India's Supreme Court has said that a 59-year-old union ban on female make-up artists in the country's film industry is illegal and must be lifted.

Two judges said the gender discrimination was unconstitutional. A powerful trade union has long argued that men needed the jobs.

Women may work as hair-stylists on film sets but any who have tried to do make-up were threatened or even assaulted.

India has one of the world's biggest movie and TV entertainment industries.

Nine women petitioned the Supreme Court in January 2013. On Monday, judges said the film set ban was "constitutionally impermissible discrimination".

"How can this discrimination continue? We will not permit this. It cannot be allowed under our constitution. Why should only a male artist be allowed to put make-up?" Justices Dipak Misra and UU Lalit were quoted as saying in the Indian Express newspaper.

"We don't see a reason to prohibit a woman from becoming a make-up artist if she is qualified."

Even top directors and actors couldn't break the rule that women couldn't be make-up artists. One actress I spoke to said it wasn't comfortable for women to get their body make-up done by men, but they really had no choice.

Producers who defied this rule had to pay hefty fines and artists were denied credits on the film titles. Women make-up artists were sometimes brought on the sets surreptitiously, hidden in mobile beauty salons known as vanity vans for fear that if the trade unions got wind of it the production would be brought to a halt.

The livelihoods of thousands of women make-up artists have been affected. Instead of doing the work of their choice, they've been restricted mainly to weddings and fashion shows - but Bollywood is the bigger business to be in and the Supreme Court's move should finally end this gender bias.

Socially intelligent leaders know how to read the body language and emotions of their people. They are highly aware of social environments and highly attuned to the language used by people. They are curious about people and are great observes of human behavior.

The following steps can help you improve your ability to observe and read people and situations. Practice at least one over the next seven days, and notice any changes in the way you perceive and experience others. You will likely be more present, and your experiences will become richer.

1. Start using your senses instead of going through the day on autopilot. Sit in an airport, a restaurant or a mall and watch people. Try to figure out their relationships in couples or groups. Notice their moods, clothing and the ways they position themselves with others.

2. Observe the spaces in which you find yourself. Who sits where in meetings? How are offices or work spaces laid out? How does this communicate status or authority?

3. Listen for the various ways people use language to signal their social status and authority. How do people use slang, figures of speech, specialized vocabularies and clichés?

4. Observe the nonverbal signals people use to define and reinforce their relationships. How does the boss convey approachability? How do others do this?

The more you consciously use your senses and observe people, the more situational awareness you will gain. After a while, you’ll pick up on things you never before noticed. You’ll begin to incorporate new sensitivity into your communications and most certainly raise your level of executive presence.

印度最高法院今天裁決，禁止女性化妝師在電影業工作違反憲法，下令這個歧視女性的禁令立即廢除。

BBC報導，過去59年來，印度電影圈都禁止女性擔任化妝師，女性只能擔任髮型師。印度工會團體一直抵制女性在電影擔任化妝師工作，說她們將影響男性的生計。印度最高法院裁決表示，這一做法違憲，是不能允許的歧視。

印度的影視產業規模可說是世界第一，但即使再大牌導演和演員以前也不能破壞禁用女化妝師的規定。雖然有些女演員對男化妝師化妝感到不自在，但也莫可奈何。而某些嘗試在電影圈工作的女化妝師，遭到威脅甚至毒打。

數以千計的女化妝師無法進入寶萊塢工作，只能在婚禮、時裝表演討生活。

2013年1月，九名婦女表示她們遭到寶萊塢一個很有勢力的工會禁止擔任化妝師工作，要最高法院裁決。向法院申請裁定的九名女性之一，查努·庫拉娜說，她在美國加州一所化妝學校學成後卻不准在寶萊塢工作。有些嘗試在電影行業工作的女化妝師曾遭到威脅甚至毒打。

印度最高法院下令，這一歧視女性的禁令立即廢除。法官指出，我們生活在2014年，而不是1935年。
