Samsung fined $340,000 for faking online comments

After being caught paying for false praise and negative comments about competitors, Samsung has been fined just over $340,000. The issue first arose internationally in April, when Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) announced it was opening an investigation into the allegations. That investigation found the allegations were true: the FTC says Samsung used a "large number of hired writers and designated employees" to post in Taiwanese forums. The commission does add that the company did this through a third-party marketing company, just as Samsung originally claimed. Two local marketing firms were fined a combined total of over $100,000 for their part in the marketing ploy.

When news first broke of Samsung's behavior, HTC was presented as the victim of a campaign of defamation from the Korean company's army of commenters, but the FTC's report into the matter doesn't mention the Taiwanese company by name. Instead, it only notes that the company paid people to "highlight the shortcomings of competing products." The commission did dig up a lot more nefarious activity related to Samsung's commenters, though. The list of infractions includes the "disinfection of negative news about Samsung products," "palindromic Samsung product marketing," and the positive evaluation of Samsung products.

 

Both individually and collectively, these types of covert marketing are known in the industry as "astroturfing." While Samsung is by no means the first company to engage in astroturfing, it's been caught in the act twice this year alone. In relation to a later case, Samsung told The Verge that it remains "committed to engaging in transparent and honest communications with consumers."

Cinemas unreasonably banning food: probe (Taipei Times By Mo Yan-chih )
 
 A recent inspection found that 17 of Taipei’s 34 cinemas imposed unreasonable bans on foods purchased outside the movie theaters, the city government said yesterday, urging the cinemas to relax the bans to avoid a fine of up to NT$1.5 million (US$50,000).

Regulations issued by the Executive Yuan’s Government Information Office (GIO) stated that cinemas should not ban food purchases from outside, with the exception of food considered a choking threat and food that is too spicy or pungent.

 

A recent inspection conducted by the city government’s Law and Regulation Commission found that the 17 cinemas, including major cinemas such as Ambassador Theaters and Vieshow Cinemas, had an overly long list of banned foods, and violated the regulations by exaggerating the definition of the ban. 
 

“The Ambassador Theater in the Breeze Center, for example, banned moviegoers from taking submarine sandwiches into the theater when it sells submarine sandwiches in the cinema. The ban is unreasonable and unfriendly to its customers,” Law and Regulation Commission director Yeh -Ching-yuan (葉慶元) said. 
 

In addition to unreasonably prohibiting moviegoers from eating hamburgers or French fries, or bringing soft drinks into movie theaters when it sells those items, the cinemas also abused the regulations by banning food such as potato chips and fruits, he said.

Of the 17 cinemas that imposed unreasonable bans on food items, Ambassador Theaters and Vieshow Cinemas had the longest lists of banned foods, prohibiting moviegoers from bringing in 37 and 43 kinds of food respectively.

  

The commission has issued notices to those cinemas and demanded they improve the situation within 15 days. Cinemas that fail to do so violate the Consumer Protection Law (消費者保護法) and face a fine of between NT$60,000 and NT$1.5 million, he added.

【生活中心╱台北報導】台北市知名的京華城喜滿客影城驚傳老鼠出沒咬人事件。有一名民眾在網路貼文表示自己上周五前往喜滿客看電影時，遭老鼠咬傷腳，雖漆黑影院中沒看見老鼠，但腳上留下咬痕，還為此就醫打狂犬病疫苗。此文引發網友熱烈討論。喜滿客影城回應，已協助民眾就醫，翌日也緊急請清潔公司消毒。

 民眾王先生在台大批踢踢網站（telnet://ptt.cc）貼文表示，他上周五晚上去京華城喜滿客影城看電影，看到一半感覺褲腳被拉扯，一度以為是身旁的女友碰他，手往下竟摸到毛茸茸的東西，之後感覺有東西快速跑過他的腳，感覺一陣刺痛，察看才發現有咬痕。

台北馬偕醫院院方表示，就醫屬患者隱私，不便透露細節。

衛生福利部疾病管制署副署長莊人祥表示，因台灣現有狂犬病疫情，且老鼠也會傳播漢他病毒，遭鼠咬抓傷民眾應盡速施打狂犬病及破傷風疫苗，以防感染。

Telepathy - The Ability To Read Someone's Mind

Telepathy is the ability to transfer thoughts or feelings from the mind of one individual to that of another (or between groups of people), without using the ordinary five senses. If you were telepathic, you would be able to read someone else's mind. Telepathy serves as a means of communication when information is prevented from other methods of travel due to physical obstacles, distance, or time.

 

Telepathy was formerly termed, "thought-transference," until Frederick W. H. Myers renamed it in 1882. Genuine telepathy differs from acts of mentalism in that no trick or illusion is necessary to produce results. However, skeptics are still doubtful of the existence of genuine telepathic abilities, especially given that no experiment has produced continually verifiable results time after time.

Various testing methods have been implemented to check for telepathic abilities in individuals. Among them are the Zener card test and the Ganzfeld experiment. Zener cards have special symbols on them, and while one subject looks at a card, the other tries to telepathically receive the symbol, which is unknown to them. The Ganzfeld experiment requires someone receiving information to maintain total sensory deprivation, while the other transmits from a separate location.

Two specific classes of telepathy focus on the amount of time between the information's point of origin and its receipt by a telepath. Latent telepathy, formerly "deferred telepathy," entails a delay between the points at which information is sent and received. Precognitive telepathy, on the other hand, covers cases in which the telepath receives information from the sender's future mind. Essentially, a precognitive telepath would know what you were going to think before you thought it.

One form of telepathy that is actively being "created" is cyber-telepathy, which has come to be called "techlepathy." Techlepathy is telepathy brought about through technological means, in which humans can connect to computers and to each other. Some people truly believe that humanity will someday be connected in just such a way.

Food safety problems worry 80% of Taiwan's public: poll (CNA)

Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) Eighty percent of Taiwan's public are concerned about food safety problems, according to the results of a recent survey released Tuesday.

The results show that 80 percent of the respondents said they worry that food products might contain harmful ingredients, 79 percent expressed worry that the contents of products are different to what is listed on the labels, and 78 percent worry that food products they purchased might have gone bad.

Taiwanese rock band Mayday is raising its international profile ahead of an upcoming world tour. The band spoke to the BBC about its hope to become The Beatles of the Chinese-speaking world.
