Impacts of Reality TV on Society  By Anonymous, Denver

Everyday, millions of people tune in to watch their favorite reality TV show. As a result, your everyday person becomes a replica of Kim Kardashian and your son suddenly begins to feel the need to be an Italian “Guido.” The purpose of this essay is to show the positive and negative effects of reality TV on society.

Reality TV has affected our society in several negative ways. To begin with, people imitate famous TV stars. For example, ever since the Kardashian- Jenner family became known to the world, many teens started becoming Kardashian- clones, which basically includes your average teen mixed with some attitude, more sex appeal, and a tendency to want expensive, material things. Because of this cloning, there is no longer a lot of individuality. Moreover, shows that were made to entertain us actually create stereotypes and assumptions about different groups. The MTV show Teen Mom, for instance, has given many people the thought that teens nowadays are stupid and irresponsible. Similarly, Jersey Shore, another MTV favorite, has made a reputation for New Jersey, which is that Jersey is full of crazy partiers who drink all the time. Even though these shows are on the “favorites- list” of many people, they are putting a lot of negativity on the shoulders of the world.

Reality TV may have its downs, but there is certainly a plus side. Through the Kardashian family, many charities and organizations are advertised. As a result, more people have begun making donations for those in need. Adding on, some reality TV shows raise awareness on certain things, such as online- dating. The newest MTV series Catfish, for example, conveys the journeys that average people take on when trying to meet their online- love in person. A lot of the time, the person on the other side of the screen is not who everyone expected. These types of shows draw attention to the dangers of talking to people you do not know, which can save many people from a broken heart, and the confusion that online- dating causes. Similarly, Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant show teenagers that having children at young ages is not a smart idea, considering the fact that you are put through so much at such an early time in your life; consequently, copious teens have realized that getting pregnant at a young age is “not cool.” Reality TV may be messing up society, but it makes up for that by helping it thrive to being better and stronger.

Travel and Tourism in Taiwan (euromonitor.com)

Change in China’s tourism law temporarily affects tourism flows inbound

In the fourth quarter of 2013, the flow of arrivals was significantly affected by a change in China’s tourism law, as China is the largest source market for Taiwan. China’s new legislation was implemented to regulate fairer trade between travel agencies and tourists. The new law prohibits travel agencies from offering low-priced tours and then marking-up their profit margins by obtaining commissions from shops to which they bring their tour groups or requiring additional payment for services. However, this was perceived as a good temporary situation as the quality of tours from mainland China to Taiwan is expected to improve over time, benefiting travel operators in general.

Changing consumer lifestyles boost travel and tourism

Long working hours and stressful work environments led young consumers in Taiwan to increasingly seek escape through travelling. To them, travelling is perceived as a necessity rather than luxury. The growing number of retirees in Taiwan also engendered a change in values as they are more financially stable and able to engage in more leisure travel, previously a privilege that was only limited to the affluent. The increased frequency of outbound travel was fuelled by lower travel costs, made possible by the presence of low cost carriers and online travel retailers.

Luxury travel develops due to changing values of affluent travellers

Luxury travel has benefited from changes in the values of young consumers with high disposable incomes. More and more young professionals are taking short weekend getaways in mountain regions or coastal areas such as Yilan and Hualien. They like to stay in luxury travel accommodation as a way of rewarding themselves for working hard during the week. High-end spas are gaining attention from affluent local consumers and high spenders from mainland China and Japan, the top two source markets for arrivals in Taiwan.

Growing use of social media by travel and tourism players
Taiwanese people are highly active on social media and the success of Australia’s tourism campaign in Taiwan using micro-blogs and other social media tools is a testament to how exposure can be created through social networks. Additionally, consumers look for information on the internet and share photos and discuss their travel experiences with friends, family and colleagues on social networks. Travel bloggers also have an influence on the promotion of travel products and destinations through attractive photos and reviews.
