Taiwan on alert over alleged IS threat to
attack Taipei 101 (CNA)
Taipei, Feb. 26 (CNA) Taiwan is on alert
after a Twitter post of a photo showing Taipei 101, a landmark building in the
capital city, on fire in the wake of a terrorist attack, but the authorities
urged the public not to panic, saying that the government was trying to verify
the authenticity of the post.
Premier Mao Chih-kuo (毛治國) said at a news conference Thursday that the government has a
response mechanism in place and will continue to investigate the matter.
At a separate press event, Ministry of
National Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Luo Shou-he (羅紹和) said that the military has been looking into the background of the
photo and the motives for posting it.
The military's anti-terrorism units will be
deployed to safeguard the country in the event of a real situation, he added.
Meanwhile, when asked about the issue,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Anna Kao (高安) said that "Taiwan's representative offices in relevant
countries will continue to keep close tabs on related developments."
The ministry has also asked the country's
representative offices overseas to stay on high alert, she said, adding that it
will update travel alerts in line with developments in other countries.
Meanwhile, Taipei police said that more
police officers will be deployed to step up patrols surrounding the 509-meter
Taipei 101 building.
The #FreeShamiWitness@KhilafahTimes post of
Feb. 24 came with a threat that read: "When Islamic State attacks your
cities it won't look nice. By the permission of Allah that day is not
far."
Cabinet spokesman Sun Lih-chyun (孫立群) said Wednesday that the structure in the photo looks like the
Taipei 101 building, but the background does not seem like the Taipei Basin,
citing initial information. He stressed that the government is taking the issue
seriously and that the photo is undergoing further scrutiny.

Lying to friends and family members may
seem like a quick way to lose their trust, but new research suggests this may
not always be the case. Lying for the right reasons, researchers found, can
actually strengthen some social bonds.
But what exactly are the "right"
reasons for lying? That depends on the situation, said Robin Dunbar, an
evolutionary psychologist at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Lying to
cover up a misdeed or just to get your way isn't likely to improve your
relationships, Dunbar said. This type of deception, known as antisocial lying,
is destructive and weakens the bonds between two people.
On the other hand, lies told to help
another person or to protect someone's feelings tend to be good for
relationships, Dunbar said. Psychologists call this pro-social lying, but it's
more commonly known as telling a white lie or a fib.
