What to do if Your Spouse Doesn't do Chores
Amy Morin, LCSW

When one spouse feels overwhelmed with household responsibilities it can lead to a lot of anger and resentment. Often, it is wives who feel unappreciated and overwhelmed with housework, although husbands sometimes experience this as well. Learning how to get along despite your differences is an important part of keeping your marriage healthy.

Examine Your Values

Have a discussion about your values. Often this is at the heart of many disagreements about chores. For example, do you believe housework should be shared equally? Or do you think a wife has more responsibility to do the household tasks?

Also, a couples’ work schedule sometimes plays a big role in determining household tasks based on their values. If one person works more than the other does that mean the person who works fewer hours has to do more chores? Does money play into it at all? Sometimes people think “he who earns the most should have to do the least chores.”

Do you have beliefs about who should be doing what chores? For example, should men do the yard work and women do the indoor chores? Although many people might think they don’t hold onto stereotypes of what men and women should be doing, it’s likely that most people do.

Once you have thought about your own values, take a look at your partner’s values. Are they different? All together about these differences and how this impacts your marriage.

Communicate About Priorities

Communicate to one another about what your priorities are when it comes to household chores. For example, is a manicured lawn more important than a clean kitchen? Do you want a clean bedroom more than you care about the dishes being done?

It’s likely that you have different priorities about what is most important. Discuss a plan to make sure that both of your top priorities are being tended to. A husband who comes home frustrated every day when the dishes aren’t done might be surprised to learn that his wife prefers to clean the bathroom and before doing the dishes. If they discuss this, they can develop a plan such as having him do the dishes since this isn’t his priority.

Problem-Solve

Work together on problem-solving. It’s likely that you both done place equal importance on household chores. So spend some time discussing how to resolve this.

If one of you prefers to do chores on the weekend and the other wants to relax, this can lead to anger and resentment from both sides. So discuss how to resolve this. It may take some alternative solutions, such as hiring a teenager to mow the lawn.

Taiwan's Amazingly Delicious Fruits
-Larry foreignersintaiwan

When I first came to Taiwan, I hated pineapple. Then I had Taiwan pineapple and it changed my world; it tasted like a pineapple starburst. I realized then that Taiwan fruit is sweet and amazing.

Starfruit 楊桃

Starfruit is cool because when you cut it into slices it has the shape of a star. That’s about the only good thing about it. I mean, it tastes like grass. People in Taiwan make smoothies with it, I assume those would be okay but I have never had one. Sorry starfruit fans.

Persimmon 柿子

This fruit looks like a tomato on the outside but inside is like an apple, though not quite as sweet. It’s not the most delicious fruit in Taiwan but it is unique.
Durian 榴槤

This spiky fruit can be stinky, disgusting, and frightful for most foreigners. However, my friends once gave it to me frozen and it tasted just like ice cream, so next time try it in frozen form. But beware as this fruit is super expensive.
 Guava 芭樂

Guava is wonderful. It comes in white and red flesh varieties, although the outside is always green. Inside is a very sweet dense flesh with tiny rock hard seeds. I think it is best to eat these dipped in sweet plum powder.

Pineapple鳳梨

Taiwan pineapple is as sweet as candy. I love to go buy a huge bag of chopped pineapple on the street and eat it as a snack. American pineapple on the other hand is almost always bland and sour, so I especially miss it whenever I am gone. Also, if you are interested in endless rolling hills filled with Pineapple fields, you should check out Dashu 大樹 in Kaohsiung.

Banana 香蕉

Some would say Ecuador is the banana capital of the world, and that is probably right, but Im sure Taiwan bananas are just as good. The most famous bananas are from 旗山 Qishan in Kaohsiung, and are some of the biggest bananas I have ever seen. One of the great things about living in Taiwan is you can buy fresh bananas on the street almost everywhere, so if you are a banana connoisseur like myself you will not have worry about bananas going bad (I eat bananas every single every day).
Banana prices in Taiwan (along with all fruits and vegetables) are affected by Typhoons.  At the beginning of 2017, bananas were selling at 4 times the normal price, a ten year high. Partly because of this and because I love bananas, I have planted 4 banana sprouts on my in-laws property. I should be able to harvest fruit in a year or two. Stay tuned for related blog posts.
