and mainly because of the salary. But of course, the younger generation nowadays are unlike the old days. Job is supposed to be easy, fun, and well-paid. Since you are not likely to find this kind of job, you will hop from one place to the others.

2. College degrees don’t give young people the head start
I still remembered the story published on the local newspaper – a university graduate had to help his parents selling fried banana because she just couldn’t land a decent job.

3. High education loan and consumer debt
Money may not solve every problem. This is especially true to those who don’t know how to control the power of money. The fresh graduates today have to face the financial trouble of getting a car to work, while worrying about the monthly debt repayment of study loan and credit cards.

4. Big sponsorship from parents
Too much pampering, non-stop financial aid, and the lack of financial education have demolish their will to be independent.

Are you a NEET?
Once upon the time, my parents thought that I am a NEET indeed. During 2000-2001, I was a fresh graduate with a degree in engineering, but working as a musician instead. I think they misunderstand that because I treat myself as self-employed.
 Q:
What do you think of the NEET generation?
Why NEET become social issues?
Is unemployment a social problem?
Does high education guarantee a high income?
What kind of jobs with well paid?
Why college degrees don’t give a good pay job?
Is it Ok to get financial aid from parents?

Plants Make You Feel Better     psychologytoday.com

Recently, an article in Miller-McCune caught my attention. It mentioned several research studies related to the positive impact of nature on the human condition. Having plants, going for a walk in the park, or even looking at a landscape poster could produce psychological benefits, reduce stress, and improve concentration. Click here for the Miller-McCune article: Nature is Good (link is external).

So, I decided to take a closer look at the research and see what might be helpful relative to our often stressful experience of living and working in the city. Though it is not related to mindfulness, this topic seemed interesting and particularly timely as we start sloughing off the heavy coat of winter and welcome the coming of spring.

Plants in Your Space

Based on several experimental studies, the presence of potted plants has been found to be helpful in many different settings including work, school, and hospitals. In particular, plants have been shown to...

    Lower blood pressure (systolic)
    Improve reaction times
Improve attendance (at work and school)
    Raise productivity (at work)
    Improve well-being
Lower levels of anxiety during recovery from surgery
    Raise job satisfaction

Not bad, huh?! Feeling good around plants is probably not surprising. After all, we surround ourselves with plants during celebrations and tragedies (i.e., weddings and funerals, respectively). We also set aisde "sacred" green space for parks and community gardens in our cities and communities.

Limitations of the Research

Before we get ahead of ourselves and start replacing the carpet with trays of wheat grass, it's important to know one major limitation of the research. Most of the studies on the effects of houseplants have compared the presence of plants to their absence. While this is the epitome of a well-designed experiment, there might be other factors associated with the presence of plants--but not the plants themselves--that account for the more favorable results. For example, the improvement could be due to distraction, novelty, caring for something, perceived control, or improved air quality. Thus, we might get similar results under different circumstances, such as replacing the plants with a dartboard, photos, Sea Monkeys, or an air purifier. So, it's important to keep in mind that other additions to your space might also be helpful.
Q:
Do you think that plants could make you feel better?
What are the positive impact of nature on the human condition?
What are the advantages of the presence of potted plants?
How to lower levels of anxiety?
How to raise job satisfaction?

Ways To Broaden Your Horizons; Become A Better Person    By Crystal Crowder

Travel and interact with locals.
Usually when you travel, you’re with friends or family. How often do you actually talk to your tour guides, hotel employees or just random locals you see while you’re out? You’d be surprised how much you learn about another culture just by interacting with those you’ve lived in the area all their lives. Try traveling solo sometime and give yourself a chance to delve into the local culture.

Go to random festivals.
I doubt there’s a single day without some type of festival going on. Whether it’s food, music, history, art or something else entirely, find area festivals and go to them. The idea is to simply expose yourself to something new. If you’re traveling, make your plans around well known festivals.

Put your skills to use and volunteer.
Are you great with animals? Do you love to cook? Part of being well-rounded means interacting with new groups of people and offering your skills to others. Meet new people and help at the same time by volunteering. Besides, it’s just a nice thing to do.

Join local groups that share your interests.
I know I said step outside your comfort zone, but you can still be well-rounded just by learning more about your own interests. Maybe you’re into rock climbing or writing fan fiction. Whatever it is, there’s likely a group nearby or even online for you to join. You’d be surprised just how much you learn by talking to others who share your interests.

Try a hobby you’ve always been afraid to try.
Have you always wanted to dance, but you tend to trip over your own feet while standing still? What do you have to lose? Join a beginner’s dance class. It’s about the experience. Who cares if you’re not a professional ballerina in the end? At least you tried and learned something along the way.

Take a museum road trip.
Reading a history book might put you to sleep. Visiting museums or historic landmarks is a lot more interesting. Odds are, you have quite a few of both within just a few hours of your home.

Get app happy.
Sometimes all it takes is your phone to become a well-rounded person. No, playing Candy Crush doesn’t cut it. I’m talking about language apps, free online courses via apps and even international news apps. Spending just a few minutes a day without apps like these is a great start.

Start your own business.
Really want to experience something new that’ll push you way outside your comfort zone? Start your own business. Suddenly, you’ll have to learn about marketing, finance, customer service and more. Plus, you get to make money at the same time.
Q:
What are the ways to broaden your horizons?
What are the ways to make you a better person?
How often do you actually talk to new people?
Pros and cons of traveling solo?
What are the hobbies you’ve always been afraid to try?
Do you like to visit museums?

Philippines president jokes about rape in speech to soldiers     usatoday

President Rodrigo Duterte made a joke about rape as he urged soldiers to use the powers of martial law to take control of a besieged city in the southern Philippines.

In the speech Friday, Duterte said he will pay the consequences if any soldiers are accused of abuses.

He said: "I will go to jail for you. If you happen to have raped three women, I will own up to it."

On Tuesday, Duterte imposed 60 days of martial law in the southern Philippines as government forces battle militants in Marawi, a city of some 200,000 people.

Duterte is unapologetic about his manner of speech and liberally peppers casual statements with profanities.

Sexual Jokes Are Not Appropriate In The Workplace

There's nothing wrong with your sense of humor if you are offended by sexual jokes. They can be graphic and shocking. They can be demeaning and reinforce negative stereotypes. They can make you feel self-conscious or defensive. They can also be a gateway to unwelcome sexual advances or other forms of sexual harassment. The bottom line is that your employer should not allow sexualized jokes or obscene language in the workplace if a reasonable person would be offended or intimidated.

Why We Love Superhero Films    the-artifice.com

This article contains spoilers for the following films: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Spider-Man, and Man of Steel.

Superheroes are a popular aspect of contemporary entertainment culture. Whether one becomes a fan spending hours engrossed in the pages of a comic book or encounters them for the first time at the movie theater, chances are that the average person knows and loves at least one superhero. Superhero films are almost guaranteed blockbusters. Of the top 100 superhero films released since 1978, 46 of them grossed over 100 million dollars.

What causes this mass appeal, driving millions of people into movie theaters every year? Does audience interest stem from the action-packed story lines? Is it the improbably beautiful bodies displayed for all to see in Lycra Spandex-covered glory? Perhaps it is the simple promise of two hours of entertainment guaranteed to provide the experience of an epic adventure. Closer examination of the films themselves leads one to believe that the appeal goes deeper than a basic need for entertainment. Though enhanced by super powers or abilities, the superhero as portrayed in today’s films displays an astonishing level of humanity. Audiences watch superhero characters cope with the human experience through these films, an experience with which audience members can identify. Viewers see a part of their own reality on the big screen through superhero characters. This is what makes the characters so relatable and inspirational to the viewer.

Wearables Want To Track Your Stress — But It’s Really Hard To Do
Stephanie M. Lee   buzzfeed.com

If you’re someone who stresses out, a wearable that reminds you to chill when you’re on edge might sound like an ideal gadget. You’d be able to review your body’s data and understand what fuels your anxiety each day (Work deadlines? Morning traffic? Game of Thrones cliffhangers?). And maybe, empowered by this information, you’d learn to keep calm in stress-inducing situations.

Spire, a stone-shaped tracker that’s coming to Apple stores July 12, joins a growing number of wearables and apps that promise to help you manage your stress. The startup behind Spire, and others like it, say their technology can help improve your mental health and overall well-being. Apple’s in on it, too: Just last month, it unveiled the Breathe app for the Apple Watch, which promotes mindfulness by prompting you to take deep breaths.

But there is scarce evidence that meditation and mindfulness apps actually have health benefits. And while there’s little harm in being prodded to breathe more deeply more often, customers may not realize just how hard it is for a portable machine to accurately detect their real-time stress levels.

Measuring stress has been a holy grail,” Dr. Santosh Kumar, a computer science professor at the University of Memphis who has studied wearable sensors’ ability to measure stress, told BuzzFeed News.

There [are] so many things you can do if there was a way to measure stress reliably in a field environment,” he said, like figuring out which jobs and everyday activities are most stressful for people. “[But] getting quality data — continuously, passively, when no one’s observing you, when you’re engaged in a free-living environment — is extremely hard.”

Spire’s stress-tracking device, which sells for $129.95 and has been available until now through online stores, clips to your belt or bra to detect your chest’s motion as you inhale and exhale. The data feeds into an app that illustrates your breathing wave in real time, deduces how much you normally breathe in a minute, and breaks down your breathing patterns into “calm,” “focus,” and “tense” minutes.

Stress sometimes manifests psychologically, sometimes physiologically, and sometimes both. That's why it's so hard for wearables to track.

You are “tense” when, after a two-minute period, your breathing registers as faster and more erratic than the way you usually respire, according to Spire’s executives. When this happens, the app sends you real-time notifications about your status and suggests audio-guided breathing exercises, from reducing tension in 30 seconds to meditating for eight minutes. While Spire’s definition of “tense” may cover stress in the traditional sense, it can also encompass moments of excitement, or even miss your silent freak-outs if your breathing patterns don’t change.

Stop buying avocado if you want dream home
David Reid  cnbc.com

A multimillionaire property magnate in Australia has told young people that if they want to get on the property ladder, they should stop spending so much money on avocado toast and coffee.

"When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn't buying smashed avocado for $19 ($15) and four coffees at $4 each," said Tim Gurner, 35, an Australian property tycoon who reportedly has almost half a billion dollars in the bank.

The millionaire began his career as a property investor after purchasing a gym in Melbourne's south in 2001 with the help of $34,000 borrowed from his grandfather.

He then went on to found his real estate company Gurner in 2015 and, according to 9news, currently has $3.8 billion worth of development projects.

In the interview, the 35-year-old stressed how hard he worked when he was young.

"When I had my first business when I was 19, I was in the gym at 6 a.m. in the morning, and I finished at 10.30 at night, and I did it seven days a week and I did it until I could afford my first home."

Gurner told the Australian television version of 60 minutes that the problem lay with reality TV stars who give millennials unrealistic expectations.

"This generation is watching the Kardashians and thinking that's normal – thinking owning a Bentley is normal. They want to eat out every day; they want travel to Europe every year.

"The people that own homes today worked very, very hard for it [and] saved every dollar, did everything they could to get up the property investment ladder."

Gurner said one ray of light for young people would be the huge transfer of wealth as baby boomers retired and grew old but added that this could take as long as 20 years to materialize.

The comments echo an editorial piece in The Australian newspaper last year in which Demographer Bernard Salt young people could better afford a home if they stopped spending all their money in expensive cafes.

"I have seen young people order smashed avocado with crumbled feta on five-grain toasted bread at $22 a pop and more. I can afford to eat this for lunch because I am middle aged and have raised my family.

"But how can young people afford to eat like this? Shouldn't they be economizing by eating at home? How often are they eating out? Twenty-two dollars several times a week could go towards a deposit on a house," he wrote.

The Truth behind Cancer “Cures”      mskcc.org

Therapies such as acupuncture and massage can be a useful complement to conventional methods of treating cancer. But “cure-all” solutions that claim to eliminate disease naturally aren’t proven to work — and can actually be dangerous for people with cancer.

The Internet is full of “miracle cures” for cancer and alleged surefire ways to prevent it, and well-meaning people may urge cancer patients to just try them out in hopes of eliminating their disease. Some patients, worried that conventional treatments wont work or pose significant side effects, seek a treatment whose effectiveness isn’t actually supported by scientific evidence or may even prove dangerous. During a time of uncertainty and anxiety, it’s understandable that any hope for a cure — even if it isn’t medically proven — is tempting.

Patients want something ‘natural’ to try to treat their cancer or prevent their cancer from coming back,” says Memorial Sloan Kettering pharmacist and herbalist K. Simon Yeung. “But the people promoting these treatments might not necessarily have a medical or oncology background. In addition, patients who try these therapies may find, when they come back to seek mainstream treatment, that it’s too late and their cancer has already spread.”

Dr. Yeung is manager of the About Herbs database, created and maintained by MSK’s Integrative Medicine Service. The service provides complementary therapies such as acupuncture, music therapy, and massage that are used in addition to — not as alternatives for — mainstream cancer approaches such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

The Bottom Line

Natural” cancer therapies should be regarded with great caution because most are unsupported by evidence. Many people offering testimonials to the effectiveness of such treatments may attribute benefits to them simply because their condition improved after using them — when the actual cause for the improvement is unrelated.

The good news is that mainstream cancer therapies are safer and more effective than ever. New chemotherapies work better with fewer side effects, and novel drugs target specific mutations in cancer cells to minimize harm to healthy cells. Highly precise forms of radiation therapy destroy tumors while sparing normal tissue. New approaches harness the body’s own immune powers to destroy cancer cells. And new surgical techniques are making it possible to remove tumors more safely while minimizing both risk of recurrence and recovery times.

Food can make you happy!
The science of happiness has turned up evidence that food can make you happy. However, a lack of certain foods -- or at least some of their essential ingredients -- can actually make you sad. A fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is the most abundant fat found in the brain. This is good, since it's an essential building block for brain structure. It's also easy to get; two major sources of DHA are fish and shellfish. A study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) uncovered a link between DHA deficiency and an increase in the prevalence of depression in the United States.

Happy Foods
To understand how foods can make you happy, it's important to understand how the brain regulates mood. The brain uses neurotransmitters as communication signals to communicate with the rest of your body and to issue its commands. "Beat, heart!" the brain says when it sends octopamine to receptors located in the nerve fibers that make up the cardiac muscle tissue [source: Johnson, et al].

The same goes for keeping our moods stable. Two types of neurotransmitters are responsible for our moods: inhibitory and excitatory. Excitatory neurotransmitters like norepinephrine stimulate our bodies and minds. We get worn out after being amped up for too long, though, and so this type of neurotransmitter can actually lead to unhappiness. Inhibitory neurotransmitters like serotonin exert a calming influence on our minds, in part by counteracting the effects of excitatory neurotransmitters. Ultimately, the best moods are found when there is a balance between these two types.

These mood-affecting chemicals aren't made out of thin air, however. They're created by compounds found in food, and some foods are better at helping neurotransmitter production than others. We'll call these happy foods.

Typically, serotonin is the neurotransmitter most linked to happiness, since you need it to regulate sleep and pain. It's also a powerhouse at counteracting excitatory neurotransmitters [source: Neurogistics].

Foods that aid serotonin production include spinach, turkey and bananas. Spinach contains high concentrations of folate, a B-vitamin used in the serotonin creation process. Bananas and turkey pack lots of tryptophan, an amino acid that's converted into serotonin in the brain. Tryptophan manages to go directly to the brain by crossing the protective cellular barrier between the bloodstream and the brain. This makes tryptophan a rarity, since serotonin can't cross this blood-brain barrier [source: Hyde and Gengenbach].

Another major neurotransmitter that helps regulate and stabilize mood is gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), commonly referred to as "nature's Valium" because of its tranquilizing effects on the body. GABA is produced during the Krebs cycle, a physiological process by which nutrients are converted to energy for cellular use. Foods don't contain GABA, but some contain the neurotransmitter's building block, an amino acid called l-glutamine. Pork, beef and sesame and sunflower seeds all have high concentrations of glutamine.
