新聞對健康不好!
News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier

News is bad for your health. It leads to fear and aggression, and hinders your creativity and ability to think deeply. The solution? Stop consuming it altogether.

News misleads. Take the following event (borrowed from Nassim Taleb). A car drives over a bridge, and the bridge collapses. What does the news media focus on? The car. The person in the car. Where he came from. Where he planned to go. How he experienced the crash (if he survived). But that is all irrelevant. What's relevant? The structural stability of the bridge. That's the underlying risk that has been lurking, and could lurk in other bridges. But the car is flashy, it's dramatic, it's a person (non-abstract), and it's news that's cheap to produce. News leads us to walk around with the completely wrong risk map in our heads. So terrorism is over-rated. Chronic stress is under-rated. The collapse of Lehman Brothers is overrated. Fiscal irresponsibility is under-rated. Astronauts are over-rated. Nurses are under-rated.

News is toxic to your body. It constantly triggers the limbic system. Panicky stories spur the release of cascades of glucocorticoid (cortisol). This deregulates your immune system and inhibits the release of growth hormones. In other words, your body finds itself in a state of chronic stress. High glucocorticoid levels cause impaired digestion, lack of growth (cell, hair, bone), nervousness and susceptibility to infections. The other potential side-effects include fear, aggression, tunnel-vision and desensitisation.

News increases cognitive errors. News feeds the mother of all cognitive errors: confirmation bias. In the words of Warren Buffett: "What the human being is best at doing is interpreting all new information so that their prior conclusions remain intact." News exacerbates this flaw. We become prone to overconfidence, take stupid risks and misjudge opportunities. It also exacerbates another cognitive error: the story bias. Our brains crave stories that "make sense" – even if they don't correspond to reality. Any journalist who writes, "The market moved because of X" or "the company went bankrupt because of Y" is an idiot. I am fed up with this cheap way of "explaining" the world.

News wastes time. If you read the newspaper for 15 minutes each morning, then check the news for 15 minutes during lunch and 15 minutes before you go to bed, then add five minutes here and there when you're at work, then count distraction and refocusing time, you will lose at least half a day every week. Information is no longer a scarce commodity. But attention is. You are not that irresponsible with your money, reputation or health. Why give away your mind?

News makes us passive. News stories are overwhelmingly about things you cannot influence. The daily repetition of news about things we can't act upon makes us passive. It grinds us down until we adopt a worldview that is pessimistic, desensitised, sarcastic and fatalistic. The scientific term is "learned helplessness". It's a bit of a stretch, but I would not be surprised if news consumption, at least partially contributes to the widespread disease of depression.

Don't Dare Help the Elderly

At Bloomberg, Adam Minter explains why many Chinese have come to believe that, in the words of one Weibo poster, “helping a fallen senior is a risky investment and its overall rate of return is usually negative“:

On the morning of Sept. 4, in the riverside boomtown of Wuhan, Mr. Li, an 88-year-old man, fell in the street and injured his nose. People passed him by, but no one raised a hand to help as he lay on the ground, suffocating on his own blood.

This week, China’s netizens have expressed an outpouring of sympathy – for the bystanders. This is nothing new here. In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of elderly men and women who have collapsed or suffered accidents in public spaces who then sue the good Samaritans who have tried to help them. These cases have created a genuine and widespread fear that helping a person in need will lead to personal financial loss.

In the wake of the Wuhan incident, People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the ruling Communist Party, ran an online poll that asked if people would help a collapsed elderly person on the street. More than 80 percent of respondents said that they, too, wouldn’t help for fear of extortion. A poll on Sina Weibo, China’s leading microblog, showed a similar result: 43 percent said they wouldn’t help, 38 percent said they weren’t sure what they would do, and only 20 percent said they would “definitely” help.

The Chinese have long prided themselves on their traditional, Confucian reverence for the elderly. And these incidents have generated an exceptional outpouring of public concern over the decline of social ethics and morality in Chinese society
Q:
From this article “43 percent said they wouldn’t help, 38 percent said they weren’t sure what they would do, and only 20 percent said they would “definitely” help.” So, what are your opinions?

The Science Of Why You Should Spend Your Money On Experiences, Not Things    fastcoexist.com

Most people are in the pursuit of happiness. There are economists who think happiness is the best indicator of the health of a society. We know that money can make you happier, though after your basic needs are met, it doesn't make you that much happier. But one of the biggest questions is how to allocate our money, which is (for most of us) a limited resource.

There's a very logical assumption that most people make when spending their money: that because a physical object will last longer, it will make us happier for a longer time than a one-off experience like a concert or vacation. According to recent research, it turns out that assumption is completely wrong.

"One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation," says Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University who has been studying the question of money and happiness for over two decades. "We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed. But only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them."

So rather than buying the latest iPhone or a new BMW, Gilovich suggests you'll get more happiness spending money on experiences like going to art exhibits, doing outdoor activities, learning a new skill, or traveling.

Gilovich's findings are the synthesis of psychological studies conducted by him and others into the Easterlin paradox, which found that money buys happiness, but only up to a point. How adaptation affects happiness, for instance, was measured in a study that asked people to self-report their happiness with major material and experiential purchases. Initially, their happiness with those purchases was ranked about the same. But over time, people's satisfaction with the things they bought went down, whereas their satisfaction with experiences they spent money on went up.

It's counterintuitive that something like a physical object that you can keep for a long time doesn't keep you as happy as long as a once-and-done experience does. Ironically, the fact that a material thing is ever present works against it, making it easier to adapt to. It fades into the background and becomes part of the new normal. But while the happiness from material purchases diminishes over time, experiences become an ingrained part of our identity.

K-Pop Korean Girl Groups You Should Know   Seohyun, Tiffany,

What Is K-Pop?
K-Pop is a genre of South Korean pop music. Hang on. I know what you're thinking: I saw that Gangnam Style video and it was pretty funny, but I wouldn't want to listen to that stuff all the time. Well, for better or worse (depending on how much of a Psy fan you are) a lot of Korean pop music is nothing like Gangnam Style. In fact, the look and sound of K-Pop is heavily influenced by American pop music, so many Korean girl groups are actually much more likely to sound similar to artists like Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna.

What Are K-Pop Idols and Idol Groups?
Most K-Pop artists are trained performers rather than discovered musicians. They are usually recruited from talent scouting competitions and awarded long-term contracts that include years of training in music, dance, and choreography. Many start training for talent contests on their own when they are as young as 9 or 10 years old. Therefore, it is more accurate to consider K-pop idols professional entertainers and media personalities rather than simply musicians.

Jewelry
Jewelry was formed in 2001 by Star Empire Entertainment company and is currently the longest-running Korean girl group ever. It consists of four members: Eunjung, Baby J, Ye-won, and Semi. To date, Jewelry has 8 studio albums as well as tons of singles.

After School
Formed by the Pledis Entertainment music label in 2009, After School was the first K-Pop band to introduce the graduation system for fluctuating band members. Originally, it had 5 members, but several original members have "graduated" and new members have been admitted. Currently After School has 8 members: Jungah, Jooyeon, Uee, Raina, Nana, Lizzy, E-Young and Kaeun. After school has released 2 studio albums (one Korean and one Japanese) and 21 music videos to date as well as a number of singles, collaborations, soundtrack appearances, etc.

F(x)
F(x) is a girl group formed by the SM Entertainment record label in 2009. It consists of 5 members: Victoria, Amber, Luna, Sulli, and Krystal. They have produced one full studio album and 11 music videos to date, as well as several EPs and Single albums.

Sistar
Sistar was formed in 2010 by the Starship Entertainment record label. The group consists of 4 members: Hyorin, Bora, Soyou, and Dasom. To date, they have produced one studio album and 13 music videos as well as many single albums and EPs.

AOA‘s “Like A Cat” MV has gained 1 million views within 24 hours of it being released. Apparently, the comeback this time seems a lot more promising than their previous no-win “Short Hair”. A lot of people will still get ticked off by this MV, however, and it  deserves criticism for all the objectification of women throughout the video.
Q:
Why K-Pop Korean Girl Groups so popular?
Do you like dancing? Do you like K-Pop stars?
What do you think about Korean pop cultures?
What Are the Idol Groups you like most?
Why are Korean girls beautiful?
Do K pop undergo Plastic Surgery?

Astrologer Russell Grant claims way people shop is influenced by signs.  By Keiligh Baker for MailOnline
He says supermarket shopping habits are a reflection of people's zodiac
Those who are Aries are likely to spend as little time possible shopping
But Taurus splashes out on big name brands, while Capricorn is savvy

Astrologer Russell Grant (pictured) believes zodiac signs influence our supermarket shopping habits

From shopaholics to those who can't stand supermarkets - Britain's consumer habits may simply be the result of their star sign, according to an astrologer.

Capricorns are canny and Scorpios are savvy because the way they buy their groceries is a reflection of their zodiac sign, claims stargazer and Strictly Come Dancing star Russell Grant.

He says shopping habits are dictated by star signs, so those who are Aries are more likely to spend as little time as possible in a supermarket - compared to Taurus, who like to splash out on big name brands.

Geminis fall for the adverts and buy things they don't need and Leos 'live for the sales', said the horoscope expert.

Mr Grant claims the habits apply whether it is an Aries in Asda, a Sagitarrius in Sainsbury's or even a virtual Virgo ordering their deliveries online.

So is he right? Here's what he believes your star sign says about your supermarket shopping habits:

ARIES: 'Not everyone enjoys food shopping. Aries won't hang around comparing brands and prices or reading labels.

'They'll just want to grab a trolley, get into the store and get out again in less than 30 minutes.'

Myths About The Moon    mythencyclopedia

The moon, the largest and brightest object in the night sky, has long inspired curiosity and wonder. It appears at night, the time of sleep and dreaming that sometimes seems to approach the borders of death and the afterlife. Radiating an air of mystery and magic, the moon is also associated with love and often serves as a symbol of unattainable beauty.

The Moon in Myths.   A Native American myth says that the sun and moon are a chieftain and his wife and that the stars are their children. The sun loves to catch and eat his children, so they flee from the sky whenever he appears. The moon plays happily with the stars while the sun is sleeping. But each month, she turns her face to one side and darkens it (as the moon wanes) to mourn the children that the sun succeeded in catching.

The Efik Ibibio people of Nigeria in West Africa also say that the sun and the moon are husband and wife. Long ago they lived on the earth. One day their best friend, flood, came to visit them, bringing fish, reptiles, and other relatives. Flood rose so high in their house that they had to perch on the roof. Finally he covered the house entirely, so the sun and moon had to leap into the sky.

According to the Greek myth of Endymion and Selene, the moon (Selene) fell in love with a handsome young king named Endymion and bore him 50 daughters. One version of the story says that Selene placed Endymion in eternal sleep to prevent him from dying and to keep him forever beautiful.

In a myth of the Luyia people of Kenya in East Africa, the sun and moon were brothers. The moon was older, bigger, and brighter, and the jealous sun picked a fight with him. The two wrestled and the moon fell into mud, which dimmed his brightness. God finally made them stop fighting and kept them apart by ordering the sun to shine by day and the mud-spattered moon to shine by night to illuminate the world of witches and thieves.

Going Moon-Mad

People once believed that moonlight had a powerful effect on human behavior. Those who acted strangely were said to be "moonstruck," and  lunacy,  a term for madness, comes from Luna, the Latin name for the moon goddess. The Japanese believed that the moon was a god with powers to foretell the future. Priests would study the moon's reflection in a mirror, believing that if they gazed directly at the moon, it might drive them mad. Superstitions about the moon's evil influence made some people refuse to sleep in a place where moonbeams could touch them. In the 1200s, the English philosopher Roger Bacon wrote, "Many have died from not protecting themselves from the rays of the moon."

Get ready for the next generation of reality TV – Naked dating
 metro.co.uk

Created by TV company Eyework, TV show Adam and Eve is billed as ‘an incredible experiment to find true love in its purest form.’

It sees contestants taken by boat (naked) to a tropical island where they must swim to shore (naked), with the aim of finding love (naked) – you get the picture.

The sans clothing singletons are left on different sides of the island and then left to wander to one another and begin their first date in nothing but their birthday suits.

The show’s description is really something: ‘After a spectacular and rather awkward start, the couple explores the island to find their shelter and food supply, where they will spend the night together in a breathtaking paradise: it is their true Garden of Eden.’

Having proved a hit in its native Holland, there are now said to be plans to bring the series to the UK. The question is, will they do a celeb version?

Naked dating show   wiki

Adam Zkt. Eva (Dutch for Adam seeks Eve) is a Dutch television dating show produced by Reinout Oerlemans which first aired in 2014, on RTL 5. The show's gimmick is that the two candidates are naked, and an additional twist is that a second candidate (also naked) for the main character's affections is introduced halfway through the program. The show is shot on an island in the Pacific Ocean. A reviewer for de Volkskrant was not impressed and called it just another dating show (instead of the advertised "unique love experiment").[1] Tweets by Dutch TV personalities expressed mainly surprise.[2]

What is palmistry?
Palmistry is a method of counselling that originated in India over 3,000 years ago. It is a part of a vast field of study, referred to as Samudrik Shastra, which literally means the ocean of knowledge. Palmistry is a sub-section of Samudrik Shastra and deals specifically with the study of the hand.

Your Future Is in the Palm of Your (Surgeon’s) Hand
Want to be richer? To live longer? Easy. In Japan, the latest craze is to change your fortune with palm surgery that extends your lines. Jake Adelstein and Nathalie-Kyoko Stucky report from the fortune-telling frontier.

In Japan, where palm reading remains one of the most popular means of fortune-telling, some people have figured out a way to change their fate. It’s a simple idea: change your palm, change the reading, and change your future. All you need is a competent plastic surgeon with an electric scalpel who has a basic knowledge of palmistry. Or you can draw the lines on your hand with a marker and let him work the magic you want.

Missing a marriage line? That can be fixed. Wedding bells may ring.

Need some good fortune? Add a money-luck line and you might win the lottery or be promoted to vice president in your firm. For the smart shopper—one willing to undergo palm plastic surgery—the future isn’t what it used to be.Doctor, I want you to change my fate. Please change my palm.”(thedailybeast.com)
